Long story short. I bought a 2002 Fabia 1.4 MPi for my 17 yr old son to help with college (vehicle engr). It was bought as a spares or repair as it was previously a donor car and has had the PAS pump removed, amongst other bits & bobs. I've done a search and found the PAS pump part no thread but my chassis no doesn't match up with the 3 types provided. The chassis no for ours is: TMBPB16Y723481085 Following the guide this leaves me with: 6Y-2-481-085 Any idea which PAS pump I need to be looking for? Even better if someone has one that I can purchase from you?

Changed starter motor today. No more whining after starting. Had a look at the rack. Replacement required.

Ok, just had this on the stands today. If it's leaking its coming from the gaiters. Drivers side at a guess as that's where the sub frame is wet the most. There's also a patch under it on the floor. So, on further investigation, the gaiter was loose so I stuck a new zip tie on. I've re-filled the reservoir and ran it up for about 10 mins turning the wheel left to right. No signs of any leaks as yet. I'm gonna leave it parked up for a week and see if it leaks again. In the meantime I'm gonna source a replacement rack. Removing the sub frame seams simple enough. No doubt it will be a bit fiddly from experience working on VAGs.

Steering rack?

Is it ok to drive? What is the worst that can happen. I have full workshop with a lift that I have access to at work, but it's 50 miles away. Else it'll be done on my drive on axle stands.

Most of my searches came up with that result. I'm expecting the worst tbh but I'm also curious to know how much of a job it is to change.

Oh, other than the excessive play in the track rod nothing else steering wise was picked up on the MOT.

Ok, I've done the search and I've not necessarily found the answers I'm looking for. The car is a 2003 VRS 1.8T and it's the wife's so I rarely drive it myself. The current rack Has been on since Jun 13 after a similar situation (based on the car's history). A replacement rack and pinion was fitted. History of the problem: Few months back, steering makes a whining noise, sounding electric, according to the wife. On checking the steering fluid it's low. Off to skoda I go and top up with some G005 fluid. Noise disappears. A month or so later and it's due an MOT. After a check, I notice it has dropped again so a I give it a quick top up for the MOT. It failed the MOT on too much play in a track rod. Track rod replaced. A few days later. Same whining noise as before. On checking the fluid, it's low again. Topped up. Next day, at her work, it drops its fluid all over the staff car park. She drives car home (1.5 miles tops - I know, how lazy!) and takes our spare car for work. Car has been sat in front of the garage for nearly a week now (I work away). Today: I've just been and had a quick look. Reservoir is more or less empty, bar a bit of fluid in the bottom. There are two oily patches under the sub frame, one each side under the sub frame below where the rack gaiters are, about 10cm in diameter. Obviously the subframe in these two areas is wet. I can't see anything obvious from the top. I will be jacking it up onto stands tomorrow to conduct further investigation. Questions: Where should I be looking? How easy is it to change the rack? How do I get the sub-frame off? Is there a guide? Cheers in advance Chris.

Bushes looked fine today. Mine isn't a Bosch one either. I think I'll probably bite the bullet and get a Bosch starter from ECP.

Tried to resolve the starter motor whine. Failed.

I've done the search, it's the same symptoms (starts, then makes a horrible high pitch whine after) and I've followed the guide to clean it up too. It's the wife's car and she reports that sometimes it won't screach. It does it more often than not though. I've stripped it down twice now, the latest was today and I stripped if a lot further than I did the first time (those bushes are a complete bitch to get back in!!). First strip I greased it up quite thoroughly, this time I did it lightly. Either way, it's no better. Having looked through the cars' history (we purchased last January) it had a new starter from ECP fitted about 18 months ago. It would have been just over a year old when it started getting noisy. Am I ****ing in the wind trying to resolve this and am I better off getting a replacement or is there something else I should try?

Washed, clayed and waxed with swissvax onyx. Cleaned the interior with Autosmart G101. Managed to get rid of the stains on the seats and carpets. They look 100% better than they did this morning. That G101 is feckin awesome. First time I've used it, only heard of it a week ago. Very highly recommended.

Top mounts changed. Further diagnostics has determined that the rack is the root of the problem. It creaks when turning the wheels. Fluid is still at the correct levels therefore I'm assuming something internal is starting to give up the ghost. Just need to find a cheap replacement rack now.

Top mounts and bearings changed. Relatively easy job. Old set weren't too bad, in fact they weren't the cause of my problem. Further investigation has identified that the rack is on it's way out. Still, the mounts are good for a while now.

Sorry for the delay. I ordered a set from a link in another thread via search. Another eurocarparts style website (gsf I think), nothing fancy. I want to confirm that they are the fault before splashing out on anything fancy. It's the wife's motor after all. I'm away from home atm, they should be there by now so I'll probably have a go at fitting them at the weekend.

Replacement bearings and mounts ordered.

Hi guys. I started a thread the other day thinking my steering rack or pump was knackered as my steering was creaking when turning the wheel. On further investigation it's quite obvious now that the rack and pump are fine and the creaking is something to do with the top mounts. This is the top mount with the car sat on the floor (ie now) And when I jack it up off the floor. Same for both sides. So, octavia gurus, what's happened here, how do I fix it and what do I need (if I need new parts)? Cheers in advance. Chris
