  1. My iPhone will charge but Smartlink no longer works through the USB port. My Android phone doesn't connect either so I'm suspecting a faulty socket. It was all working fine a week ago and just stopped overnight. So not helpful for your predicament but just wondering whether you'd made any progress.
  2. So I've just come back from a little run and checked the level. Dipstick was dirty when I first took it out. Cleaned it and put it back in and it then it came out clean and showing a good unambiguous reading. I'm a happy bunny in time for xmas. And more importantly, no puppies have died this week ;-)
  3. Cheers for the replies. Some very useful info. I'll start checking after long journeys and keep an eye on the levels.
  4. Hi, probably a silly question but checking the oil levels in my VRS is driving me nuts. It seems to go through periods of burning oil for no apparent reason and then doesn't use any at all so I'm keeping an eye on the levels but I'm having trouble reading and believing the dipstick. Last week the low oil alert came on (surprised as was fine a month or so ago, but it was a very cold morning and random oil usage seems to be a "feature") so I topped up to about mid range on the dipstick. So far, so good and the reading appeared to be reliable as I put oil in and took the reading. This morning (car cold, not used) I checking the levels and one side of the dipstick is oily from about half way down the stick and further down the oil level was above the max mark although it wasn't solid, so I wasn't really sure what conclusion to draw. I drained a bit out to bring the level down but still couldn't seem to get a reilable reading so took the car for a 5 minute drive wondering if that would suck some of the oil down the dipstick tube and make it easier to get a sump reading. It kind of worked and the reading looks about right, but the dipstick is dirty and I'm still not convinced and am paranoid about too much or too little oil. With the Christmas driving visiting people imminent I'm a bit concerned. I never had this grief with my old Golf, so am wondering what best practice is for taking a reading (car totally cold, or cooled down after a run), and whether there are any tips for reading the dipstick reliably. Searching the forum it looks like this has come up before but I'm still not clear what I'm doing wrong. And I don't understand how last week the level looked fine, but today it has gone up (!) with the engine cold. Thanks in advance, Richard
  5. I've had this once on my 12 plate vRS. It was really heavy rain in the motorway and I was getting a couple of drops coming through every minute. Will mention it to the dealers next time I take the car in and see what they say. Sent from my C6603 using Tapatalk 2
  6. Yay! Must have been a piece of grit. I did a bit of reversing and then forwards and then a long reverse and I heard a worse noise and then it must have popped out as the noise stopped. Happy days. Cheers all. A pint of homebrew to celebrate I think. Sent from my C6603 using Tapatalk 2
  7. Hello, my vRS has just started making a horrible scraping/squealing sound from the drivers side rear wheel. It happens when the wheel is just rotated, nothing to do with whether the brakes are applied or not. I've jacked it up and turned it by hand and I think it is coming from the brake. With less than 9k on the clock I can't believe the pads are worn out (they look quite thick to me, but my knowledge only comes from watching too much Wheeler Dealers so I am a bit of an amateur ), so what are the likely culprits? Grit between the pad and the disc, or something more sinister? I read somewhere about a sticking handbrake but the other rear side is fine. My dealer can't fit us in until Monday so should I take my life in my hands and take it down Kwik Fit to eyeball it? Or wait for the expert opinion? It is still under warranty but no doubt they'll play the wear and tear card. Any thoughts appreciated. Many Thanks, Richard
  8. I Revo'd my old Mk4 Gti Golf and loved it - more power and much smoother. I'm sure I got better fuel economy also. The only downside was insurance aggro as standard insurers don't like remaps so I couldn't use any major insurers or price comparison web sites which meant every year I had to do some phoning round to get the best renewal price. If it wasn't for the insurance issue I'd get my VRs remapped without a second thought.
  9. I came from a mk4 golf gti manual to an Octavia vrs with dsg and I love it. Auto D is great for pootling but if you want the manual experience you have paddles or stick. Properly tried S this week and it was the business. Like driving with paddles but without the hassle :-) I was doubtful about autos but now I'm never going back to a manual. 10. Cheers guys - only a few days to go. Then plenty more questions no doubt
  11. Hi all, I'm picking up my ex demo Octavia VRS at the weekend. Was originally going for a Laurin and Klement but took a VRS out for a test and it blew me away. I have a - hopefully daft - question though, if anyone can help. I'm wondering where the 12V socket is as I'll need to connect my TomTom? Do I need to get a extra long power cable in preparation? (As far as I know my new motor hasn't got the smokers pack installed if that makes any difference). Thanks..
