  1. It was a small stone alright but stuck on the front not the back well wedged between caliper and disk as initially predicted. for some reason was expecting the friction to create a lot more heat and that threw me off a bit. thanks all anyway.
  2. Hi, don't really agree. I get some good "mpg" and do not drive like "Miss Daisy", maybe like "Mr. Buttercup" at times but defo not "Miss Daisy". :P When ever I am driving a company car I always drive it relaxed about the fuel and Tyre impact as I am not the one paying for it. but my personal car...... that one I pay attention to.......
  3. had to move the car on the parking and no noise until after I turned the wheel / braked first time then it felt like the caliper was "loose" but still doing its job somehow..... will take it to Skoda after work as it is really doing my head in (it is still under warranty).
  4. Hi everyone, have a 1.6 tdi Combi and today have noticed what is a quite loud grinding noise coming somewhere I could not identify yet. Have been going round the car to check for excessive heat from the brakes and there is none ( was assuming some small rock/something else may have gotten stuck between the caliper and the disk and could be causing the noise and would also create some extra heat on account of the extra friction) Does anyone have any ideas? regards Rui
  5. Hi As per above replies, being so easy and dealers not putting them rights would make me wonder what else is lurking that may be more serious/expensive - and also, if they are selling them with a warranty surely they should have all enabled features working.....or can I be wrong?
  6. Hi, Could you please state what you mean by "I followed the instructions in the manual. " - what exactly did you do?
  7. thanks for the advice, the full service was done 3000 kms ago so should be fine and it will be in a garage and have occasional use by the wife anyway, just not regular service as it has seen until now. As for selling, as far as I see it, it is not really a good option. The car is great has no issues and when I bought it was already with the idea to own it for many years/kms - so I just see this as a "help" in that direction as I never really liked company cars as they are seen here, I prefer to get the extra pay than to have the car/maintenance/diesel payed for by the company - If I get that same amount I can make a better use of it, lol. But anyway will not complain for a while, the BMW is a great car with a fantastic engine and I am not paying its bills so will enjoy it for a while (and the German autobahn as well).
  8. Hi All, Due to new job starting in a couple of weeks will be taking delivery of my new 330 d touring f31 BMW and the Skoda will have very little work if any at all for weeks on end.... Any advice on how to keep it in a good shape as I do not want to sell it. thanks
  9. Hi, Check if you have been using air con, or running with the windows opened or even the tyre pressure..... - even if you drive at a prox the same tolerances those can affect it.
  10. Hi everyone, I think the thread has gone terribly wrong, it was just a question, nothing else. As for the correct driving etc my view of it is, live and let live - you like to drive slow then do so, you like to drive at moderate speeds do so, you like to drive fast/hard/etc do it - why argue about that? (and stop going on about being illegal as everyone that drives a car has broken speed limits themselves - either by going into a 50 km/h zone not well signaled at slightly over it or by straying over the limit on one of those days when you just have your mind on something else...)..... I live in Germany now and do a few (unrestricted) motorway runs every once in a while, I have a 1.6 tdi cr combi and I can attest to the fact that the brakes feel like they could sometimes need some help - having said this they never let me down, it is just a "feeling" specially when people pull up without using indicators and you have to brake hard. Now, I bought the 1.6 because I do a fair bit of kms everyday, need the space for my weekend activities and have no love in spending my time in petrol stations, the car, even having a ridiculously small engine does what I need from it perfectly well even reaching - occasionally - 160 to 170 kph in the autobahn (aprox 100mph - and yes, in my 1.6 I reach higher speeds than most of you in your VRS's as I do not have to worry about speed traps :P ). Now, I do not know if the 1.6 has smaller brakes than the others (they are standard on mine) but they do "feel" a bit more bite would not hurt. So now just give the man his information and then go on with your discussion, it is quite entertaining to read, specially when people that seem like quite well mannered adults insult each other just because they can.......hell I do the same with speed and go 160 kph on the motorway for the same reason, because I can. :P
  11. Hi, I have a combi 1.6 TDI cr. I do drive it with some load on the boot (weekends out) that amounts to aprox 160kg. I get averages of 4.3 l/100km which equates to 66 mpg UK. The thing is when I do that I drive with economy in mind (change between 2000/2300 rpm). I get about 4.5 l/100 km (63 mpg) on normal weekly driving to and from work (very steep hills and heavy traffic mix of 45% motorway and 55% b-roads) with no economy in mind but also no extra load on the car (just 2 people). When I am running it sedately I can get as low as 3.9 l/100 km 72 mpg (b-roads sticking to about 80km/h) and when on German Autobahn (I live in Germany but work in Luxembourg) I can get as low as 5.3 l/ 100 km (53 mpg). My regular brim to brim calculations with week runs and weekend loads are 4.4 l/ 100 km which is 64mpg lowering a bit when I have long motorway runs to make. It mainly depends on how you drive it, when my girlfriend drove the car for a few weeks when I was out she only got around 5.1 l/100 km which is 55 mpg. But, that said, I do agree with some of the comments here, I see no sense in changing car for the fractional gains in economy as if you spend an extra 1000 or 2000 on the exchange it will take you 1000's of miles/kms to get that back in fuel savings. Maybe, and please do not take this as an insult or anything like that, just checking the tyre pressure regularly may help with improving the economy (not opening windows etc....) and if the issue is warranty check prices for warranty providers (but check their coverage as well).
  12. I have a 1.6 tdi and so far, in 2.5 years, only 1 H7 bulb. Apart from the stupidity of having to remove the entire unit they seemed easy to replace.
  13. bodywork looks great, but you forgot to clean the wheels......their so dirty they turned black...
  14. I use 1 from Energiser, "Y" shaped, and have had no issues with both on (one for TomTom europe XL - large screen) and girlfriend watching movies on mobile with mobile connected to it on the second port or phone charging. use it on a daily basis, never had any issues. at the end of the trip i just take it off.
  15. 1.6 tdi cr/manual, 29.630 kms on the clock just going to service next Monday. 0.00 liters of oil top up so far.
  16. as I said previously Mike, I am quite happy with it as it is from factory. no mods whatsoever and no issues with it. Best thing before you change to the 1.6 cr is go for a drive in one. I have tried Rapid and was quite disappointed with the interior and space, as I am getting to a new job that includes company car the Octavia is to be handled by the wife and she is not comfortable parking it and would prefer a smaller one - so far have convinced her that besides the economical sense of keeping this car (only 30.000kms on the clock and no issues, good space for the upcoming family addition) she will only use it on weekends every once in a while (we work quite close to one another and have similar entry/exit times so do the commute together). So far am winning that one, only thing she does not fight me (too much) is on the cars (and emphatic "too much" there....). We had one Rapid for a weekend with the same engine as the Octavia and another for another weekend with a 1.2 petrol with the same hp(105) and I have to say I prefer the petrol. a lot more fun round the tight mountain passes here - but disappointing interior and you will feel like you are downgrading too much. I will still keep my Octavia 1.6cr for a very long time (specially now getting the company car).
  17. Hi, I have the 1.6cr and have previously had a 1.9 from a Seat Cordoba coupe(and some others). You will miss the torque! a lot. But it is a nice little engine, I am quite pleased with it and have a Combi that takes quite a bit of abuse in terms of weight and speed on German motorways. If you just want the comfort and something that keeps up with traffic it will do nicely, if you drive like a boy racer it will do your head in and be quite a lot less economical than the 1.9 or 2.0 but will also be the noise levels you get on it (even more noticeable if you use the Premium Diesel). There is someone here from Portugal that has his 1.6CR on 140 instead of the 105 so he can be a quite good source of info on the engine mod if you want a little more poke from the engine (also has a combi in Black, do not really remember the handle). As for the stupid comment about speed prior to this "(i.e. not driving like a faggot 24/7)"........just....... medical attention, do get some.....
  18. andy2286 - best thing to do is dump her and do as with the car, get a newer model (quieter, more environmentally friendly, better looking, better performance, etc...)
  19. I have a 1.6 tdi Combi - no mods or upgrades to it, just a standard elegance model with a couple of extras on it. It pulled a MTPLM of 1320 KG with no problems on a round trip to Portugal and back from Luxembourg (3874 kms total). Have not recorded MPG but it was quite high and it struggled a bit on uphill sections (combination of weight and air resistance). Am moving to just over the border in Germany now and have made quite a few trips with very heavy items towed (avg weight is about 900KG) with a max of 1300kg on a low profile trailer and it was quite a lot better (even with the 1300kg load) but I do go from an avg (brim to brim calculated) of 4.1 l/100kms (3.9 on maxidot) in normal conditions to 7.3 on Maxidot with the trailer loaded. The point is, you can - it will probably not be a pleasant drive (even with other cars it will not if you care about what you are towing), you will not be the most popular guy on the road and it will, most probably, hit your pocket a lot more than with a 2.0 TDI. I for one am quite happy that for most of the year/use it is very frugal (used to be more but stopped driving like a monk - life is too short and the difference is just 0.3 l/100kms) and it does "ok" for those little times when you need it to work a lot harder.
  20. Go for it. do it. I have a 2012 1.6 TDI combi with it and for long trips or motorways it is fantastic - no pain in legs after a couple of hours driving. Also very good for avg speed cameras.
  21. Hi FSA, I believe you are not clearing the DPF correctly, it should be done in 4th or 5th at a min of 2.000 RPM, at least as per the Manual This is a direct quote from the manufacturer: What should I do if the DPF warning light comes on? This light could illuminate between 10 and 1,000 miles. When the light shown illuminates, it does not mean there is a fault on the vehicle. It means the vehicle needs help to carry out DPF regeneration. The procedure involves the vehicle being driven in a certain way to help increase the exhaust temperature. Drive continuously for about 10-15 minutes at a speed of at least 40 mph in fourth or fifth gear (automatic gearboxes select Sport mode), to maintain an engine speed no less than 2,000 rpm. Higher engine speeds are perfectly acceptable where conditions allow. If the conditions described are not met and the DPF warning light does not switch off, the level of soot in the DPF will continue to increase. This will increase to a certain level, where two warning lights will appear together. after forced regen run it, every once in a while on a motorway doing the above and you should have no issues with DPF - I have had none so far following the manufacturer advice. Also be aware of DPF deletes as, if UK will follow central europe standards in any near future, DPF's will be checked on MOT's by measuring soot from exaust and the car will be impounded until you arrange a new DPF to put back in (happened to 4 people already in Luxembourg and just the fine was 2500 Euro plus a heavy increase in insurance as it is considered a mod to the car that was not declared to insurance). Maybe that will not be included on UK MOT and you guy's will be fine ..... really do not know.
  22. lol, nope, not in 4th gear, I just stopped pushing it as I had an audible speed limiter in the car (even if I do not think it would go much faster - it was fully loaded -, mine has 17000 kms on the clock).
  23. Have a 1.6 tdi as well (combi) and mine on German Autoahn did not go faster then about 180 kmh (111 mph). Is your engine/ECU standard or remapped?
  24. I've got the 1.6 tdi (105 hp) and it is perfect for what I do. Great MPG, lots of space (have the combi) and goes quite ok (but if you press on too much MPG suffers a lot more than the bigger diesels). I would highly recommend it. If you can stretch to the Greenline verson go for it (when I got mine they had none of those just the regular 1.6 tdi). Just made a trip from Luxembourg to Portugal this xmas (4 000 kms return) and it was very good - quite confortable, very economical (4.5 l/100km #62.7mpg# overall with some pushing over France - 140km/h) and overall very relaxed on both trips (car lightly loaded on the way in and very loaded on the way back). Very happy I got it.
