Sound like a coil pack failure?
Matt2134 replied to Matt2134's topic in Skoda Octavia Mk II (2004 - 2013)
it was just from Eurocarparts - about £24 I think. I can't remember the manufacturer name, I'll try and have a look and post it. -

Hi all, Thanks for all your replies, and especially stu's kind offer. Speculatively I picked up a cheap coil pack as the car was in limp mode and I'm miles from a garage. Trial and error found that coil pack WAS my problem on cylinder 2, quick change and the car is running perfectly again. I hadn't intended a cheap replacement part, but my dealer insisted the car wasn't part of the campaign, and didn't have one on the shelf to sell either. I think I will now replace at least the cheap new part with a decent one, if not the whole set, and keep the cheapy as a spare. Like stu, I was a bit worried because the dsg box definitely doesn't respond as usual with a cylinder out, and I had fear of dsg failures, so I am now pretty relieved about the whole episode. Just a shame I lost my buyer! Thanks for all your help -

Cheers Mike, I'm going to get it plugged in tomorrow, so fingers crossed its nothing more serious! -

anyone? -
Morning. Yesterday, unbelievably whilst during a prospective buyer's test drive, My TFSI VRS failed. It has been perfect up until that point and the failure was untriggered by any driving etc. Power dropped to limp mode, engine management light came on, EPC light came on, and the car just about limped home. Now when the car starts, the lights don't necessarily come on immediately, but within a minute or so, but in any case the engine seems to be moving more than usual (lateral motion on the block), the car is vibrating some, and the revs at idle are uneven. There is a fumey smell as I run the car. When I put some revs on, it smooths out, at least to the ear, although I haven't tried moving it again. I know it needs a VCDS scan to check, but in the absence of that being available today, I wondered if a bit of armchair diagnosis from the site would back up my hunch? If it is a coil pack, I have two other questions - am I right in assuming a 2010 car is way outside of the coil pack replacement campaign? Also, is there any value to replacing all 4 packs, rather than just the faulty one? Thanks very much. Matt

parkers do an iphone app for pennies that will value your car...

+1 for Ezi Dab from alpine - it works great, looks good because it has a green illumination option, and has a function to pause and rewind radio which is pretty neat - also doubles as an ipod input in the glove box if you don't have MMI. Brilliant bit of kit...

VRS PETROL serviced as a DIESEL?
Matt2134 replied to Matt2134's topic in Skoda Octavia Mk II (2004 - 2013)
Thanks JRW, I feel much happier! I am sure I am doing them a great disservice, and it was probably just an oversight by the guy putting the bill together. Otherwise the service was actually very good! -
Strange one! I took my 2010 VRS Hatch to a Skoda main dealer today for a minor oil service. When the tech gave me the bill, he told me I needed a new Cam Belt in June, and quoted a price. I pointed out to him that this seemed fairly unlikely, what with my car not having a cam belt and all, to which he said 'it's a diesel, isn't it?' Initially relieved that I didn't have a big bill coming, now I am home, I need to know if they thought it was a diesel would the oil be different from what they should have put in? I've no mechanical knowledge, do the two engines use the same oil viscocities? Can someone with better knowledge advise me please? :/ You would have thought the guy doing it would spot a petrol engine with TSI written on the cover in big letters!!!

Shame! I always think there should be a good car swap site, take some of the misery out of buying and selling. It would keep a lot of flighty people happy... -

Or be like me. Buy it for the great performance and driving when in the car, spend all the time out of the car hitting myself with willow branches because my wallet says I should have gone diesel! To be fair, the pace is blistering, and I have had a few M cars etc. 30mpg is pretty good for what it can do, just bad for my bank account... -

Actually I just found a thread with Oobster's old car - very similar, but not the same one...shame -

It is, of course, a hatchback... Actually I was wondering if the previous, previous owner or someone might recognise it on here - is Oobster a current member, I will try to make contact? It would make sense, it feels well looked after - thanks for the heads up -

Yep. Agreed. It was 250 miles away and I didn't want to travel, but did want the car. There were caveats involved if it arrived faulty. -

The only thing I did to the car was to add the DAB unit, everything else was before I bought it - as I say, I took the risk of buying it on spec from the dealer, and hadn't researched the car much, so was pretty clueless. The dealer either didn't recognise or didn't mention the mods. Everything I know about it was from doing some digging with previous owners after I had taken delivery. From what I can tell everything has been professionally and properly done, and the car is absolutely fantastic to drive (much better than I had expected to be honest) so from an ownership point of view, and other than the cost of a turbo petrol car to run, it has been a real bonus. It's just a worry should I sell it. Piston Heads and an honest rundown of what I know seems a good idea. I think if someone gets as far as coming and looking at it they should be pretty impressed. Got to be worth an advert before I go changing wheels maybe. Thanks again for all your opinions.
