rattle a creek. favorit

Featured Replies

hey dudes

it has been like it for a while and now is starting to irritate me, i have what is belived to be a ratting timing chain, is there a tensioner that can be adjsuted or replace?? any ideas on how much a replacement would cost?

also i have creeking steering/ suspension, when turning the wheels both was there is a creeking from passengers side, this noise is also on bumps but on on warm days or after a long time of driving any ideas?

cheers

No tensioner. It's a common problem on these cars, the chains stretch and rattle. If the noise doesn't irritate you too much you could leave it. I was quoted £199.95 by a main Skoda dealer to do the job, and £160 by an independent garage that used to be a Skoda dealer. I tried asking another place but they said they don't do timing chains so couldn't give me a quote.

The chain itself is available for £15 off a shop called Jorily skoda on ebay. Would also need a timing cover and sump gasket. I think Jorily Skoda now sells a complete set of all the parts you need. If you don't feel up to the job yourself it may save money to ask for quotes for labour only and supply the parts yourself. However, the guy responsible for Jorily Skoda hasn't replied to my last 2 e-mail queries given plenty of time, not sure why. A Skoda dealer may also have all the required parts at reasonable prices.

As for the other noise, I cannot offer any definite information but I would check for rust in any of the suspension cups, and around the bolts. Also see http://www.briskoda.net/forums/felicia-fun-forman/skoda-felicia-damper-failure/77263/ Other possibility includes suspect CV joint.

creek may be dry bushes on the wishbones, or on the suspention units!

mine did it when i got it, i sprayed all the front end bushes with WD40, and it got a lot better, but it did where off quick!

I have the same problem for the suspension, when steering reaches it max left or right you hear the rubber creek noise, I am currently on the job,I have replaced the bearings, the inserts and rubbers but it did not fix the problem, the strut piston is firm and tight, so I`m guessing it`s the suspension coils, they have been on the car for 16 years so they are obviously saggy now,my theory is that they are not applying enough pressure to the rubbers to keep them in place.

A creaking on my steering was cured by changing the steering rack, although I suspect it was just worn track rod ends making the noise.

Dude I`d think if the noise was coming from the steering rack or track rod ends i`d notice.

not had any e-mails from you Alan although I have had the same problem with a couple of other customers.

I didn't really investigate as I knew they needed changing anyway (MOT advisory). But you're right, should be quick and easy to eliminate. Just saying it cured a noise in my case :)

Hey Graham, don't worry this is an old revived post! Check out the date on the earlier posts, october 2007 :) I guess it's possible you have some sort of aggressive junk mail filter or your email provider isn't very good?

I`m not right, You were right to state your opinion, skodarew did not point out where the sound was coming from,

"when turning the wheels both was there is a creeking from passengers side"

What the hell language is that?

I`m sorry :sorry:

For those of you attempting to have a go at these yourself and having the same problem as me,be sure to compress the springs well enough to get the bearing, rubber plate assembly sitting on the piston in order to fully tighten the nut,it sorted out the problem, but i`m still not satisfied when turning the steering to the left, the c.v joint is making a crunch noise when its in a certain position, its a very lite noise but I have one spare so i`ll change that tomorrow.

O.k,the c.v joint is replaced ,turns out, there is another noise and it is coming from the steering rack, but i`m leaving that for now cause I was desperate to take it for a spin today, I must say I was pretty happy with the job,I still need to align the wheels, but first things first I need to check out the rack,I hope it is something small and not were and tear,if not i`ll just have to fork out the dosh,I don`t get it the steering rack was replaced 3 years ago is this normal?

Woah old post, sorry for the poor writing i hadnt checked what id written before i had submited the post.

regarding the creek, it was the wishbone ball joint. The rubber had split slightly and the grease had been contaminated and dryed up. i pumped a big dollop of grease in there and all was well for many many miles. i think new ball joints are about £7 from jorily IIRC.:headbang:
