Went this morning to get my bits he should of sprayed and had not started them :finger::finger: :thumbdwn: He has only had them 2 weeks.

So down to halfords to pick up some cans.

Managed to get everything sprayed today with the help of my trusty garage heater.

Got some bits of dust in one or 2 pieces but thats expected when sawing up kitchen units in there as well

Put all my bits on just and will get picks tomorrow when silicone has dried and tape removed. Colour match looks good though but it was dark.

Hopefully pictures will work now

WOW love that rear end!

The front don't half look bad either ;)

Hope to see it on Sunday!

Lookin shiny!

(need convincing about the eyebrows tho...)

love your car monkeyboy...... as i said in the pm similar styling to what i have plans on doing...

Joel

Not keen on the debadged grille, but the exhaust looks incredibly cool.

Was not sure about the eyebrows myself as i only put the grille on first and looked ok but the headlights seam a bit big. Eyebrows make the car look meaner from a distance.

You will get to see it on Sunday Si & Dave car is dirty in pic as covered in saw dust.

How many coats of paint did you put on that grill - it looks really good from the pics!

Can't get mine to look that good - originally wet-n-dried it, base coat/primer stuff, about 6 coats of black magic (from Halfords) then several coats of lacquer on top.

I wonder if you've put too many coats on or, it's not had enough time to dry between coats.

Paul,

rear bump and exhaust look good!

Not sure about the eye brows myself...grill looks good but needs something to finish it off.

IMHO. ;)

Dave i did 2 coats of black then 2 coats of lacquer and left it a hour of so by the heater then sanded with fine wet and dry. Put on 2 more coats then smoothed then 2 more coats. Left for 2 hours by heater then used cutting compound to remove the slight orange peal effect. Fitted and polished a couple of times.

I no what you mean Adrian but the pics dont do it justice but still have plenty of ideas to keep me good for a while.

Like the rear, and I'll reserve judgement for the front until I've seen it on Sunday ;)

car looks great!

the rear of the car looks stunning mate! i like the rear spliter type thing. seems to finish off the bumper well!

im now very tempted to get one

where did you get the debadged grille from monkey boy, looks good, does it replace the whole grille section?

  • Author

Got all the bits from Milotec.

It is a direct replacement for the whole standard grille. One of those things you either love it or hate it. Looks better when i cleaned and waxed the slam panel as it shows through the grille.

Got mixed reactions at the FJ mega meet.

Have to say it looks better in the flesh than on the pictures, but I still like the grille as it is with the chrome surrounding. Each their own !

looks funky to me mate, shame i couldnt make the meet on sunday :( no doubt i'll be seeing it soon though.

  • 2 weeks later...

monkey boy, have you got any tips for painting the diffuser etc? ive just bought the rear diffuser and was wondering how to get the best finish, is it a special kind of primer for plastics? i was reading what you were saying above but just incase you had any other advice on how many coats of paint and lacquer.

oh one last point how easy was it to position the deffuser on the bumper, easy to work with?

cheers

I would sand the diffuser down a bit with rough sanpaper so the paint will key to it. I use plastic primer Holts if you can find any (laquer to be holts as well). Use a couple of light coats of primer and leave to dry then sand with 1200 wet and dry. Repeat until it is smooth and has totaly covered. If you can leave it in the sun of by a heater for a while before putting and colour onto it itseams to give a better finish. Do the same again with the colour until you are happy with the finish.

Before putting any laquer on make sure the paint has had time to cure as the laquer can go milky. Put the laquer on in thicker coats and put on 4-5 coats.

You can then use cutting compound to remove the orange peal effect. Alternatively you can sand it down lightly then use the cutting compound.

Best thing to do is take your time at the end of the day you can sand it down and do it again.

Diffuser is easyer on yours as you have the exhaust hole to make sure it is in the correct position. I find it much easyer if you put a couple of strips of double sided tape on the bottom (the part that goes under the bumper) to hold it in place while the silicone goes off there is not much to tape it to.

Hope this helps

Works the same on interiors as well. Bit of silver and black job done.

Sure Nigel will remember this photo from French Car show after it was like this when we got there
