Best lubricant for lock mechanisms?

Featured Replies

today i found out i had central locking (woohoo! up down up down see them all go!) and then found out why i didn't know (it stuck and blew its fuse again after one trip).

The rear passenger door wouldn't lock, took a bit of a push get the lock down, so I assume that's what did the fuse in (15amps yikes, must be using a fair bit of grunt!).

so everyone's experience seems to be "take the door cards off and lube the locks!"

my question is, "what with?"

and also "where can in get those little fuses?"

and also "isn't it weird that it worked ok in the afternoon and then after one single car trip it died again?"

cheers

halfords etc sell the mini blade fuses.

Is is the lock itself you are trying to lube or the barrel? If it's the lock itself I'd probably use degreaser on it and then apply fresh grease.

I would imagine it's the door lock mechanism (there's no barrel on the rear doors) I suppose it would need the parts inside the door lubricating and the external parts..

Best lubricant for lock mechanisms?

WD40 should loosen everything up

2nd on the WD40 , sorted my sticky CL-ing

WD40 short term - a graphite based lubricant in the long term, always.

Halfords did sell them years ago (still have mine).

Haynes recommends white lithium grease for long-term use.

I presume it's the mechanicals. Strip the door cards, clean, and lubricate with a light graphite grease.

The barrels should ideally be lubricated with powdered graphite.

thanks everyone - i covered the inner mechanicals with wd40 and it worked for the last few days fine... it was the white lithium/ graphite grease that i was trying to remember though! ah well, next time it gives any probs i'll use that instead for a long term solution.

Cheers
