  1. I'm going to be needing a bigger car soon as my wife and I have a third baby coming and I'm trying to decide if there may be some good deals about as a result of the lockdown and economic slowdown. Crystal ball gazing, as no one knows how long this will be restricting normal life but what do people think? Maybe some good deals on new in the next few months but drying up as production stops? Maybe some good deals on 2-3 year old cars coming to the end of PCP deals over the next 3 to 12 months? If things go on longer then maybe a continued ability to squeeze a deal/dealers working harder, but with less stock once factory closures impact the stunning deals dry up? ( If there are any stunning deals that is). Probably looking at a pug 5008 or if I saw something truly amazing deal wise, an Audi Q7 or land rover Discovery..... Welcome to my world of 7 seater blandness and desperately seeking to avoid an s-max/MPV.
  2. Sorry, I meant oil temp, I was (am) guessing with no water cooling the turbo the oil temp might be somewhat higher.
  3. did you notice any change in engine temperature with the check valve closed? I've a 2014 tsi vrs which slowly slowly, year on year the normal engine running temp has been climbing. It was ~102/103C oil temp when new and now its usually ~108C. I wonder if my check valve is getting more and more sticky? I also thought the cabin wasn't as warm as it should be a couple of times recently, not completely cold, but didn't comfy until I dialed in a temp a degree or more warmer than normal....I put it down to just getting old! Now I'm thinking it might be worth changing the check valve. what is the cost of the part please?
  4. Oh and yes Alex, I agree. We intended to keep #1 and #2 rear facing while they had leg room, I thought about 2, but they both became vomitersa at16-18 months and were instantly improved by turning to face forwards. If the forward view from the back of the vrs wasn't so bad I suspect that would have ended all vomiting.
  5. There's definitely going to be compromises made on safety... But with 3 I'll have scope for some acceptable loss, right? 😂 Seriously though, since we don't actually do many miles a year, and even less as a whole family..... And I suspect that will definitely be the case initially when #3 arrives, wife and I are content to use older style seats that may have less protection, so long as legal. Scot, yes but there's another bit I think about traveling in the front if there is space for a car seat. I did check the other day and although I could read a bit in two ways, I determined no car seat wasn't legal for planned journeys.
  6. I get what you're saying Alex and I agree. #1 is currently in a maxi Cosi rodi high backed booster, a really old one we scrounged up from my brother and SIL when my nephew grew out of it. It is definitely easy to reach over/climb over to get to the middle and strap someone in there. However I was surprised to find it's wider than the Joie ianchor thing. I'm definitely hoping to do as you say though and that George seat would be good, I'd (wrongly) assumed any group 1/2/3 seats would be bulkier so thanks for that find! MIL works in Asda too so might be able to save a chunk, not that they are costly. Wife also has an i10, so current Joie and maxi Cosi in the rear of that for 1 and 2, 3 in the front with strapped in gemm (or clipped in the base in the back, #1 in the front). Then in the Octy hopefully 2 of those from George either side of the gemm in the middle.... And when#3 outgrows the gemm it's...hmmm....if they are small it could be late enough to go forward facing and into another George but there's probably going to be 3-6 months where they will need to face backwards (15 months I think is allowed to face forward, need to check).....so hopefully I can squeeze 2 George beside the based up ianchor to one side.... Or I'll need another seat for a while. I'm going to have to get the current seats out, and a tape measure, and see how far off things are. Already checked the wheel arch bulge to wheel arch bulge as 118 cm, and arm rest to arm rest as 128cm, so it really comes down to shape and where the wide bits are.
  7. Yes I'm not wedded to using the iso fix bases and using the belts to secure gives a bit of sideways wiggle room to help everything fit. The youngest will be in the carrycot type seat (Joie gemm) and probably strapped directly in rather than on the iso base, if he/she is in the front that is the only option. #2 in the group 1 seat however does need the base as although the base can be strapped in the group 1 seat must attach to the base, but that likely isn't really an issue as the seat is the wide bit. I think things may fit, but it might be a real faff to get the kids in and belted up, but if we can live with it for a year then once #2 moves to the group 2/3 seat it should get easier....I hope.
  8. cheers. Now I know a width dimension is not everything, shape is, but those are quoted as 42cm wide (and 38 deep...think its that way around). I've just found a simple halfords seat at 41cm..and at 27 quid its cheap enough to risk trying https://www.halfords.com/kids-zone/car-seats/child-car-seats/halfords-essentials-high-back-booster-seat I may be off to halfords in Brixton to see if I can convince the shop assistant to let me try 2. Wife in the boot for about 14 months until #2 reaches 4 yo and then 2 of those would seem viable. I'll let her out to pee and feed her of course
  9. 🤣 I would, but the wife would kill me! ah, someone else mentioned the volvo seats, cheers, I'll take a look.
  10. yeah I know....someone will suggest a multimac but most will suggest a kodiak or a n other 7 seater, but...well ...someone must have done it! I've had the wife in the back seat between 2 large isofix group 1 car seats for a fairly long journey and she is willing to do that so littl'un #3 can go in the front but I'm interested to know if people have got 3 kids in the back and how. when #3 arrives in the summer #1 will be almost 5 and #2 almost 3, so currently in a highback booster seat and an isofix group 1 seat, but it would only be 8 months or so before #2 would be 3.5 and can also go in a high backed booster. From a read of the regs it seems legal to use simple boosters without a back too, less safe but legal and an option perhaps for the eldest if it means squeezing in next to #1 in the isofix group 1 and #12 in a high back booster is possible. Oh and the group 1 seats we have, Joie ianchor, can fix in with the sat belts instead of the isofix, so shuffling it over half and inch or so is probably possible. So, any way to do it? Oh and currently we are a very low mileage car using family, hence why we are thinking we are prepared to put up with a bit of faff and less comfort instead of the expense of a car swap, that may change of course.
  11. Has anybody tried or heard of this? its popped up on my facebook a fewtimes. I know ceramic coatings are the dogs danglies but expect them to be costly, and need meticulous application technique and the best/effective ones have lmited supply to agents. So £16 a bottle? A large car may need 2 bottles from comments on the facebook ad, but still Its tempting https://9hnano.co/product/9h-super-ceramic-car-coating-w2-gbp?fbclid=IwAR3fxMMq2A5gSDR4HVnk9RrUyD0JlqwVEXTHcpjbivucjtXhMglmEcbL4jo I do have lots of autoglym egp, lots of pourboys wax, and litres of bsd...so i really really don't need it. So i'm hoping you'll tell me it isn't that great....sort of!
  12. a link? no. it wouldn't work anyway, this topic is 2 and a half years old. Have a search on Tyre leader and a few of the other wheel and tyre websites and you'll find the right size rims fairly cheaply....£55-£60 upwards. Or these days you may find a scuffed gemini on ebay for not much more which you may prefer.
  13. I don't use wheel cleaner, even muc-off can be nasty to some stuff. the rims have a ceramic sealant and this gets topped up with a squirt of sonax bsd from time to time. usual monthly wash when I do the car is just with the car shampoo, and old wash mitt and the brushes to get to the back of the rims and the caliper. the wheels get a clean, and de-iron when swapped (summer/winter) but are never heavily soiled. when swapping the backs will get a squirt/wipe with sonax too so dirt really does n't stick. No need for aggressive wheel cleaners if the wheels are kept clean regularly.
  14. my rims have a ceramic sealant on them but calipers just get a wash with an old tooth brush and washing up brush as part of the (roughly monthly) car wash. fine after 3 years here also.
  15. yes i find the farecla g3 mitt fabulous, and also just use extra soapy water. I put a wash mitt on one hand and the clay on the other, swish swish the wash mitt on the car to soap it up, swish swish the clay, repeat. very easy.
  16. So could it have been just a lack of lube? i work with super soapy water in a bucket, wash mitt on one hand and clay mitt on the other. dip both, wipe wipe the wash mitt, wipe wipe the clay and move on. re dip into the water regularly and occasionally wipe the clay on the mesh side of the wash mitt. in my rush i might have gone too far with a clay mitt wipe perhaps and hit an inch or 2 of dry paintwork? possible perhaps.
  17. The plastic plug on the tsi is fine. its impossible to misthread, it goes in with only about 3/4 of a turn and snaps/clicks into position securely. a 2 pence coin makes the perfect tool to remove and refit.
  18. Thank you Ste, and all the others that have 'liked' my post, its great to get recognition/compliments from you guys. I've learnt a lot here from you lot and it meant i felt very confident i knew what to do even though i'd not done it before. I didn't enjoy it at the time but then i was fuming. i was livid the plasterer had been so careless to mix up plaster close to my car and leave it utterly covered in something so potentially damaging to the paint. However once done I was very pleased with the finish and satisfied to finally get my DA out, perhaps the push of necessity did me some good. product wise Used before and happy with: - wool mitt (although annoyingly i can't remember which it is...its grey if that helps) - Iron x - farecla clay mitt - sainsbury basics tea bags - auto glym tar remover, although I'm sure there are better products, and i know where to ask for suggestions as the bottle run low now - sonax bsd - Auto Glym Extra Gloss Protection. I continue to be happy with this, easy to apply so long as you can garage the car to keep it dust free for the hour MINIMUM it takes to haze. It seems to have good durability and its pretty cheap. However again, I know where to ask for suggestions on alternatives as the couple of bottles in the detailing cupboard run dry. -Auto glym micro fibre towels. Not used before and a bit ...mleh - auto finesse citrus power. It didn't shift some of the oilier marks that I'd thought it might, depsite a 5 minute dwell and using loads...third of a bottle. however it did shift off the plaster dust well, and that had set on thanks to a light rain shower, so it wasn't useless. IIRC I did ask about TFR on here but then ignored the suggestions . I bought citrus power as i was ordering a bottle of dressle and just tagged the citrus on to the order. In future I think I'd try a different TFR, or maybe a snow foam as the Nilfisk came with a snow foam bottle/attachment not used before and impressed by - The nilfisk compact, for not much more than £60 it seems fine. small and light and simple to use. may not be the most powerful but i don't want it to be, I don't want to damage things if i'm careless! the compact doe the job. - challenge extreme DA. light enough and easy to use, gets a good finish in my view. maybe it doesn't have the oomph to do heavy restoration, but I don't have the experience to do that either. I liked the nice slow start up feature, the short lead is manageable but not ideal, that's a minor weak point though. - dodo juice black finishing pad. not much to say - it worked. - Auto finesse Trippl3. I'm impressed! This was a freeby in my order with the citrus and the dressle but I'd buy this again. at almost 3 the car had a few swirls building, not loads but they were visible easily enough. currently they are gone, or reduced and hidden. it was so easy to use and being such a light polish i'd be confident to use it several times a year if I wanted to. as you can see from the photos, it left a good shiny coat of canuba wax. I'll buy this again! Most pleasing with the experience was learning i could do all this in not much more than half a day. If in a real rush i could have left off the AG EGP and been done in under 4 hours including the time to get tools out and put them away. This means I'm more likely to do it again. Although I am happy to break things down when really time poor, and do half or a third of the car for example. Oh and one odd thing that happened that i still don't understand, when clay mitting at one point I got a long (2 inch) black smear appear on the car. instant thought was I'd rubbed too hard and done damage but then realised the smear was the black rubbery stuff off the mitt had stuck to the paint. the mitt wouldn't remove it but the tar remover wiped it off instantly so i guess something tar-ry was on the car still? what would i do differently? start with a less filthy car. take a tiny bit more time with the microfibre towel wipes to clean the panel gaps, and to finish with dressle to clean any plastic and rubber and remove any white marks. Oh and of course....take more photos as i go to post a more thorough thread
  19. 11. EGP buffed with a clean black finishing pad (its a dodo juice) and speed 4 of 6, tried 6 but 4 seemed better. then a wipe with a micro fibre 12. Sonax BSD took 4.30 all in, not counting the lunch break. its much better than it was and it needed its spring detail anyway, now its done. the rush job shows with some excess polish and 'dust' in a few panel gaps still, some white scuffs on plastic and a few smears elsewhere. Overall though the Tripl3 has done a good swirl removal/filling job! I like. I alos have a bit more confidence and in the future might take my cutting pad and my heavier polish to the car to tackle the random deeper scratches that are slowly mounting after almost 3 years. They seem far more obvious right now, as do the paint chips. Its not up to you guys standards, but its looking pretty smart for its age I think
  20. After an incident that left my car covered in plaster and cement dust, and blobs of plaster, A full detail was needed. I am time poor so it had to be quick and hence hasn't been thorough but 1. Presure wash. First go with my nilfisk compact and my auto finesse citrus power. presure washer worked great, but a bit disappointed the citrus power didn't shift more. I let it dwell 5 minutes on a wet car and a lot of road grime and some blobby sticky stuff (no idea what it was - possibly a bird poo it picked up yesterday) remained untouched. it did shift a lot of the plaster abrasive dust off though, thankfully. 2.hand wash, 2BM, wool mitt. 3. Iron-x (applied to front half of car before the back half washed, so 'half a car wash' dwell time) 4. Agitate with mitt nd shampoo 5. pressure wash rinse 6. auto glym tar remover 7. cuppa while it air dried 8. auto finesse trippl3 polish. applied by DA using a finishing foam pad..err a black one...hex logic possibly...I'll have to check. used my Argos extreme DA for the first time and a smaller back plate I'd bought. Bit nervous doing this for the first time but a light polish and a light pad and needs must... it went ok. Polisher cold do with a longer lead, I had to put the extension real in the car on the seat in order to reach the roof. primed pad with sonax bsd, 4 small blobs of tripl3 on pad, blob on to car over a half a panel, wipe about, then turn on at setting 1 or 2 to spread, up the speed to 4 (of 6) and do a crisscross of overlapping passes. Then REMEMBER to turn off the DA and let it stop BEFORE pulling it off the panel...or else polish flings everywhere...oops. work a panel and a half and then go back and wipe/buff by hand microfibre. work around car. 9. 3 hours 45 after start 10. it seems to me that Tripl3 sits in auto finesse's range where SRP sits for autoglym, and both will take a sealnt over. So a quick wipe of autoglym Extra resin polish and the car was garaged to keep it dust free while it hazed. I've just had lunch and will now go and buff. And maybe a wipe of sonax if my little girl naps long enough. I'm happy with the shine for a rushed and first full detail! I know i've missed bits trying not to hit plastic/rubber, and i know i still hit it so I'll have some white marks to deal with but that can wait.
  21. Vrs tsi here, gentle driving around town and start stop on, 103-110C usual for me. Slightly cooler at 70-80 on the motorway, 103-105C.
  22. Hmm, stock mine, and I assume all, spin wheels in 3rd on dusty or slightly damp surfaces as the turbo hits full boost. Nice warm day, good tread, and a lovely clean, dry and flat surface and it grips in second but how often do we find that?
  23. I thought it was all cars and i thought it was the car acting as a Helmholtz resonator https://people.seas.harvard.edu/~jones/cscie129/nu_lectures/lecture3 /ho_helmholtz/ho_helmholtz.html its the same effect as blowing over a bottle opening and getting a note. I find opem a second window and it stops, although i usually just use the air conditioning.
