  1. I suppose it was naive of me not to check it sooner. I've just been checking the paperwork and i've done 1,200 miles. I suppose it was lucky the warning light came on just in time. The red light hasn't come on at all, just the orange warning on the maxidot. Any ideas why the light might still be on? I will get it to the dealers, who, I quote, "we'll get the car looked at as soon as possible but we are really busy because everyone's car seems to be breaking down at the moment". Very encouraging...
  2. Hi all, I didn't want to start a new thread and thought this might be a good place to post this. I had a new engine fitted at the end of September and have driven 1,500 miles since. I usually check the oil levels on my cars every couple of months and was due to check the VRS this weekend. I was slightly shocked when I got in the car yesterday afternoon and was presented with the orange/yellow "check oil level" warning on the maxidot. I check the dip stick and it was just below the hatched area so I topped up with 1.3 litres to take it up to three quarters of the hatched area. When I started the car the light came on a couple of times in about 30 seconds and didn't come back on so I thought all was ok. As I was driving to work this morning the warning came on at start up and then every 15 minutes until I got to work (took 50 minutes in total). I checked the level when I got to work and it was still at three quarters - the same as it was after top up last night. The same thing happened on the way home and after checking the levels when I first got home and an hour later it was still the same level. My questions are: 1: How much oil has the car actually used in the last 3 months and 1,500 miles? Is it the 1.3 litres or so I topped up? Is this normal usage expected for a new engine? (Three questions I know but related) 2: Why is the light still coming on?!? 3: Should I go back to the dealers to get them to look at it? Thanks Martin
  3. I found out when I went to the Skoda dealer for the repair I asked for a print out of the history of the car. This showed the repairs/fixes and service details. I had no problem with the performance of the car until I was driving home from Tesco, put my foot down after slowing down for a car turning right and the exhaust emissions light came on. After pulling over the car it went into "safe mode" and limped home. Skoda assist were with me next morning. I cant quite remember what the problem was but think it had something to do with the piston rings. Hopefully you have not got a problem but there's no harm finding out if the car has had any previous issues.
  4. I don't want to alarm you and I hope it's not the case but I had oil on spark plug 1 (not sure which side that was) but ended up being with Skoda dealer for 4 weeks having a new engine put in. The car had done 17300 miles. Have you got any history of the car? I found out mine had a couple of attempted fixes for high oil usage but ended up with an engine replacement.
  5. I finally got the vRS back today after 4 weeks. It had to have a new engine as it obviously had a bad one. I don't know if it's because I've been driving a 13 plate Octavia but the steering feels a lot heavier than I remember it. I don't know if it was just the journey home but it also felt like the steering was pulling to the left quite a bit and again I don't remember it doing that before. Am I imagining it or could this have been caused by having a new engine fitted?
  6. I got a call from the dealers on Wednesday saying I am having a whole new engine fitted as advised by Skoda. They reckon I should have it back by the end of next week. I happy to hear that but getting a bit annoyed it's taken so long. It has been 3 weeks today. My new Avon tyres are still sitting in the local National auto centre waiting to be fitted.
  7. I spoke to the service manager today and he says they're half way through the consumption test. He also said (If I remember correctly) They put a probe down the bores and there was oil. It was bypassing the piston rings? He is "90% certain Skoda will tell them to change the block - it will be a new engine basically" I wonder how much it's costing to hire me Octavia. Am I right in thinking if they replace the engine and any other parts the warranty on them parts is automatically extended to 2 years? Martin
  8. I've just spoken to the dealers who are in contact with Skoda regarding carrying out an oil consumption test and have been told the car will also need an "extensive road test" does anyone have any thoughts about whats happening with it or what they have already found?
  9. Not had an update. They said on Saturday they might not get to look at it until today as they were booked up. I've been driving a 13 plate Octavia 1.6 diesel. Not a bad car, quite comfortable. The mpg has been impressive - 66 mpg on a run to and from the south coast. Only drove the vrs for a week but really missing it. I'll be on to the dealers tomorrow.
  10. I took it to the dealers yesterday morning and im getting a hire car delivered on Monday morning. This was arranged by Skoda assist. The RAC guy said he tested the coils and said they were fine but just didn't know why the spark plug was covered in oil. I don't know if its had the ECU update or what fuel it has been running on. I filled it up with Tesco momentum 99. I'll wait and see what the dealer reports back.
  11. Gonna get the Avons when I get the car back from Skoda. Yep that's right, had it a week and it broke down last night. The 'control system for exhaust gases warning light' came on, the car went into safe mode so I just made the last half home. I phoned Skoda assist - who I must say are very good - the RAC guy said there was a fault with cylinder 1 and said the spark plug was covered in oil. He cleaned it up and was running fine but thinks Skoda need to look at it to see why it happened. I am now very upset I won't get to enjoy my new car for however long. Anyone else had this problem?
  12. Maybe there's a shortage of them in my area or they've become so popular the prices have crept up. The cheapest fully fitted option I could find is £104.99 a tyre. Has anyone tried the Avon ZZ5's? As long as they're the same or better than the Dunlops I'll be happy. I've only had the car a week and im loving it but now im sad I can't take it for a decent test drive this weekend.
  13. Where did you get them for that price? I've looked online and phoned pretty much every tyre fitter in the area. I've not been able to get them for under £100 a tyre.
  14. Thanks for the comments. I had pretty much decided to go with two new fronts. I've gone with the Avon tyres as they seemed about the best spec for the price. I'll keep you updated on how they are compared to the Dunlops.
  15. Hi, I have the Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres on the car but have damaged one of the fronts. Can anyone advise if it is still ok to drive or if I should get just that one tyre replaced or both fronts? I've got about 3-4mm left on them. Ive been looking at different tyres and the Avon ZZ5 XL seems to have good reviews and look good value for money for the performance. Wet grip B and fuel efficiency E (Assuming I replace both) 205/40 R17 http://www.tyrerevie...re/Avon/ZZ5.htm I have found them for £151.80 fully fitted for 2 Avon ZZ5 XL The popular Uniroyal Rainsport 2 XL are £216.82 for 2. Are they really that much better than the Avons? They have the same grip and fuel efficiency rating. Thanks! Martin
