  1. Ohhh gotcha, didn't realise you could push the stick up/down to shift. Cheers guys, blonde moment there. Never driven an auto/semi-auto before.
  2. Okay, this might sound stupid, and I'm sorry if this has been done to death, I did have a quick search before I posted this, but how does the DSG box actually work? For context, I'm looking at a 2005 octavia TDI PD sport with DSG box. The car is a way away from me so I can't go view it just yet. Anyway, I know DSG is an auto box, with the option of manual shifting, but the stick looks like a regular auto stick, and I can't see any flappy paddles in the photos. Has the seller mis-described? Cheers all!
  3. I'm a long time fan of top gear, and think this can only be a good thing. It used to be vaguely informative, and they had a laugh and a mess about too. It's gotten a bit too ridiculous now though really, and some of it was just plain cringeworthy. Hopefully with Chris Evans, it'll be a proper car show again.
  4. Aye I tend to give lorries a pretty wide berth no matter where they're from. Way too easy for one to flatten you and not even notice.
  5. Awesome, decent power out of that engine! I rather fancy a newer caddy, would be really good for mountain biking.
  6. Start of non-copied posts! Sorted the mirror switch today as the knob had been broken off, though it still doesn't work quite right - it won't adjust the driver's side on one axis, moves the passenger side as well. Bit weird but not a major issue. Half the reason I replaced it was just because it looked gash broken.
  7. In case anyone is vaguely interested, I just sorted the washer pump - had to bodge it a little as I ordered the wrong one, this one only has an outlet for the front jets, however since my rear wiper motor is dead too, I'm not overly bothered. I'll get around to sorting that some other time along with the right pump. At least it's not an MOT fail now. Few more jobs left to to: * Tighten or replace AC belt - it's started making some nasty noises when the AC is on * Mirror switch (in the post) * window switches (in the post) * rear right door central locking actuator (in the post) * rear left door doesn't open at all - need to look at this and work out what the problem is... * new radio - the current one is temperamental Ah well, I've gotten some of the important bits out of the way now.
  8. Couple of jobs done: * front indicator cluster replaced * polished headlights Headlights still aren't perfect, but are much better than before, should hopefully have some decent light output now. Before: After: Bit of an improvement I think, they still look a bit yellow, but they're nowhere near as frosted.
  9. Ordered a new screenwash pump last night, door mirror switch, indicator cluster. Will fit these during the week when they turn up. First task - bit of a clean. The car had been valeted, but not very well. lifted up the back seats to find a crapload of muck, dog hair, and what I can only assume to be a puddle of dog ****. Armed with a bucket, cloth, anti-bac spray and a hoover, it's now a lot better. Glad I won't have to look at that mess every time I have to put the seats down. Minging. Before: After:
  10. I'll copy the first couple of posts over from pistonheads so apologies if it's a little odd - yes I got rid of the Skoda on Saturday just gone (sorry), stayed VAG though! Bought the Octy as a shed bargain a few months ago fancying something a bit bigger/faster than my Fabia, which was my first car, though I never managed to get over the fact that it wasn't an estate - I need something roomy/practical for mountain biking, and the hatch just wasn't cutting the mustard. Couple that with having a bad back, and the flat boot lip on the passat certainly helps. Anyway, bit of an opportunistic buy this one - seeing family for easter weekend, happened to spot this on autotrader a few miles away from my Aunty's house where I stayed last night. Stopped in to have a look, decided I liked it and parted with my Octavia and £200 for it (listed on autotrader for £800). Perhaps not the bargain of the century, but considering I got the car I wanted for shed money and the ease of the situation, I'm happy. The important bits - 1.8t engine, 150 brake and it certainly goes! Cam belt changed last year, 164k on the clock (not bad for a 16 year old car), full service history, mostly VW, and no funny noises etc. - all the mechanical credentials are there. The not so good bits - some cosmetic/minor issues that can and will be dealt with - rear wiper doesn't work screenwash jets not working indicator glass missing on one side (this and screenwash are priority number 1) keys are a bit tatty and need batteries changing few bits of interior trim missing/need replacing (electric mirror knob, drivers window button etc.) rear doors don't open from the outside, one doesn't open at all headlights need a polish needs a bit of a clean All little niggly things that can be fixed easily enough. She goes well though - just drove her 80 miles to my mum's house and didn't skip a beat. Very happy. I'll stick some more photos up later if anyone cares. (I have photos of the fabia and octavia if anyone really really cares) [footnote]Edited by samj2014 on Saturday 4th April 17:17[/footnote]
  11. Yep, many morons on there that don't seem to make it over to the forum... The forum is a much nicer place.
  12. I've found myself going soft recently as well, I'm not sure I like it... That said, in my CD changer I currently have Black Tide, Machine Head, Lamb of God and 36 Crazyfists, so I'm not going too soft.
  13. Oops, I saw "yesterday" as the post time, not realising it was past midnight. If it were sheep it would be a different matter
  14. Bugger, if I'd seen this one earlier I could've actually managed it as I parked right near a field full of cows.
  15. I move into my new house on Friday the 13th. That said, my luck has been ****e enough recently, how much worse can it get?!
  16. I used a spoon to butter the toast for my beans on toast last night, mostly because I couldn't be arsed to wash a knife. You can tell I'm still not fully over my student days! Though I then realised I had to wash a knife anyway as eating beans on toast with a spoon and fork would've been difficult...
  17. Probably doesn't help that from a young age, women are taught that they can't do practical things such as DIY, car mechanics etc, that these things should be left to men and that by flaunting their femininity they can get men to do these things for them. We all know that it's not true (well, perhaps apart from that last point), but there are some people that are genuinely useless. Though for every woman that wouldn't know the difference between a spark plug and a sink plug, there's a man that's just as bad. As an aside, I would never let SWMBO loose under the bonnet of my car (though she sometimes helps with fiddly bits as she has smaller hands than me, with VERY strict instructions). I have male friends that I also wouldn't let anywhere near my car.
  18. And they've usually got one foot in the grave.
  19. If it helps (it probably doesn't), a friend of mine has a 2009 (i think) renaultsport twingo, and it's a ridiculous little car, but apparently heaps of fun. The engine just revs and revs! Though it does suffer from the usual french build quality, but I guess if you're buying a car like that, that's not top of your priorities.
  20. I'm not doing bad considering my extended absence from this thread Might find time start participating again soon!
  21. That pun put a damper on my day.
  22. Never snows here in Bangor, no need for winters. Pretty fed up of it being so ****ing cold though.
