  1. I think you'll find that the reason the AC kicks in when you use the screen clearing setting is that one of the things AC does is dry the air as well as chilling it (when below a certain temperature). Dry air is much much more effective at clearing condensation off the screen than blowing "ordinary" air at it.
  2. So it's like VW's Bluemotion (the real deal ie, skimmed milk)and Bluemotion Technology (the halfway house, semi-skimmed) then.
  3. It's just that the judder thing seems instinctively to be more of a clutch/flywheel thing rather than a gearbox selector problem but I'm not a mechanic. Once had to have the clutch replaced on a brand new MX5 as that had judder setting off, caused by oil contamination on the clutch disc according to the tech who did the job. Weird that yours only does it in reverse though.
  4. Possibly an iffy dual mass flywheel issue?
  5. Just been on the skoda.co.uk website and it lists the kerbweight of a Yeti 170 as 1535kg which makes it an 89% match for our caravan. This is good as its better than our current car (which I'll fess up has towed quite securely at 91% for years before anybody starts with the 85% thing). However, the brochure which I downloaded off the same site shows the kerbweight as 1460kg which is not so good, putting us at 94% and that is probably a bit too near the knuckle for me to be happy with. Can anybody please confirm which is correct? Also, does anybody have a pic of the vario floor in place? Does it raise the floor enough to eradicate the load lip such that if I put a dog crate on it I can open the crate door which is 2 inches above the floor of the crate? Finally, could one of you good folks confirm the width of the boot between the arches ie, at its narrowest point, and the length from the tailgate to the rear seat backrest when the seats are slid as far forward as possible (but not with the backrests folded down). All I've been able to glean off the web is that the boot holds 416 litres which is sort of useful but at the same time not.
  6. Hi, before you dismiss the 140 check out it's torque figure of 320Nm against the 170, it's only a 30Nm drop and speaking as a seasoned caravanner with a heavy single axle van I doubt you'd notice it. It's torque you'll need to get your rig moving not outright power (and a 140 will sustain 60mph all day long). Plus the tax on the 140 is less and in 3 years by which time the government will be crucifying anything that emits more than a squeak of CO2 you may regret not getting the smallest engine that will do the job. Remember the 4x4 system on the Superb is only part time and won't kick in properly until you induce some slip at the front end. I too always thought 4WD was a must until I was in a boggy field in Devon with a FWD Audi A6 2.0 8v petrol estate and a 1.5tonne van. I had to pull it uphill onto a track and was convinced we'd need a tractor to help. However, it was absolutely no problem at all and front that moment on I decided 4WD wasn't for me.

  9. The current Passat isn't North/South anymore is it? Thought it went over to an East/West installation at the last big model change in 2005/6 so I agree it's probably more likely VW don't want Skoda trampling on any(more) sales with a direct competitor.
  10. I had the "hissing" sound on both my Peugeots and my mobile aircon guy told me the noise is the system cavitating what gas remains in it, although if there is a leak eventually it will shut down the compressor when the system loses pressure. It's difficult to identify where the leak is coming from, it literally could be from anywhere. One of mine was a blown seam on the condensor (radiator thingy) which was a simple manufacturing defect as it was only 8 months old and we'd never seen this before.
  11. Glasses Guide puts your vRS at around the £4k mark with 80k on it's back I'm afraid. Personally I agree with where you're coming from, you are in a spot. 80k is about where many people (incorrectly) start thinking cars - particularly smaller ones - are getting to "worn-out" territory so they devalue them in their heads before giving them a fair chance. A trader acquaintance of mine tells me he won't touch anything smaller than a Mondeo with 80k+ on the clock as it's too hard to sell on for a good return. So you need to decide whether to twist (and sell) or stick (and fix the brakes). I'd stick, if the car is good and owes you very little then as the economy clamps down you may be pleased you didn't blow cash on a depreciating asset (which is all a car is). Then again, if that little whisper inside is saying "you want a change" you may be the sort of person who needs to listen to it before it turns into a shout and drives you bonkers Why not get the missus a new car, lets face it a Mk2 Fabia is an ugly so and so after all.
  12. Hmmm, don't think they'll have bought it in for quite as low as £4000, and it is a good mileage so I reckon £6500 would be a realistic price, it's still more than book but at the end of the day a car is worth what someone will pay. There is one at Autosales Suzuki in Bilton, Staffs with 43k miles and its 1 owner too, up for £7495 so thats £500 less and one less owner straightaway. Please don't buy it, I may go and look at it tomorrow and its a 140 round trip for me.
  13. May be wrong but if the car is an Elegance won't it have heated seats? I think he just wants to know how to transfer the heater elements from his old seats into a set of standard vRS chairs. But then again I could be wrong
  14. I have to deal with this everyday so have this one on me. 1. Notwithstanding all that has been said the Police's resources are now spread so thin they will take no interest in this as no one has been injured, yes they should but they won't - that is real life for you. 2. It is not worth claiming on your own policy, the repair costs only have to exceed roughly 60% of the cars value and it'll get written off and after deducting your excess you will get very little although if you pursue your case you may well recover the excess from the offending driver's Insurers but it may be a long job and I'm sure the car is worth more to you than it's pure monetary value. 3. You have the registration number of the offending car. Therefore you can try and ask the Police for details of the Insurers, if its Insured it will be on the Motor Insurance Database which is accessible by the Police and Insurance companies. They may refuse to give it you but its worth a go. If you can get details of her Insurers you can simply ring them up and tell them your tale and emphasise you have a witness, they will take you seriously and will then try to contact her. Even if she denies knowledge to her Insurers they should tell her "sorry, but he (you) has an independent witness so we'll have to settle" so your witness is priceless, do not loose their details. 4. Failing that if you have legal expenses (often called Uninsured Loss Recovery) cover on your own Insurance policy then get them involved and tell them you want to pursue the cost of damages in full as an uninsured loss claim rather than just your policy excess (which is normally all they do). However, you may have to notify your own insurers of the incident (note I say incident here not claim) in order to get them to activate the legal cover. Patiently explain to your own insurers that your car was parked unattended and you do NOT wish to claim for your own damage on your own policy, they SHOULD set up the case, activate the legal referral and close their file straightaway but some can be a bit funny about it. It won't then affect your NCB but as has been posted you will have an accident noted although non-fault claims should not affect the rating of your premium and in any event strictly speaking whether you claim or not you SHOULD disclose the incident at your next renewal anyway (but in reality most people don't bother as if its not gone "through the books" then who's to know). If you took your Insurance out through a decent broker have you spoken to them about your options (the fact you've posted on a forum makes me think you went the direct option and are a bit lost where to go for advice)? 5. Go to a decent bodyshop for a quote and most of them have referral schemes to accident management companies who are frankly vultures but in your circumstance they have their place. A decent one will do a risk assessment to check the chances of making a recovery and won't take you on if they think its a no-hoper. If they do they'll either do a credit repair on the car or write it off and stick you in a hire car at no cost to you BUT read the small print as some of the less scrupulous ones will take you on regardless then if it turns to poo they'll ask you for all the money they've "paid" out to do your repairs and the cost of hiring you a car. This option is not to be undertaken lightly. 5. Final option and the toughest one, just chalk it up to a life experience, drive round with a dented car and move on. I appreciate this is not the most palatable choice but sometimes it just ain't worth it.
  15. I'd be interested to know that 'cos I'm a nosey bugger.
  16. Dunno, I'm not a trader but I got a few free shots at Glass' online via a mate of a mate. Even so, it's a heck of a variance in prices. The prices I've seen quoted in this thread (circa £5000) seem a lot more realistic than franchised Skoda dealers are asking (for what are after all "old" cars in their - dealers - terms). I mean Fabias on 05/55 plates are probably cycling through for the last time ie, if you buy then trade it in after a year or two they'll have absolutely no interest in it because it'll be too old for them to stock so you'd get bottom dollar for it as it's essentially auction fodder.
  17. Depends on which side of the fence you sit I guess. I'm currently looking for a bog-stock unmapped historied vRS with under 60k miles on it and heated seats (got back problems and they really help). Can I find one for anywhere near book (which is at 51k miles for an 06/56 plate)? Can I heck, every one I've found is near as dammit £2000-£2500 over Glass' Guide retail and sellers aren't even interested in negotiating. It's weird, like they're all minted and don't actually need to sell anything to make a living. One said "Ah well, its the heated seats, they're quite rare". Yes, I agree they are but for Pete's sake they were a £250 option new, not £2500! And TBH as we all know, options like that don't add a lot (if anything) to used prices anyway.
  18. Just had exactly the same fault with our Audi A6 1.9TDI PD 130. VAGCOM showed fault with Number 1 injector. Car fine when cold but as soon as up to temp we got a lumpy idle, traction light on, and a misfire so bad I thought the motor was going to shear off its mounts. Changed the injector loom in the head (and that is a barsteward of a job on a longitudinal engine cos there is only about 2 inches of clearance to the firewall) and all is fine again. I too thought if its electrical it'll do it all the time but I guess what happens is basically the wiring is OK when cold but as it gets hot it breaks down and you get the issues. My local ex-VAG tech put it down to the car being run on 'non-PD' oil. Should be a doddle of a job on a transverse engine, took me 40 minutes start to finish and I'm not exactly a first class spanner twirler.
  19. Sideways into a tree / lampost, then secondary impacts to drivers side (or vice versa) is my guess from the shape of it. If the occupants are still alive don't they cut the roof off as routine procedure? Looks nasty. Not really sure why it's not a Category A total loss (total destruction). Even a Category B (breaker for spares) shouldn't be advertised on a salvage site with a photo like that. And there is no way you're telling me its a C or D (both repairable).
  20. If it's not written off I'm pretty sure it won't be recorded with any of the major vehicle data agencies (HPI etc) but I once got told by a Porsche service manager that they kept a record of a major accident repair in case the car later got traded back into the group. Most GAP (Guaranteed Asset Protection) policies have lots of small print so you really need to read yours thoroughly and make sure you are clear on what cover it gives you. It's the fact you say you haven't got a policy document that worries me as GAP is an insurance product so the selling of it is strictly regulated by the Financial Services Authority (FSA). I'd think it would be unusual for it to be sold to you and you not to have any paperwork from the dealer. If that was the case they were very very naughty. I'd double check they actually incepted a policy for you with their provider. How much did they charge you for it (all that should have been listed on the invoice), was there a policy summary or a demands and needs statement etc presented to you. If you have no policy document how do you go about claiming on it, you wouldn't know who to contact etc etc. Sadly insurance is a very unexciting item until you need it, and once you need to make a claim that's the point [as people who then have problems realise] it's too late to sort it out if it wasn't right in the first place. Sorry to sound a bit negative but I've got my fingers crossed for you that it all works out.
  21. Is it a factory-fitted Columbus unit, or have you retro-fitted it? If the former I'd just take it back to the dealer if it's not working like it's meant to as I'd guess its still within warranty right?
  22. Thanks, whilst in an ideal world I'd love the facelift L&K, the sad fact is we are not currently in that position so I'm removing the new car from my thinking. I'm not a great fan of PD motors but I'm happy enough at the price to swallow my pride. Maybe in 3 years or so a CR may be an option but not right now. Shame I can't retro fit the new centre trim once I sort out a car but the climate panel is different too :thumbdwn:.
  23. Dealer doesn't know yet, car now delayed for a week :(. Been told it's Onyx, which I assume is grey/black. Hope so as I don't really like the light leather version. My '08 model year Octavia brochure I've had for a while states Onyx was an alternative trim option but that with alcantara panels. I know the one I'm interested in is an '07 car so did they get full leather or leather/alcantara? The only thing that is a niggle is that the centre console is matt on the old shape L&K but on the "new" Octavia it has a piano black finish which - combined with the Bolero head unit and it's sexy colour screen - looks very very nice. Still, a budget is a budget (or it wouldn't be called a budget I guess).
  24. "Skoda" by Dave Randle. I think it may be oldish as my copy only went up to about the year 2000 Fabia / Octavia. Sorry I cannot quote an ISBN number as I haven't seen my copy for a while, it got stored in a house move somewhere.
