  1. RAC has been amazing. Hire car as soon as they could get one (BMW Gran Tourer 218) with Isofix points for our daughter's car seat. They've finally managed to find a garage that can do the work, although the guy said he'd never had to do it before, so fingers crossed he doesn't have half a dozen bits left over at the end. He ordered the part through the Skoda garage we had taken it to for diagnostics; they couldn't do the work for another fortnight and, well, lovely as it is to still be in France, we do need to go home at some stage. So hurrah for lovely friends for putting us up for a week, for the RAC European assistance, for the Skoda garage in Hérouville Saint Clair near Caen and to my OH for parenting the entire week seeing as he doesn't speak French! Apparently, the bill shouldn't be more than 2,000€, but I don't believe that, given the way the guy was talking. It's going to cost us a fortune. And we couldn't even vote. *cries*
  2. Have been onto the garage and it is the 'déphaseur d'arbre à cames' which translates as 'cam shaft shifter', whatever one of those is when it's at home. Any ideas? Does this make more sense?
  3. Hi all, Here's a small bit of background info, just so you understand my issue. I'm on holiday in france in my 2010 Superb estate, then the engine light comes on and the manual tells me i have an exhaust issue. After a little hiccup i get the car looked at by a Skoda garage and they tell me that it's the (in french) dephaseur. I'm fluent in french but not fluent in car, but I understood that this is part of the distribution system from what was explained to me by the mechanic. I am weighing up my options and it would really help me to know what sort of costs I'd expect to pay for work on the distribution system at a Skoda garage in the UK. I understand that there will not be an exact cost, but Minimum and maximum costs would really help. Also, if anyone knows French, and knows that I am wrong thinking that the dephasuer is part of the distribution system, please shout. Thank you all so much in advance.

  5. It's not hitting anything and we've tried multiple times so the car isn't rocking or being moved by the wind. It seems to happen more when the sun is out. So, I guess that seeing as we had summer on Saturday, I don't need to worry until next year ;-) It's annoying, though. Skoda said they couldn't look for a fault unless there was a fault and at the time I took it in, it was working...
  6. Title pretty much says it all. A few weeks ago, the boot lid opened remotely, but then on pressing the button to close it, it moved a few millimetres and then stopped, with a warning beep. It would close manually and open but still wouldn't close. A couple of days later it worked fine again. It coincided with our first warning light requesting more engine oil. Skoda garage told me there is a 1 litre per 1000 miles tolerance, so having done nigh on 3000 miles, that was about right. Never known a car to need so much oil! Anyway, after topping up with oil, the boot worked fine. Apparently, this is a coincidence, as the engine oil has nothing to do with the hydraulics of the boot. Fair enough. But the boot has started playing up again. It appears to have coincided with the two spells of warm weather that we have had. Anyone had any experience of the boot having trouble closing? And do all cars of this model need so much oil? Thanks, as always, for any advice :-)
  7. Apparently the setup menu now gives us unit details. But did the bf write them down? Short answer, no. And quite frankly, in this weather, I'm not going out there to find out yet! Will have a look tomorrow :-) Will try to get to the PO before the weekend. Thanks again.
  8. Turns out the bf has worked out how to connect phones via bluetooth and that's working fine. Hurrah. Next question - which one of you is popping round to wash the car? :-D
  9. So, we now have version 4020 - yay! Thanks, KBPhoto :-) V8 maps installed. 7 digit postcodes. Result. Thanks very much, everyone who contributed to resolving this. Keep your eyes peeled for my next post - Bluetooth for Dummies* Anyone got any later discs to update to more recent versions, perchance...?! *pushes her luck* *not kidding!!
  10. If we install 4020 is there any risk? I understand from the rns site that installing 4120 may damage the radio board if it is an older unit. Will 4020 install the hidden menu which will then allow me to see which unit it is without having to take it out? Do you know which I may need: 4020 for RNS510 or 4020 for HDD ratios 60/35/5? Also, any idea how big the file is to d/l? We live in the back end of beyond, our internet speed is laugable and I'm using my iPad so can't tell. Ta, muchly :-)
  11. We only bought the car on Tuesday so haven't put any music or POIs on yet anyway. Probably unlikely to. Radio text is no big loss - you don't miss what you've never had... So, we need to update the firmware. How exactly do I go about that? I did say this would need to be Columbus for Dummies...!
  12. Well, for the time being, I can tell you that it only has 5 digit postcode searching, which resulted in us ending up down a cul de sac rather than outside the Skoda dealership when we went to pick up a disc with a more current version of the maps! (FOC, albeit v9, and we didn't even buy the car from them)
  13. Thanks for the replies, guys. Pressing setup just gives me FM/AM. A dealer is kindly lending us a map update disc, but obviously we're going to have to update the firmware first. What next? :-)
  14. Now, I know this has been covered in a hundred and one previous threads, but having read most of them, they all seem to fall into techspk very quickly and I got lost. So, for the sake of one new Superb owner without a clue, could someone please explain in simple terms how I can go about updating the Columbus sat nav? - How do I find out which version (firmware/maps?) I currently have? (And if the answer is 'VCDS' can you please tell me what that is and how I can access it?!) - How do I update the firmware to the latest / a more current version? - How do I update the maps to the latest / a more current version? - Would it just be easier to use my TomTom with Live traffic services???! Thanks for your patience and for any information that might help! :-)
  15. If only my questions about the satnav could be answered that simply...
