vRS TDi DSG - Sport Mode and fuel economy
Jollyroger replied to Mence's topic in Skoda Octavia Mk III (2013 - 2020)
Hat off to you Mence for having the patience with sport mode, I find it so annoying the way it holds the gear for too long and revs an engine that doesn't really need revving high. In a petrol I imagine it's a lot better. I only use it when I'm gunning it, but even then I switch to paddles for more control over changes. -
Ditto here, about 14k on mine as which is rubbish. New SC5's do seem a bit quieter but it's only the fronts so far.

vRS TDi recall campaign - boost sensor
Jollyroger replied to fewie's topic in Skoda Octavia Mk III (2013 - 2020)
Mine has developed this problem, went in for service yesterday and they could not find a fault. With it being an intemitent problem even a road test might not show it up. Looks like I'll have to live with it for a while longer! -

Jollyroger replied to Iamholam's topic in Skoda Octavia Mk III (2013 - 2020)
Yes I have noticed this and was going to post about it a while back. Not as much as a shunt but hesitation when balancing the throttle after acceleration. It has only become noticeable in the last 3 - 4000 miles (now at 18k). I have DSG and not sure if it is that or it happens in a manual as well. Needs a service in a few weeks so will ask the question at the dealer. -
The reason I got my first Skoda is clearer...

VRS seats which are made by Recaro, very comfortable. -

I do have another gripe which has been mentioned elsewhere on here and it's the paintwork. I don't know about you but my bonnet is peppered with stone chips after just 15k miles and just about a year. It is right down to the primer and it just strikes me that the paint must be thin or lacking in quality as I've never had it this bad on any car before. For example I covered over 100k in a 3 series and it had plenty of chips but they didn't look as bad as these. -

I've experienced sat nav's that definitely have the odd fault, in particular when abroad hence the observation. -

Hi Jambo, the bars are Thule 761 with 757 foot pack and the box is Thule Atlantis 900, which is an old model but max size of 650 litres. Didn't see the point of aero bars with a coffin on top! -
Octavia Cabin/Road Noise
Jollyroger replied to bhoywonder's topic in Skoda Octavia Mk III (2013 - 2020)
I think the road noise is on the harsh side, this being confirmed today after returning from hols in Italy where I had a Peugeot 308 estate for 2 weeks and it was much quieter. Not only the general road noise but also the HDi engine was far quieter on start up and when warm in comparison to the VRS diesel which does sound like a bag of spanners when cold. Saying that I was very pleased to be back in the VRS and it is a far superior car to the Pug and based on other people's comments it sounds like switching away from the Bridgestones will help which I will do when they wear out. -
We have 2 seats using the isofix points on each side and have squeezed in an additional booster on a few occasions in the middle but it was quite a compact one. The tricky part is getting the seat belts in as it is a bit of a squeeze but once their in it's ok.

2014 Octavia VRS, Air Con Smell
Jollyroger replied to kylelcfc's topic in Skoda Octavia Mk III (2013 - 2020)
I had this problem in a previous car, the air con deodoriser can thingy works quite well, pick on eup from Halfords or somewhere similar, probably amazon or ebay. -
Now that I'm 10,000 miles and 7 months in to ownership of my first Skoda I thought it was time for reflection and opinion. Coming back from my first holiday in the car, fully loaded with young family and camping gear seemed a good time to write this. Overall, as an all-round package, the car is really hard to criticise. Yes there are niggles, that I've mentioned in other posts, but as a great all round family car, for someone who wants to drive something well equipped, and reasonably sporty it just ticks so many boxes. The sheer space and ability to swallow all of my vast camping gear, with help of roofbox, is so much better than my previous 3 and 5 series BMW's. The seats are superbly comfortable, no problem for 6 hour run from home to just outside Paris in one go. I love the way the lights set themselves for driving on the right, what a great feature. Because of the roof box I needed to alter the opening angle of the electronic boot, no problem, really easy. The Columbus sat nav was faultless, even in France, always spot on with directions and sign recognition. My only frustration with Columbus is touch screen, I really don’t think touch screen and cars works as well as i-Drive type rotary controllers. Bumps and trying to plant your finger on a screen just dont go well together. I think this is just the whole ipad/touch screen world we live in, great on phones and tablets but not on cars IMO. I also had my first service just before going on hols, great experience with my local dealer in Northampton, no issues at all. It's also a car that seems to gain respect once people take a closer look, I was ostracised by many when I went for a Skoda, but when they had a look or go in it they were all eating their words and totally impressed with the car. It is still a head over heart purchase, no doubt about that but totally right for me with my current needs. I'm averaging around 42-44mpg which is made up of very mixed driving of short and long journey's. Mind you that took a hammering with the roofbox and stacked boot, went down to 34mpg! Its still good for what it is and the DSG gearbox. So for anyone reading this who is considering a VRS, and was in the same boat as me (previous VW's Audi's and BMW's), don't think too long about it, just do it.

Another Variable Service Interval Question
Jollyroger replied to Steve vRS's topic in Skoda Octavia Mk III (2013 - 2020)
Mine recently went in for its first service at 9.5k which surprised me as I thought it was on variable. In fact when I phoned the lease company to book it in they said that seemed too soon for an oil change on variable. No comment from the dealer though, just serviced and got it back. -

Pic taken on Saturday as we departed campsite in France. Car not lowered but very heavy laden with camping kit and full roofbox! -

You don't need to go into settings to go back to auto, just touch the icon again and it returns to auto, or sometime a second touch does it. -

Tenner on eBay for VW ones, just got some for SWMBO's Golf for same problem. -

Water spilling out of the doors after a downpour is really annoying. Schoolboy error design fault. Small fuel tank/range versus previous 320d and 520d beemers. Road noise and overly harsh ride which easily could have been engineered out. Cannot mute the sat nav, only turn the sound down when she speaks - why no simple mute option? Remote boot opening not being able to close as well and that beeping noise (appreciate this can be sorted via VCDS) Apart from that is is a very good all-rounder that suits my needs - performance, looks, economy, space for family, comfort, kit. -
Refilling oil... because she asked.
Jollyroger replied to Diango's topic in Skoda Octavia Mk III (2013 - 2020)
After reading this topic I checked mine today, for only the second time since new, and it was at halfway mark on the dipstick. Have done 7.5k miles so reckon that is pretty good for a new engine knowing that they do drink a bit more when new. Didn't see a problem with the dipstick though, read it fine, but would say very flimsy trying to get it back in. Luckily I had half a litre left from my previous car of the correct grade so job done, hopefully for another few thousand miles at least. -

Better not let my son see this, it's his favourite colour and he'd question why I didn't get it! Brave choice and hat off to you for going for it, looks good. -
Car long term test on VRS
Jollyroger replied to Jollyroger's topic in Skoda Octavia Mk III (2013 - 2020)
If you drove a 3 series M-sport back to back with a VRS you'd know exactly where I'm coming from. It not just about firm suspension, it's about how the ride is calibrated to deal with the lumps and bumps on UK roads. -
As always Car are spot on with their reviews. Having a virtually identical spec car I can relate to the pro's and con's after 6k miles. Thankfully the pro's massively outweigh the cons which for me, the big one being the ride. A few long trips on the M1 and M6 in the last couple of weeks confirms the ride just never really settles which I have no doubt it will do when I get on the autoroutes in May for hols. Frustrating as I've really grown to love everything else about it pretty much. http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/long-term-tests/skoda/skoda-octavia-vrs-estate-diesel-2014-long-term-test-review/

VRS owners comments please.
Jollyroger replied to Dirtydogg's topic in Skoda Octavia Mk III (2013 - 2020)
I'm averaging around the 42mpg mark after 5,000 miles. Lots of mixed driving of short runs of 6 miles and then some longer back roads and motorways doing around 120 miles. My driving style also heavily varies depending on mood and if it's a decent back road!
