  1. Thanks for the input. I am taking the car over to the dealer, Tue 13th, today. I will raise the points mentioned above and see what they come up with. The car has shown some odd behaviour in the past, such as intermittent heavier steering feel and poor battery charging during a run. I am now thinking all these issues are related.
  2. My initial thought was that the problem is close to the mains supply or distribution, which is why I looked at the battery terminals. What is harder to fathom is why it comes back to life without moving or touching the car. It goes completely dead and then springs back to life without any input from me. I guess something could be getting hot, a partial short, which causes a power break and then cools and the connection is re-made? Not as I have detected any sign of hot/burning electrical contacts.
  3. Yes, there are warning lights on for steering Ect after power comes back on, the clock is also reset. I have booked it in at my regular Skoda dealer. I will point them at a possible ignition switch fault when I drop the car in. When there is a fix sorted I will update this thread. Thanks for the reply .
  4. Hi all, my 13 plate superb is doing strange things. The car will go dead after switching off the engine. Up to now if it is left for a few minutes it will spring back to life, the battery is the original but is charged and starts the car without a problem. I have checked the battery terminals and they are fine with leads securely fitted to the battery post's. The car will run OK when started and the engine does not cut out in use. Anybody experience something similar or know what it might be ?
  5. Makes you wonder what will happen once we are all being transported by automated cars. The police will suddenly find they have an extra 50% of shift time to chase the criminal element.
  6. I thought this had already happened in Scotland ? at about the same time as drink drive limit was reduced. Or was it quietly dropped. Scottish police were not flavour of the month a while back I seem to remember.
  7. That would be why I couldn't find it then, Will have another look tonight. Thanks.
  8. I had a look for this on prime Thursday night and could only see series 1 ? Will have to go and have another look.
  9. I fitted a full set in September 225/45/17 cost was £135 per corner, all in. Dry performance is at least a match for the std fit Pirelli cinturato and a bit quieter. As we had snow yesterday here in Staffordshire I did manage a run out on the white stuff and they were fine on new laid snow. The toughest test was an uphill bend over a railway bridge, quite steep and tight, no wheelspin or slip detected or flashing lights on the dash. As long as wear is ok I would fit them again.
  10. In space, no one can hear you scream The Martian was much better.
  11. oops, did not spot his link. Great piece though.
  12. And it came to pass, in the land of Britain, that the High Priestess went unto the people and said, Behold, I bring ye tidings of great joy. For on the eighth day of the sixth month there shall be a general election. And the people said, Not another one. And they waxed wroth against the High Priestess and said, Didst thou not sware, even unto seven times, that thou wouldst not call a snap election? And the High Priestess said, I know, I know. But Brexit is come upon us, and I must go into battle against the tribes of France, Germany, and sundry other holiday destinations. And I must put on the armor of a strong majority in the people’s house. Therefore go ye out and vote. And there came from the temple pollsters, who said, Surely this woman will flourish. For her enemy is as grass; she cutteth him down. He is as straw in the wind, and he will blow away. And the trumpet of her triumph shall sound in all the land. And the High Priestess said, Piece of cake. And there came from the same country a prophet, whose name was Jeremy. His beard was as the pelt of beasts, and his raiments were not of the finest. And he cried aloud in the wilderness and said, Behold, I bring you hope. And suddenly there was with him a host of young people. And he said unto them, Ye shall study and grow wise in all things, and I shall not ask ye for gold. And the sick shall be made well, and they also will heal freely. And he promised unto them all manner of goodly things. And the young people said unto him, How shall these things be rendered, seeing that thou hast no money in thy purse? And he spake unto them in a voice of sounding brass and said, Soak the rich. And again, Pull down the mighty from their seats. And the young people went absolutely nuts. And they hearkened unto the word of Jeremy, and believed. For they said unto themselves, Lo, he bringeth unto us the desire of our hearts. He cometh by bicycle, with a helmet upon his head. And he eateth neither flesh nor fowl, according to the Scriptures. For man cannot live by bread alone, but hummus is quite another matter. And the High Priestess saw all these things and was sore. And she gathered unto her the chief scribes and the Pharisees and said unto them, What the hell is going on? And they said unto her, It is a blip, as if it were a rough place upon the road. But they said unto themselves, When the government was upon her shoulders, this woman was mighty. But now that she has gone abroad unto every corner of the land, she stumbleth. For surely it is written that ruling and campaigning are as oil and water, and there shall be no concord betwixt them. And the chief scribes wrote upon tablets, saying, Jeremy is false of tongue. He hideth wickedness in his heart. And his sums do not add up. And nobody paid any attention. And the elders rose up and said to the young people, If ye choose Jeremy, he will bring distress in your toils and wailing upon your streets. Do ye not remember the nineteen-seventies? And the young people said, The what? And the elders spake again, and said to the young people, Beware, for he gave succor in days of yore to the I.R.A. And the young people said, The what? And the young people said, Jeremy shall bring peace unto all nations, for he hateth the engines of war that take wing across the heavens. And he showeth respect for all peoples, even unto the transgender community. And the elders said, The what? And it came to pass that the heathen of this land came among the people, with fire and sword, and slew many among the faithful. And great was the lamentation. And the High Priestess waxed exceeding wroth and said to the people, Fear not. For I shall bind your wounds and give ye shelter from the heathen, and shall take up the sword against them. And there came again pollsters from the temple, who said, Will the people not vote for her in this hour of need? And nobody paid any attention. And it came to the vote. And the elders went up to vote, and the young people. And the young people were as a multitude. And in the hours of darkness there was much counting. And the young people watched by night, and the elders went to bed. And there came in the morning news that the High Priestess had vanquished the prophet Jeremy. But the triumph of the High Priestess was as the width of a nail. And she was vexed. And the elders and the chief scribes and the Pharisees spoke among themselves, yea, even in the corners of their houses. And there was great rejoicing amidst the multitude of the young. And they took strong wine, and did feast among themselves. And there were twelve baskets left over. And of the pollsters there was no sign. And the people saw Jeremy and said, Surely this man has won? Doth he not skip in gladness like a young hart upon the hills? And there was great murmuring among the elders. And they said unto themselves, Weep not. For the High Priestess doth but prepare the way. Cometh there not one who is greater than she? And they said, Behold, for the hour of the redeemer is upon us. And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the Prince of Peace. And they cried in one voice, Boris. And the young people said, Oh, ****. And the people gave tongue, and made supplication unto the Lord, saying, Lord, let our cry come unto thee. And the Lord thought the whole thing was absolutely hilarious. And then the people said, Lord, what shall we do regarding Brexit? For henceforth the High Priestess shall be as weak as a newborn lamb. How shall we hope for continued access to the single market? And the Lord said, The what?
  13. They are the actual numbers registered for uni courses in UK. 45,140 are EU applicants out of a total of around 600,000. The overseas countries students come from the rest of the world, not in EU.
  14. Tanked might be a slight exaggeration. Total UK higher education courses for 2017 has now reached 601,770, of those 496,010 UK applicants for uni - 45,140 EU applicants (down by 6%) overseas countries has increased by 2% to 60,630. 6% of 45,000 is about 2,700 students. There are similar reductions (%) for England (decrease of 5%) Wales (down 6%) and Northern Ireland (down 4%) https://www.ucas.com/corporate/news-and-key-documents/news/march-deadline-uk-higher-education-shows-uk-applicants-down-4-and-eu-applicants-down-6
  15. A great overview of Brussels by Varoufakis, I particularly like his description of the Brussels liberal establishment. "They are like a person who murders their parents and then pleads for leniency at the court on the grounds they are an orphan." Some more of his insight -
  16. The Lib Dems official stance is pro EU, or it was.
  17. Not sure how useful it is comparing consecutive quarters for monitoring the state of UK economy. If last years first quarter is used, and the year before that,as a comparison they also show reduced activity. A first quarter drop is as much to do with seasonal trends than a sign of reduced demand. Total spending by consumers was about the same indicating there is no measurable pull back of confidence. Manufacturing was also up 0.5%.
  18. It looks like Timmy Farron has just realised that his pro EU stance has got him nowhere in the polling over the last nine months and is trying to do the mother of all U turns. "Tim Farron has described himself as a "bit of a Eurosceptic" despite his party's pro-EU stance. Mr Farron cited his 2008 resignation from the Lib Dem front bench because he wanted a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty." Hang on, did I read that right, Timmy Farron likes EU referendums. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-39761746
  19. Looks like an article full of ifs, buts and maybe's, something from the days of project fear. In other news - The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has upgraded UK growth for the second time in four months to further reflect the resilience of the domestic economy so far in 2017. In its latest World Economic Outlook, the IMF increased its UK GDP growth forecast by 0.5 percentage points to 2% for 2017, the biggest upgrade of any major economy meaning it is expected to grow faster than all other G7 economies besides the US. In January, the IMF revised its UK forecast by 0.4 percentage points to 1.5% on stronger forecasted figures, meaning the country has seen an upward revision of 0.9 percentage points in total so far in 2017.
  20. The SNP did so well last time it's hard to see them matching those results again, the only way when you have reached the top, is down.
  21. Was not expecting that this morning. Given the political poles though it makes sense.
  22. What's this about then, call for a snap general election ?
  23. It looks more like the EU making undeliverable threats. “The City, which thanks to the EU, was able to handle clearing operations for the eurozone, will not be able to do them,” François Hollande said this week. “It can serve as an example for those who seek the end of Europe . . . It can serve as a lesson.” This threat too easily simplifies a complex relationship between trading and location across global markets. There are solid reasons to believe that these calls will be counter productive and consequently, not acted upon. Clearing houses manage credit risk in the event one party in a swap deal defaults. London has become a world leader for the clearing of all types of currency-denominated derivatives, thanks largely to the widespread acceptance of English law. In the clearing world the euro is one currency among many, including the US dollar, Japanese yen and the Polish zloty. Yen, euro and sterling trades are cleared in the US. Deutsche Börse’s Eurex handles futures contracts for UK gilts and sterling. Governments all around the world are quite comfortable with the idea of having currency-denominated instruments traded and cleared outside their borders — and with many investors using highly regulated London clearing houses. To demand that only euro-denominated swaps can be cleared in the eurozone is fine, however such a standard would have to apply to everyone around the world. That would not only create an anomaly, it would also indicate that Europe may be bringing in a measure of protectionism — which could well prompt a retreat from investors. Crucially, the euro is a global reserve currency and so can be traded and cleared anywhere, just as the dollar is. A demand to have euro-denominated swaps only cleared in the eurozone would represent a step back from that. It may also spur tension within Europe. The ECB clearing house policy of four years ago — that London successfully countered — was largely pushed by France, and many German representatives were privately at best lukewarm in their support. One unknown is whether that raises issues about competition. One could not also rule out American banks and exchanges (especially the CME Group) setting out a legal challenge to a policy that tilts the playing field towards particular European corporations. The CME has been cited in antitrust investigations before — notably into the CDS market. Overall it’s hard to see this call for more euro-denominated clearing in the eurozone as anything other than another French effort to pull business back to Paris. It has tried to do so in the past and if it comes to pass, some business will move out of London. Rules are rules, after all, and the EU is likely to try to punish the UK in some way. But in the end that might be counter productive to a continent trying to stimulate economic growth. Much like the financial transactions tax, which started off with a great wave of enthusiasm until the details got in the way. Ultimately, markets don’t like being told where to go and what to do for political and not systemic risk reasons. https://www.ft.com/content/e7b6a752-3dec-11e6-8716-a4a71e8140b0
  24. The Spanish veto is not the standard one that any member state could trigger, it is an additional demand that no agreement between the UK and the EU may apply to Gibraltar without a separate agreement between Spain and Britain. This means that Madrid could potentially block Gibraltar's access to any trade deal Britain negotiates with the EU. EU officials included it in the guidelines as it was one of several areas that involved joint or contested jurisdictions and the EU is ‘pursuing’ the interests of the remaining 27 member states. It does though show how far reaching the EU wants its powers to extend over member nations. Had the UK voted to stay in the EU would we have also been instructed on future sovereignty of the Falklands, supposing a new trade deal with Argentina and friends was negotiated? On Scotland’s bid to join, Spain said they “would not "initially" veto an attempt by an independent Scotland to join the European Union after Britain has left the bloc.” This is not the same as saying Spain would not object to it at a later stage, and they very likely would.
