I had a similar problem not electrical as the solenoid could be heard working. I took the bottom part of the boot lock mechanism out and had to bend the part that pulls on the latch so it doesn't have to move so far to operate the latch. No problems since, cheap fix, easy to do. This assumes you don't have the cable operated latch from a handle to the side of the drivers seat.

ok the day before the failure i stop started the car while in a queue of very slow moving traffic about 5/6 times (i wouldn't normally do this but it was a very hot day i had the a/c cranked up plus my coolant light came on (needed a top up) so i was worrying about overheating. I dont know if this caused or contributed to the battery death & subsequent ignition switch failure (because otherwise there would be a higher demand for ignition switches...). All i can say is it is a PITA but at least the car conveniently broke down on the drive at home. At first when appeared just a dead battery issue I bought a really crappy unbranded battery from kwik fit for a whopping £85 & it was only 40Ah, so glad i took it back for a refund (blagged them i hadnt fitted it) i've ordered a branded 62Ah battery online for £65 and that includes next day delivery...

Update - dead battery caused excess current through ignition switch, cost of switch £46 via Skoda dealer. My costs are auto electrician £45 call out, £80 labour so far (waiting for switch from dealer) plus approx £75 new battery.

Sorted. Ignition switch faulty. Switch £46. Auto electrician call out £45, upto £80 labour so far prior to fitting new switch (on back order from skoda) the dashboard is in pieces but hopefully will go back together nice and creaky. All caused by dead battery apparently causing excess current going through ignition switch..

Ok, 2007 1.4 16V fabia estate, unexplained flat battery upon trying to start, all dash lights on pre ignition as normal, recharged battery overnight, still no start (no crank no sign of life at solenoid), fitted new starter and battery, no change, solenoid lead wire physically intact (but unable to get any voltage reading when key in starter position) have currently removed battery and positive cable to starter from the positive bus bar (this cable is not shorted to earth) but, all large cables fixed to positive bus bar on plastic battery cover even when separately removed and tested for continuity to earth all reading connected to earth....? Im guessing these are alternator pas hrw etc...? Looking for ideas here please!

It was 3 days ago. I charged it overnight & it went dead again over the course of the next day. I can only get it charged upto about 10v which is no good to anyone. Guess the voltage is leaking away due to a shorted positive cable....

Luckily it has not caught fire yet! I have called out an auto electrician who will be looking at it Friday I'll update this thread on the outcome.

Nope. The battery is removed. I have even disconnected the other end from the plastic battery cover so I have both ends not connected to anything. Still gives continuity between the cable and engine block.

This is the one which seems to be grounded somewhere (this is before I fitted a new motor and cleaned up the corrosion BTW! )

There are two fat black leads one is to the motor mounting bolt (earth) which is securely connected, I have disconnected the other one which is definitely the positive to the battery. I get continuity between the disconnected positive cable & the engine block, so this cable must be shorted somewhere between starter and battery?

I have just removed positive fat black lead from starter (presume goes direct to battery) and done a continuity test between it and the engine block - there is a continuity signal. So my positive starter lead is earthed somewhere...?

PS also checked all fuses that potentially seemed relevant all ok Inc all on battery cover. Earth connections to body seem good...

I have a 2007 Fabia 1.4 16V. 3 days ago it would not start (no sign off life from either starter or solenoid) I have fitted new starter & battery, still nothing, lead into solenoid is not broken (have removed some insulation as far back as I can & checked continuity to plug end which there is). All dash lights come on I can hear fuel pump priming but no life at starter. I have put a multimeter to solenoid plug lead with key in start position and could not get any voltage signal. Any ideas...?

Yes I didn't mention after spending a day fitting the not new starter motor I STILL have nothing when I turn the key, no click from the solenoid or anything. Battery is fully charged. The lead you mention does not appear broken but with the key in the start position I put a multimeter probe into the plug on the end and got zero volts. So my next step I think is to cut into the plug itself and see if it is broken inside maybe...????

Obviously with little time to faff around I took it back to be told "it's the correct part it will fit have a good day" & the guy at the counter just walked out & closed the door behind him! So can I just warn anyone that ordering a brand new part and paying the extra at ECP clearly does not mean you will get it, & they are not bothered when you try & complain either!

Ok so recently the starter motor failed on my 2007 Fabia so with the car stuck on the drive and an ECP store 20 mins walk away I ordered a BRAND NEW Lucas motor (ie. not ECPs budget reconditioned motor offering) and paid the advertised price for the new lucas one of £136.99 less 35% with an online promo code which came to £89. So here are the pics of my order & the brand new lucas starter motor they kindly supplied...

hi if you are sure the code is definately correct then really there is nothing you can do (apart from buying another unit from a reputable seller). I have had the same problem in the past i still have a symphony unit with correct code but it wont accept it, but i wouldnt sell it to an unsuspecting buyer obviously!

I have same problem, symphony unit did not work at all (no power) since I bought the car about 6 weeks ago. I have just got the unit out today, bit of a struggle due to tight fit in the dash, & replaced the 10A fuse in the back. It now powers up but refuses to accept the code printed on the sticker in the manual, it is the correct code as the serial no. on the sticker matches the radio. You have to wait about an hour to try again, with power to the headunit. As far as mine is concerned, I presume headunit is just no good as it won't accept the correct code, so looking for a replacement.
