Oil cooling radiator
TheOctaviator replied to Nickj633's topic in Skoda Octavia Mk III (2013 - 2020)
I've never had to do it myself, but the air-hose at your local garage used to be the favoured method. -
Faulty Window Switch? Driver's controls
TheOctaviator replied to BionicJohn's topic in Skoda Octavia Mk III (2013 - 2020)
If the first MoT is due soon, isn't the car still in warranty? Get the dealer to fix it. -
Today we say a final 'goodbye' to Windsor Davies
TheOctaviator replied to Macdemon's topic in The Roadside Hotel
So glad I have the complete IAHHM series on DVD, as I'm fairly confident that the BBC won't dare broadcast repeats. Gone to the great charpoy in the sky - RIP, Sergeant Major. -
factory fitted tyres
TheOctaviator replied to BACUPIAN's topic in Skoda Octavia Mk III (2013 - 2020)
Totally agree. Cheap tyre + pothole (not an unusual occurrence, unfortunately) = potential blowout. I agree fully with maffyou's comments about slowing down in the wet, not driving up the exhaust of the vehicle in front etc, but you can't control what the other idiot does. It's your money and you must decide your own priorities, but I know where mine are. -
Today is a very sad day..........

Met Police ramming scooter criminals off the road

I meant routinely in its literal sense, e.g. as in France, USA etc. -
and those gravestones only represent the ones they found - how many more undiscovered?

Perhaps the moped muppets should stop giving the police cause to take this sort of action and think themselves lucky that our police aren't routinely armed. -
By your own admission, you hadn't bothered reading the post - the full names of the two artists are tagged and the context is in the very first sentence, so no, I don't think it is 'a bit of a stretch' and I still think you were rudely dismissive. When in a hole.......
-
Before I was rudely dismissive of someone's post, I would have taken the trouble to find out what they were referring to (e.g. your use of CBA - I looked it up) and read it properly. I'm not a pub quiz music whizz. If you CBA to read something, it wouldn't make any difference how many links I had or hadn't attached, would it?
-
Thank you, BJM (obviously not simply stupid). I CBA to respond to someone who CBA reading the original post with two tags, Paloma Faith - PF and Cass Elliot - CE. For the avoidance of doubt, I'm not being ironic, I genuinely admire your patience in posting a reply.
-
I've just watched the Paloma Faith video on the Skoda UK site. I know Miss Faith has many admirers on this site, but why did she have to maul one of my favourite songs? I suspect this will divide opinion along generational lines - I'm not saying PF can't sing, just that some songs should be left alone. The cover version, to my ears, is a nasal, electro rendition. The original has a purity of voice and a real orchestra backing it. Reminds me of discussions about real v artificially-generated exhaust sounds! Before any PF fans post, please listen (preferably several times) to CE's original, THEN shoot.

Better in the grille than in your rear-view mirror, methinks.

She's German, then?

Try John Lewis next time. They usually give a 3 year guarantee and no gip if you have a problem. I have no connection to JL other than being a satisfied customer over many years (they once gave me a refund on a pair of shoes I'd had for 18 months).

Think you can change a wheel .....
TheOctaviator replied to BoxerBoy's topic in Skoda Octavia Mk III (2013 - 2020)
I carry a piece of timber off-cut (probably from a floorboard) to put under the jack to spread the load and stop it sinking if you have to change a wheel on soft ground. -
Donald Trump famously tweeted " I would never say 'Try some frayed cable on your lights and watch the yobs glow in the dark when they touch it'. Other yob repellants are available.

Funny thing happens when cold outside
TheOctaviator replied to skippy41's topic in Skoda Octavia Mk III (2013 - 2020)
Have you tried cling film as an overnight frost shield on headlamps? I also prop the wiper blades away from the windscreen (champagne corks work a treat) to stop them freezing on. -
My George Best-a-like
TheOctaviator replied to themanwithnoaim's topic in Skoda Octavia Mk III (2013 - 2020)
You haven't got a leaky fuel tank, have you? George was well known for dribbling a lot. -
Even if you can't get the local authority to cough up, always report it, so they can't plead ignorance when it next happens - they have a reasonable period of time to act after they first become aware, so get the clock ticking.

When I retired, they taxed me as if I were to receive my lump sum every month (I wish) - getting a letter from HMRC saying you owe £9,000-odd arrears of income tax has a very laxative effect, even though (a) I knew it was wrong and (b) I was capable of composing a full reply, with detailed calculations (and no expletives), which I did and with which they agreed. They said they "assumed..", and, as Benny Hill famously said, when you assume, you make an ass out of u and me.
-
One of my friends had the same thing happen on his Mk2 vRS diesel. The push-it-and-see action is worse than useless, in my experience, when the VW Group have been selling cars with a decent rotary wheel adjustment since at least the Mk4 Golf/Bora (still got one, 17 years old and lumbar support still stays where you set it).

The trouble is, while we are having a (fairly) sensible debate about it, the people causing the problem are at it even as we debate. I still think my bonfire suggestion has some merit, apart from the air pollution it will cause (or is that another thread?).
