  1. Vaison's post in iPad - Bolero bluetooth connection fades in and out was marked as the answer   
    In the unlikely event that anyone else is interested; I solved the problem by accident. While the iPod is connected to the Bolero head unit (via Bluetooth) I turned up the volume to full and have had no problems since.
