In light of the recent emissions scandal, we extracted and analysed detailed emissions data for over 300 cars that we’ve tested since 2012, in order to find out what cars are really emitting into our atmosphere. Despite all of the vehicles officially complying with recent EU emission regulations (either Euro 5 or the tougher Euro 6 depending on the age of car) our realistic testing found there is a chasm like gap between what is claimed and what is pumped into our air: • Staggeringly, nearly all (95%) the diesel cars emitted more oxides of nitrogen (NOx) during our tests than official limits allow. One car, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, emitted 15 times as much NOx as the Euro 5 limit; • One in 10 (10%) petrol cars also emitted more NOx than limits allow; • Two-thirds (65%) of petrol cars emit more Carbon Monoxide than the 2006 limit (Euro 4), with one model, the Hyundai Veloster, producing five times the legal limit in our tests; • Despite being a hybrid, the Peugeot 508 RXH also creates more NOx than EU limits. Several petrol hybrids (the worst being the Lexus LS) also create more CO than limits would allow; • 38 of the cars we tested were even unable to meet the ‘Euro 1’ emissions standards from 1993. Best Buys removed In January 1993, 'Euro 1' came into force, and specified emission limits that cars had to meet. In January 1997, Euro 2 replaced it with progressively tougher (lower) limits. In turn, this was superseded by Euro 3 in January 2001, Euro 4 by January 2006, Euro 5 in January 2011 and most recently Euro 6 in September 2015. (All dates refer to new car registrations). We’ve found that of the cars we’ve tested, all of which are officially compliant with either Euro 5 or Euro 6, 85 exceed Euro 3 limits in our tests. This means these 85 cars do not pass the earliest emission regulations from this century. Five of which had previously performed well in enough in areas like performance and ride comfort to be named as Best Buys – but in light of our findings, we have now removed Best Buy awards from these cars. VW ‘Dieselgate’update At the same time, we have also removed Best Buy awards from 23 Volkswagen Group cars following the dieselgate scandal. These 23 cars are all Euro 5 models that have been implied in the current scandal. What’s to blame? Once again, it’s the tests that are to blame. The reason the figures don’t match up with the legal limits is the outdated New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) test. This is the same official test used to measure official fuel economy (mpg), which we’ve repeatedly criticised for being lenient and exploitable. Our assessments also take place in a lab but, in contrast, we use more challenging and realistic driving cycles than the NEDC, based on the new test we are pushing for the industry to adopt. We will also be adding on-the-road emissions tests in the future. Steve.

I was in my local Skoda dealership this morning, and was told by the service manager, that the softwear update would be carried out, automatically, whenever my car was in, unless I specifically requested it not to be done, every time the car was booked in. He, not surprisingly, had no idea of what the update would be, nor any knock on effects to the BHP, MPG, EGR or DPF. Steve.

I'm travelling into Aberdeen every day, a round trip of 98 miles, outside of rush hour times. "A" roads all the way, but plenty of small villages to pass through, where speed limits are 30 - 50 mph. My average speed ( checked on arrival home, each day ) is 39/40 mph. Steve.

Another week, another neck to neck fill. 554 miles 11.58 gallons 47.8 mpg. Steve.

Holiday transport down to Worcestershire. Shoot transport. Game cart. A great all-rounder, IMO. Steve.

I am driving in to Aberdeen, Monday-Friday, a round trip of 98 miles each day, for six weeks. I am taking the opportunity to record brim to brim mpg. 584 miles covered over the last week. Neck to neck fill up. Same fuel sation, same pump. 54.6 ltr. / 12.01 gal. I work that out to a little over 48mpg. The Maxidot, over the last 3500'ish miles shows 47.9mpg. More than happy with those figures for a 140 DSG. Steve.

I have been a little reluctant to post this, but decided it would be selfish of me not to. It is a "head's-up" for all of the males on here, not a plea for sympathy. Back in February, I visited my GP, because I had flu. That delt with, I mentioned that I was having a little trouble going for a pee. Feeling the need, but little flow or pressure. Old Man's Problem! The long and short of it is, that I was diagnosed with Prostate cancer. I opted to have surgery to remove my Prostate, which was done a month ago. Yesterday, I went to see my Consultant to get the Pathology results, which were not good. My future is not a thing of the past yet, but I am not going to be buying a timeshare, that's certain. Now, I am not a Spring chicken (63) but am relatively young to get this disease. The thing is, there are men in their forties getting it! If you have any issues with passing urine, go see your doctor. Do not put it off! A simple blood test to check PSA levels, will show if there is a problem. Most men do not find out until it may well be too late. I am posting this on all of the fora where I am a member. Take my word, you do not want to go down this road. Steve.

Well, no doubt a lot will depend on how the driver sits/fits in the seat, but these seem to be a solution to a non existant problem, to me. Cetainly, no blind spot for me, or SWMBO, with the door mirrors correctly adjusted. Steve.

Maxidot showing 47mpg. Most journeys are in excess of thirty mile round trips, some only eight miles. The thirty mile trips will see 50mpg on the maxidot. I do not have a heavy foot More than pleased Steve.
