  1. MPs will forgive Johnson anything he has ever done wrong, or will do wrong, if they think he can win them the next general election. All he has to do is stand there waffling like a third rate Churchill and tory voters go weak at the knees. If one has 'resigned' the office of PM (de facto sacked by your party really), one should be prevented from being reconsidered for the position until the next parliament at the earliest, possibly even banned forever depending on the circumstances of the resignation/sacking. Of course the above is true for any political party. I wish I had put some money on Johnson yesterday when he was at 27/1.
  2. Bet365 odds on Johnson being the next PM are around 2/1. It's clear now that Truss was just put in office to prepare the way for his return....
  3. The fire/damage caused looks to be as result of actions to capture the facility rather than any attempt to destroy it. In The Guardian, Dr Mark Wenman, reader in Nuclear Materials at Imperial College London, is quoted as saying: 'The Zaporizhzia nuclear plant has six VVER-1000 pressurised water reactor units producing 20% of Ukraine’s electricity. The plant is a relatively modern reactor design and as such the essential reactor components are housed inside a heavily steel reinforced concrete containment building that can withstand extreme external events, both natural and man-made, such as an aircraft crash or explosions. The reactor core is itself further housed in a sealed steel pressure vessel with 20cm thick walls. The design is a lot different to the Chernobyl reactor, which did not have a containment building, and hence there is no real risk, in my opinion, at the plant now the reactors have been safely shut down.'
  4. Perhaps your ASHP is just undersized for the task at hand. If heat loss>heat supplied no form of heating will work properly. The first step is to make sure heat loss calculations have been carried out as accurately as possible. There's a lot of info on here: https://forum.buildhub.org.uk/topic/439-fabric-and-ventilation-heat-loss-calculator/
  5. Changes to the Highway Code will come into force on 29th January. A summary of the changes can be found here: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1037306/table-of-change-to-the-highway-code.pdf Most notable are the new rules H1 to H3 under the 'Hierarchy of Road Users' heading (or common sense as I like to think of it). Who on here is aware of the changes?
  6. I'm extremely surprised to learn that Attorneys General are not required to have had an extensive legal career at the bar. (the legal bar not the Nag's Head).
  7. The problem with people replacing ICE vehicles with EVs is that they think they're saving the planet when they aren't. Everything that's made has some CO2 or other environmental costs associated. I don't think anyone that owns a newish, fairly fuel efficient, normal car should be getting rid of it for an EV. Simply look at using your normal car less - if Covid has taught us anything it's that we don't need to be driving around as much as we think we do.
  8. This was a hard pick, so I went for variety! Guns 'n' Roses, Appetite for Destruction Pink Floyd, The Wall Stevie Wonder, Songs in the Key of Life Eagles, Eagles RATM, Rage Against the Machine
  9. But not unprecedented in other countries in recent times, I'm thinking SARS and MERS. Additionally, I believe the UK Govt carried out some pandemic preparedness exercises, based on an outbreak of an avian influenza variant, which they presumably learned some things from. Even more damning is the fact that they could see the approach of the virus via other countries, and still very little was done initially. So whilst the Govt cannot be expected to have forseen every nuance of the pandemic, they cannot claim complete ignorance about what they should have done and how things would pan out. That is unforgivable. So, yes, the early response to the virus was a horrendous public health failure resulting in many deaths.
  10. What does anyone think of the proposed changes to the highway code and has anyone filled in the online consultation? On the whole I think the changes are good. Some of the wording could be better. https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/review-of-the-highway-code-to-improve-road-safety-for-cyclists-pedestrians-and-horse-riders Consultation description Consultation seeking views on proposed changes to The Highway Code to improve safety for vulnerable road users, particularly the groups of: cyclists pedestrians horse riders The main alterations to the code being proposed are: introducing a hierarchy of road users which ensures that those road users who can do the greatest harm have the greatest responsibility to reduce the danger or threat they may pose to others clarifying existing rules on pedestrian priority on pavements, to advise that drivers and riders should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross the road, providing guidance on cyclist priority at junctions to advise drivers to give priority to cyclists at junctions when travelling straight ahead establishing guidance on safe passing distances and speeds when overtaking cyclists and horse riders
  11. They should all get a full life term with no parole. Unfortunately they won't. One of them pleaded guilty to manslaughter at an earlier hearing so he'll get between 2 and 5 years I reckon. The others, probably 10.
  12. A slightly more in-depth report on what Jasmine Archer-Jones posted can be found on the Evening Standard website, here: https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/jasmine-archer-jones-miss-swimsuit-uk-stripped-title-a4501236.html I think the point people miss is that it's not BLM vs ALM, agreeing with BLM does not diminish or deny the fact that ALM. BLM recognises that people of colour have faced and continue to face awful prejudice in their lives just because of the colour of their skin.
