  1. That sounds like a suggestion I can work with! Will give it a shot many thanks, will post the results!
  2. Hi all, I've tried doing a search but can't find what I'm looking for. I haven't driven my Fabia for a few weeks as I've been away from home (nowhere sunny, unfortunately). Started the engine fine, but the gearstick won't move left and rigtt even depressing the clutch. It will go into third and fourth fine and does feel like it's in gear. I can also push it in for reverse but doesn't go into reverse gear. Was working fine before this. I let it run a while but still no luck, despite firm attempts. Any ideas please?
  3. So the RAC fellow came round and all he did was lift the clutch back up as mrgf describes above. He gave it a few pumps and seemed OK, so I managed to drive it all the way back home. About 8 miles of city driving in rush hour. He did say the problem can come back but I'm just thinking that if it's not completely a lost cause then is there something I can do to fix it?
  4. Hi all, 1.6 tdi 175k on the clock broke down in the middle of the road. Couldn't get into gear and kept stalling, and the clutch wasn't coming back up. It's all the way down! I have a feeling this is the end of my steed's journey as the turbo went several weeks ago, and I expect best thing is to squeeze the last few quid out of it. But just so I know... What usually happens? I've been reading about bleeding the clutch but mine seems too far gone? And I'm presuming it costs 500 or more to replace so not worthwhile in my case but just need to confirm. Thanks all
  5. I've got some warning lights which I think are to do with sticky turbo vanes. Still been driving ok apart from the occasional limp, but today I had the DPF light come on! Haven't seen it for a very long time as I generally do a lot of longer drives. Is it known that the DPF doesn't regen if there's some faults, or shall I give it more of a chance on the motorway (or is that doing more harm)?
  6. Luckily got the MOT done just recently - valid till 31 August 2019!! If the value in good form is less than that then, certainly, spending £1k doesn't make sense to me. In terms of selling at this point - what are the usual options? Put on Autotrader with details of faults, visit a garage that sells 2nd hand cars, do Webyanycar buy cars that have faults? I'll get the Autotrader ball rolling at least, but will hold on to the car for the immediate future while the wheels still roll.
  7. HI all, would appreciate your thoughts as never sold a car before. Summary: 1.6 tdi Fabia SE CR 90, 2010, 175k miles. This is my first car, bought 5 years ago at about 90k miles. Was about to book in for cambelt/water pump (£300 with indie) when noticed warning lights + intermittent limp. Diagnostics - turbocharger boost sensor implausible signal. You can see more detail here. 2 garages reckon it's most likely sooty vanes. Recommend replacing entire turbo (£500 remanufactured part + £200 labour). The idea of £1000 (including cambelt which still needs doing) going into a car that I'd probably not get £2k for at its best is not a pleasant one. It still drives, but EML is always there, glow plugs flash after a bit, and going into limp is 50/50, resetting sorts it out. My options? 1- Sell now for for whatever I can get acknowledging problems and put that to a new car. 2- Carry on driving until "something" happens. (Don't know what that "something" may be, but I'll keep chucking turbo cleaner in the fuel tank.) 3- Fix it up for £1k and keep it going for another x-thousand miles OR sell then at a higher price. Option 2 is the one that allows me to put off the decision and avoid the stress of it lol so the one I like at the moment!
  8. Put some Wynns Diesel Turbo Cleaner in the tank and did a stretch on the motorway. I do feel the car isn't doing the jittery hesitation it sometimes does but maybe too early to see any difference. Still EML and flashing glow plugs. No limp though. Drives fine. Current plan is to do this one more time (tank of premium diesel and turbo cleaner), reset fault codes and see if any difference. Might be deluding myself but anything short of £800 is better at this point.
  9. Took it to one indie today and they took a 5 min look under the hood and reckon the turbo is all carboned up and needs replacing and that the sensor is actually fine and so is the actuator. The number of £400 was thrown around. Said to try a fuel cleaner in the first instance. Edit - that's actually 400 for a non genuine part without labour. Another indie said similar thing and said the number £800!!! At 175k miles not sure it's worth it. Gonna try the cleaner thing. Tonnes of it.
  10. Just to confirm that since Monday, i.e. day 2 of the problem (when I started seeing EML), I am indeed in limp home mode!
  11. Hi! I am the OP who had this problem back in 2015. I don't know how best to describe it, but if you look at the mass air flow apparatus, there's a filter with a rubber seal around the edge. This makes sense, as you want the air through the filter, not the edge. But that rubber seal was kinked, and there was an imperfect seal. I don't know if that helps, but it was very much a physical issue which was easily resolved by undoing a few bits easily accessible by a non-specialist garage, getting the part from Euro then and there (can't remember specific name) and fitting it.
  12. Hi all, hope you're doing well whoever may be reading this! I wanted the advice of your experiences, and add to the case studies - this is the closest complete entry I've seen. Yesterday was plodding along nicely in my 2010 Fabia (1.6 Tdi), clocking up to 175k miles so a good advert for Skoda in general! (Bought at 90k 5 yrs ago.) Yesterday got those blasted glow plugs flashing, disappeared on turning on and off until driving for 5 mins or so. Today get the flashing more constantly + a temperamental EML light. I understand these to be non-specific especially as there's no difference in driving. Had one of the excellent chaps from the VCDS map run diagnostics which showed: I did the first thing anyone does and Googled it. Came across some useful looking things on here: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/18995/P2563/009571 and this is really good: https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/p2563-obd-ii-trouble-code-turbocharger-boost-control-position-sensor-circuit-range-performance-by-jay-safford especially the "what repairs can fix this" bit, at least to my unprofessional eye. (1) I don't know what a turbocharger actuator is but this word comes up when reading about it, and learned that TPS sell them for 170 incl VAT. (2) I've booked into a garage for Thursday (earliest they could do) to have a look at the issue. Not sure what they're looking for, whether there's something to try, or replace the actuator, or if there's a sensor can be replaced... not sure. Any wisdom from any of your experience and knowledge? You have all saved me a lot of time and stress and money in the past so am always grateful for thoughts.
  13. Hey guys, Unfortunately I have damaged my car. The circumstances could not be more embarrassing but may involve a mortal fear of spiders. Thankfully no one was hurt and I've emailed the council about those two bollards :\ Main damage appears to be (1) headlight cover (lights work), (2) mud-guard for the tyre, not sure what proper name is, (3) some bumper damage, (4) plastic damage - bits came off but not sure what exactly. I've been searching online and still I have no idea how much this is going to cost me - I've heard about car breaking, and just general car parts places. Then I can find someone to do the fitting I guess. And perhaps someone with a good eye to have a look and see what I even need first of all. I just want the car to be safe to drive and look decent - a few grazes and a small dent I can live with in a car that's done me well at 160k. I guess what I'm asking is for advice on how to proceed. I can see near-side headlights on ebay and will call and ask tomorrow if they have that grill too. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
  14. The final update - job completed. Many thanks to you all for the help and support. Knowing it was required, getting a good price and driving home with no flashing dashboard lights have left me very pleased. I have attached a couple pictures of the old EGR valve / cooler. It is of no use to me and - unless someone here would like it - I intend to give it to the scrap metal guy. But if you can make use of it then that would be better of course, I'm in South Birmingham.
  15. Sometimes it takes a bit of pressure for innovation and technology to appear. We've been wringing our hands in the UK saying "oh how can we get by on just renewables" for so long now, hats off to the Norwegians for forcing a solution to come about. But as mentioned already, they've been investing in them far more than we have up till now anyway. Maybe there'll be an exception for heavy transport but even so, smart move.
  16. I just really want to appreciate all the contributions from everyone. You are all collectively what make "people power" and are a wealth of experience, knowledge and advice. Thanks to all.
  17. I'm not really sure, they seen to be a highly considered garage but not VAG specialist. I trust they have access to material which points out where it is to them, and the tools/expertise to extract the part? I would be worried though if they didn't realise the extent of the job and turn around to me at the end of it demanding a higher labour charge. But in that case surely my quotation stands up and... It is less than what others quoted me by some amount!
  18. Well all I can say is... I'm glad I don't pay Council Tax! But I see where you're coming from and it does make it less painful I'm fortunate that my car has treated me very well over the last 3 years without much expense so I should be happy it waited this long for me to start work until it demanded something back! My main concerns were (a) doing something unnecessarily expensive or ( getting ripped off. Both my concerns have been allayed here so righty ho better get booked in then.
  19. Have a quote for 600...just to ask if anyone knows an option other than replacement that someone can do, eg. Remap? 600 for a car worth 2k feels... Wrong. But I can't sell it like this in limp, worthless.
  20. Ah ok so the whole thing needs replacing anyway? Thanks for your help!
  21. It's a 2010 car (bought in 2013 second hand with lots of Skoda service stamps), I haven't serviced with them though. The emissions scandal doesn't seem to offer me anything for this either as no proof it causes a problem. Is there anything I could "try" if I do have to shell out for a £600 replacement?
  22. Yes when I bought the car about 3 years ago I tried to get it regassed but he said the compressor had gone. Hopefully that's a separate issue to the one I've got now with the EGR? Admittedly, I've never had fault codes for the AC issue as far as I recall. Also, could it just be a sensor issue or is that irrelevant / just as costly fix?
  23. VCDS Update Since clearing the codes a few days ago when I started this thread, I've managed to get a full VCDS today. Both EGR sensor faults came up again, but separately, one after clearing and cycling ignition. (As for the other fault, my AC has never worked something about the compressor so, whether the other fault is relevant or not I'm not sure.) This is the extent of my knowledge of what to do now, I'll keep googling but if you have any guidance on what to do, whether it can be done with some non-mechanic car enthusiasts or if it definitely needs a big repair, or remap...? Cleared the codes, turned the engine on, got flashing glowplugs immediately! So ran again:
