  1. Those Haynes manuals try to cover about a dozen different cars in one. It's hard to sometimes follow them for your particular engine etc.
  2. Has the car been in an accident? Any signs of accident damage? Sometimes looms and wiring can be messed with during repairs. I'm suprised there is so many issues with the car.
  3. M10 spline for driveshafts cups 32 mm socket hub nut can't think of anything more than that. got mine out with the driveshafts on the hubs end. It required a lot of wiggling. I'd advise Pull hubs off, undo ball joints and take off the left wishbone and it will save a lot of time and will practically drop straight out then easy. You say 2 hours, but there is a fair amount of faffage to get everything clear for you to work on it. I'd say 4 if your on axle stands
  4. Sounds like worn dog bone or gear linkages. I would think if it mechanically works stationary what could be causing it? Have you checked the lower tranmission to subframe mount? They can wear on torquey DERF Burners. I would say change the box oil if you fancied, It's advisable to do that kind of stuff yourself so you know it's done right. But I can't imagine the oil effecting it
  5. I keep getting an annoying rattle on roads which vibrate the car, it sounds like it is coming from behind the dash to the right of the steering wheel. Has anyone had this? Wtf is it?
  6. Yeah I mean it's up to you, air holes is a good idea!
  7. Yeah its a straight swap. Don't think it will make much difference to the sound, diesel ones can get them with foam sound insulation on too minimise noise. Mine doesn't have the foam on but extends back the length of the subframe. You could say where does the air exit on the diesel variants? there are loads of places for it to exit around the bay. The 1.8s are cast iron, I'd guess heat dissipation is very similar, do they actually run hotter than diesels, they'd heat up quicker for sure but mines usually around 90 when I'm caning it, I'd say that's pretty cool.
  8. Air flow is the through the front grill right
  9. Pretty sure tray for diesel is for sound insulation. I put a tray on mine and oil temperature has been exactly the same. Has added protection against winter dirt and crap on the roads.
  10. 5 speeds are preferred for drag strip, it's just what you want. I've heard the six speeds are stronger boxes but that the fives are better for acceleration on the dragstrips/street. I think 5s are cheaper too 02a 02j. I wonder why they did 6s in cupra rs and only 5s in vrs's.
  11. Can always disc cut the top of the ball joint taper bolt off. I found putting the new ball joint in you have to get that Allen key in so just popped the hub nut and pull the hub out to get at it easy

  13. I put the ecs clutch in a few months back. After 4000 miles it's been faultless and amazingly soft and smooth. Softer than my dad's 2014 octavia clutch. Which size flywheel did you choose? You get everything for the clutch itself in the kit, all bolts and the release bearing. The only part you could possibly need I guess is some new gearbox oil if you fancied changing that, easy with the gear box out. I guess you could change the crank seal which is behind the flywheel, but it'll most likely be fine. I thought the release bearing awesome gti supplied was a bit plastic compared to the standard all metal one. But hey ho.
  14. My clutch went at 85000 I replaced it with an ecs stage 1 flywheel sachs vr6 clutch. It's been awesome for 4000 miles. My mechanic quoted me 120 to fit, so 140 is pretty good, as it is a time consuming job to get the box out. You could do the change yourself =-)
  15. just thinking could be gearbox, assuming its not the gear box then fitting a clutch and checking the linkage over, dont suppose it could have something to do with the clutch slave cylinder
  16. something was deffo wrong with yoir clutch then. it will be good to replace it. possibly the diagraphm spring had something to do with clicking/rubbing
  17. Where can i actually get one?!! cheers dave
  18. that lever with wear should be fine when u put new clutch in. check that the lever pivotsokay on the ball pivot. i reckon your gear mis selection could be worn bushes on yourlinkage. check out the spring/lever mechanism witht the little whitebushesand check for wear
  19. dual mass flywheel or just because the clutch is so much lighter i finally have good control.
  20. I had a look around on the web. and i decided on the ecs stage one g60 vr6 clutch kit, which i bought from awesome gti for 330 pounds. you get the option of a lighter wheel but i chose the 'silent' heavier wheel. it comes with an alignment tool to align the friction plate too. I believe that you get what you pay for, i looked at darkside developments and techniclutch but got mixed reviews but the ecs kit had good reviews. so i thought i might as well pay a little more. it also stated in the description the flywheel was quiet unlike darkside developments who said their flywheels might rattle at idle-i thought thats just a dodgy get out clause! After i fitted it, the clutch felt ridiculasly light which took a day or so to get used to. but its great and was easy to install and makes no noise whatsoever. after 300 miles its rock solid and is easier to get a smooth gear change with for some reason, possibly due to play in the old dual
