Regen only removes the soot but if there is too much ash the problem doesn't go away. You need the ash out!

There is a third option: DPF clean. And whatever you do do not have it removed. Sooner or later you will have ot pay for a new one as the MOT laws are tightening on that.

Anyone has ever suffered from throttle response or hesitation issues with these 1.6tdi engines, mainly at low rpm?

As with any maps as long as it is done properly no problems come to your engine. My concern is the over reliance on some tuners to use library maps (that's what a stage 1 is) instead of creating a bespoke map for the car and driver.
