  1. Thanks for the advice guys, I have the springs, the images of how to fit them, a can of wd40, a set of spanners...........now to give it all a go. I'll let you know how I get on.
  2. Hi guys, I'm just after a bit of advice. My 05 plate vrs failed its mot yesterday as the ROS handbrake fell below the legal limit - I think it said 14%. I jacked the back up and the rear wheel can be spun whilst the handbrake is on and as the car didn't fail for 'brake failure' I am guessing the foot brake is still working properly on that wheel. I compared ROS to RNS whilst getting my dad to pull the handbrake on and the mechanism for pulling the ROS seems laboured. Effectively, when pulling the handbrake on the RNS brake is catching whereas the ROS isn't. Handbrake cable doesn't seem to be catching as I released the bolt which attaches it and it is pulling freely so I'm guessing it's going to be a new caliper but before I make the purchase is there anything else I should be checking. Thanks in advance.
  3. Thanks for the advice guys. I have decided to go ahead with the change and have booked the car in for the start of next month at a local VAG specialist who quoted me £275 plus VAT for belt, pump and tensioners. I was thinking of leaving it a while longer but there really wasn't ever going to be a good time to fork out this money and as I have no plans to sell the car I might as well just bite the bullet and get it done. I don't want to be driving everywhere worrying about it especially as I have a 900 mile round trip to do over xmas.
  4. ...........at least I managed to save a few quid this weekend by (hopefully) sealing my leaky rear door using the info on this forum
  5. I thought it was 40k miles but yeh it's 60k but either way I guess it needs changing. Unfortunately, it is going to have to wait a couple of months as I simply can't afford it based on the £449 quoted on the skoda website for cam belt and water pump change. I will ring my local garage tomorrow for a quote but I'm guessing they won't be too much cheaper as I understand its a pretty big job...................I think its going to be a lean lean xmas in the brucey household this year!!
  6. I bought a 2005 vRS back in June and it had 38000 miles and FSH which showed that the cam belt had been changed in October 2009 when it had 18000 miles on it. I know that Skoda recommends a change every 40,000 miles or every 4 years which means that according to them it is due for a change this month. My car has now done 40,500 miles but do you really think its is necessary to change the cam belt again after its only done 21,500 miles on the current one? Thanks.
  7. Cheers, I will order a few from skoda. This is the video I was going to follow:
  8. Has anyone got a link/part number for the door card clips? I am going to attempt to seal my rear door this weekend having noticed a soggy footwell after the recent heavy rain here in Newcastle and being an amateur I'm likely to break a few of these in the process.
  9. Thanks for the replies guys, as Hodders said it is a definite friction between brake pad and disk. Its just baffling me that it only happens after about 5 miles (could this possibly be to do with some heat expansion?). I will probably just put up with it for the moment as the garage has assured me that I'm not doing any lasting damage. I will then try replacement pads as I read something last night about some pads suffering from 'hot spots' and 'bobbling'. These sort intermittent squeaks so annoying though!
  10. Hi everyone, I have a 05 Fabia VRS which has recently developed a squeak from the NSF wheel. I have done a search through the forum and found a few suggestions as to the cause but I don't seem to have found a cure yet. The problem is that after about 5 miles of driving the NSF wheel starts squeaking as though the brake pads are rubbing against the disks. The noise is more pronounced when turning right but it even does it when driving in a straight line. The noise appears worse when moving at low speed although this could be just because this is when I can hear it. Once the car has been driven for about 25 miles the noise seems to stop or is certainly not as bad. The noise also stops for a while when I touch the brake pedal. I took the car back to the garage as it was only serviced a couple of weeks ago and they suggested a build up of dust on the brake pads as the pads and disks are in good condition having been replaced about 3k miles ago. I have cleaned the pads but the problem persists so will take it back when I next get the opportunity but given my work schedule at the moment that may be some time. I have also checked that it is indeed the NSF wheel by gently pulling on the handbrake a couple of notches whilst the wheel is squeaking and it continues until I press the brake pedal. I can put up with the noise but its annoying me so does anyone have any suggestions what to try next? Thanks.
  11. Hi all, I am now the proud owner of an immaculate black standard Fabia VRS 05 plate with 38k miles. The information I researched on this forum before making my purchase was invaluable and I am really pleased with the car. There were two minor problems which were: 1) The rear windscreen jet had detatched at the bulkhead and under the wheel arch and; 2) the petrol/diesel cap wouldnt close after I refilled today. After a bit of reasearch and a bit of tinkering both problems are now resolved so thank you very much to the members who posted the helpful guides and links, Brucey
