  1. Afternoon, With the summer drawing to a close and the nights drawing in my partner began to talk about swapping her Golf for something with 4x4 (we live at the top of a hill.) I had been making suggestions about finding something larger than her Golf. It had dawned on me that only four things in life are guaranteed – death, taxes, flat roofs will leak and the kids won’t get any smaller. We looked at Passats, A4s, A6s and XC70s (the last being my original preference.) The Volvo dealer didn’t follow up on my enquiry and in the meantime the boss had noticed that the Octavia and Superb offered 4x4 options. Wind forwards by a couple of weeks and the deal has been done – a new Superb 170CR L&K Estate 4x4 in black. I’ve been a VW Group customer on and off for a number of years. Quite unexpectedly I find myself in a similar position to Pete M, an existing member who pointed me in the direction of this board. The position which Pete and I share is running vehicles from what might be described as both ends of the VWG spectrum. In amongst his fleet he runs a 993 Turbo and a lovely white Octavia saloon. I’ve a 997.1 Carrera 2 S Cab and now it’s joined by the Superb. I was impressed by the fit and finish of the Superb. I think the handling is good for a big old barge yet it’s relaxed on the motorway. There is plenty of kit, matched only by the thoughtful innovations. For me this vehicle offers great value for money. There’s one other thing which we agree on - it’s classless. It is unaffected by the cut and thrust (and bluster) of the rivalry between Audi, BMW and Mercedes. I think that it looks at home in any situation but no-one would think that you just spent £60K on a car - which is what I reckon a similarly specc’d A6 would cost new. I think that it does “precisely what it says on the tin” – a bit like the Porsche. Anyway, I know from experience how helpful these boards can be; both the PCGB and boxa.net boards are great. I’m looking forwards to learning more here. Happy motoring!
