  1. I don't think a poorly fitting cabin filter would lead to the smell of diesel. Air in the fuel system, or poor fuel mix will lead to smoke and stink from the exhaust. Not sure if the 1.4 has any common problems with injectors or glow plugs failing? Could be EGR / DPF related too - might even be a cheap and simple sensor playing up. Have you considered getting your hands on a code reader to check the stored codes (local dealer or indie garage)? Might be a good way to point you in the right direction instead of replacing expensive bits until it's fixed. Some fabs have issues with the wiring loom as well which can cause false symptoms.
  2. My van's heater (fan) controls have packed up, and seem to have some related wiring issues. I've removed the old unit, found that replacement parts are £silly and am thinking about other options. There are 4 controls - 3 mechanical (which I can sort), and some lights too (which I can sort), and one electric control for the fan itself. The connector pin has 4 cables - red (Live?), brown (Neutral?), green (thingy that controls the fans speed?) and grey (no idea). There is resistance through red / brown - have tried crossing red and green / red and grey but this doesn't make the fan kick in. I've tested the relay via the battery and a multimeter, which seems to be operational, and I've also tried closing the circuit and replacing - none of which have turned the fan on. What I would like is to have a switch that will just have the fan on full and off, but can't quite work out how. Am happy running new wires from the battery but am now feeling a bit lost. While I could just replace the lot, I would quite like to actually understand how it works. Anyone got a clue?!
  3. could be fouled plugs, injection problem, timing out, sensor not reconnected properly, warped head or gasket not fitted correctly. Is it on one cylinder or all?
  4. Oh good, another needlessly argumentative thread. This is such a nice forum, can you guys just stop it - or at least start your own thread to bitch at each other and leave the rest of us in peace? A new member looking for some advice is introduced to the forum to this - it isn't really going to put across the very helpful and friendly community this forum usually is.
  5. If you're planning to jump start when you get back, do so with care. A very dead battery (as yours will be) can kick sparks out like a goodun when connected to cables. I would remove and charge if you can, although be prepared to buy a new one as car batteries are not designed to be left unused for long periods.
  6. If its the original battery it will probably need replacing after 5 months of not being used, unless you have a trickle charger which usually means removing the battery. Are you leaving on the road or in a garage with access to power? I would also avoid leaving the handbrake on if you can as that will likely seize on after 5 months. I believe you can lock with the key by removing the plastic cover next to the handle.
  7. Wiring fault? My TDI would flash glow plug once a week. Would reset once I restarted the engine, have heard of others on here with wiring loom issues (I think) causing limp mode. I think in your shoes Id be considering either booking the car into a Skoda dealer for a few hours to diagnose or a vehicle electrician to check wiring... Others on here have had more experience with gremlins than me though...

  10. In sort of the same boat as you Craig. Need to change for something bigger bit am getting very poor px offers (6k by Peugeot) so want to sell privately. Same age and mileage but have the estate. It caps at 7k so thats really a disposal price, not px but dealers dont seem to see it thst way anymore. Would be great if you could update the post when you sell and how etc. Good luck, the black is a great looking car so hopefully will go at a good price.
  11. Same power in both engines give or take. Ive owned both for high mileage use and prefer the petrol as I had ongoing sensor, EGR and DPF issues with the diesel. Road tax and mpg will be better with the diesel, although mpg figures seem to be quite sporadic in the diesel. Avoid the Monte if you will be on rough roads as the suspension is pretty hard. I would think you would get a decent low mileage mk 2 for that sort of money with some toys and fun buttons Im sure a dealer would let you have a drive of both so you can get a feel for them.

I had an xbone and didn't really get on with it - despite having consoles since the Megadrive, I got fed up with over marketing and alot of the community (too much rage), sold it and built a basic pc and am really enjoying steam gaming at the moment - was around £400 and runs everything I've tried fine so far. Really good selection of games, better prices than microsoft and lots of free stuff and fun mods. No fees either, really glad I made the change. The only thing I miss were some of the people I played with were pretty nice, yet to build a friend base on steam. Not what you asked I know but thought I'd chip in...
  15. I've had the 1.6TDi (2011), and am now on the 1.2 TSi (2014) - both estates. Was getting 55mpg with the diesel and seem to be getting 45 with the TSi although I'm more in town now. I had issues with the EGR valve with the 1.6 and ongoing sensor problems so I changed it as I'd lost faith in. Both are lovely cars although I'd likely not go for a diesel again it was refined to drive and comfortable, but just don't trust the design now. There are some great deals on the Mk2, the estate is better looking imo, and isn't a big car. If you're not fixed on a diesel I'd get some test drives in, just so you know the difference in how they feel. Good luck with whichever you pick!
  16. Probably not a balljoint or tr end then... What sort of mileage is on the car? Possibly wheel bearing, cv or driveshaft. If you know any nice local garages they should be able to diagnose easily. Bit difficult to diagnose without hands on as there are quite a few components thst make similar noises when they start to fail. You could regrease the cv and check the boot for tears or cracks etc. Quick easy job.
  17. What sort of noise is it? Grinding, knocking etc? Is it rythmical or sporradic? Common noises are ball joints, track rod ends or cv joints.
  18. Take off the cover and inspect. easy to do, and may save you replacing a good belt.
  19. Check under your oil filler cap to see if you have any mayo (gloop caused by mixing oil and water that collects at the top of the engine), this would indicate a head gasket issue. Could also be your water pump (I beleive theyre a common problem on the diesel 1.6, not sure about the petrol).
  20. Alternator, air con pump or water pump bearings, or something rubbing near the aux belt or one of the pulleys maybe? Would be consistant with stationary engine noise, but not if it only happens when the clutch is engaged. Clutch release bearing?
  21. What year and body type is your car? I got an aftermarket one for the mk 2 estate as skoda needed things screwing in. The aftermarket just fits behind the seat latches quite securely. Easy to remove too. Travall i think, was £80ish at the time.
  22. Have you tried listening after a run? You might be able to hear a hiss of pressurised water / vapour escaping. Easier if you have a garage or quiet environment... What kind of mileage is on the car, and do you know when the water pump was last changed?
  23. Anyone had any good or bad experiences from ordering these? My main problem is that I want 3 different types of stickers (1 rear, 1 front and 2 sides) - most places seem to charge a min of £30 per sticker - annoying as one is tiny (should have been £3.50, but they round up to £30).
  24. I've used croc clips / jump leads before. From new battery to car, remove old batter. install new battery, remove clips. Bit faffy though as they're not the most stable and can pop off - this was on an older car with less brains.. Does the superb actually loose anything if you disconnectthe battery?
  25. It's not a car though - the test criteria is different for commercial vehicles. It's gone through the last 3 MOTs with no working speedo. I might have a look into that - I thought the higher speed might confuse things... Thanks. I didn't know that about GPS either - always assumed it was data. I've learned 2 things today... I'll have a day off tomorrow. The service history is great though - it's only done 1000 miles in the last 4 years...
