  1. 99 Octiwagen. 180k. New clutch 20k. Major service 155k. I did have issues with gear shifting a couple of years ago, and with a little guidance sorted it out. Thank you. I thought I had been a lax in changing up into 2nd, a bit of grinding but it went in and off I went. I discovered a short while later that I could not change down to second either. Today, neither 2nd nor 4th will engage, up or down. The push/pull adjustment makes no difference. Without the cable attached the gears will still not engage. Reverse, 1st, 3rd and 5th are fine but I do miss the others. I suspect bad news will follow.
  2. Sorted, sort of. It is a T20 but my aim was not good enough. Two minutes and it was out but a few more minutes revealed this broken part which was presumably stopping the lock from working. Everything else seems fine. Off to check if the repair kits include this part.
  3. I am having a similar issue except the screw is impossible to feel. At present I cannot use the drivers' door lock due to it suddenly rotating slightly and not allowing the key in properly. Haynes and 7zap says it is a hexagon socket whereas the link above says T20. I cannot feel that there is anything there anyway. I will be having another go tomorrow but the current situation does not bode well. 99 0ctiWagen
  4. Fixed in the carpark. Somehow the rotating part of the shift mechanism has come out of the guide. Quick fix would have been quicker without the promenade to and from.
  5. Things have been quiet on the Octavia gearshift front until a month ago when the clutch went, properly slipping smoke and nothing else. I had it done by a garage, £500 which I felt was reasonable. £300 for the dual mass flywheel and clutch and a day to do it. This morning however, a mile or so to drop Dearly Beloved at work and no gears again. None, just a stirring motion at the lever. Since I have not repacked my tools, I walked back home, and have to walk back to it in the hope that the shift tower bolt has come undone. I mentioned it to the garage and he made sure it was done up well. That nut is the only thing I can think of, but any further input would be appreciated.
  6. Top chap and still with a sense of humour until the end. ...brace of spades..... :D
  7. Two separate issues. The brushes I was given for my hot-air welder were obviously two different grades/compositions, and they were in packets with two different part numbers. After pointing this out he said 'Interesting'. The welder worked for half an hour and died. £400 ish. Three big boxes about 4' x 3' x3'. the top flange is 2" on three sides and 1 1/2 on the fourth. All cut, matches the drawing the CNC monkey has. 'Oh, just use them, they are just prototypes' He cannot draw three rectangles and get them aligned correctly. The lids for these boxes need two holes for locks and two Vs to act as hinges. The holes are machined and end up half covered by the upper flange, so rework is required, which is not going to be enough as I realised this afternoon. The Vs were too close together making tacking and welding more difficult than it should have been. FFS he is a 'director' Lazy, apathetic and incompetent just about sums him up. I need another job.
  8. Probably fixed the intermittent near-side brake light and swapped the 'optional silver internally coated' W5W side light bulbs for the more usual clear ones. Much better.
  9. Coincidentally, I came across these last night. Plenty of variety too. http://heavycherry.com/makervehicle/skoda/index.html They all seem to have four doors though.
  10. Welcome madmaxx. I just sorted the same 1st/2nd problem on my 99 Octavia. http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/378259-99-octavia-gearshift/ English may not be your first language but it considerably better than my Swedish, no need for apologies.
  11. Thank you for all the, helpful comments and suggestions, @jublybug Only ten days and everything is done bar a tiny bit of adjusting. 1st, 2nd and reverse are a little notchy but all gears are present and correct. I had not realised that there was a flat on the tower shaft and selector arm. Had I realised I could have centre-popped the life out of the arm and fitted the new one at my leisure. As it turned out my new arm arrived this morning before 10.00am and was effectively done in half an hour. I did centre-pop the flat so I could see it and it did give a bit more resistance on assembly.
  12. https://youtu.be/S9wTR488Vus No wonder it was imprecise.
  13. Culprit found.....possibly. This would explain the excess movement I felt. Now the matter of fixing it rears its' ugly head. Hopefully this does not bring a further issue to the fore.

  15. Rain, wind and darkness, not Earth, Wind and Fire. Tomorrow for a proper wiggle, and if I can do it with one hand on a camera, all the better.
  16. My new part turned up a day earlier than expected, double-edged sword, being early but no-one in to sign for it. The difference is night and day, BUT no difference to the shift at all. On the drive with the engine running I could get the gears after a bit of readjustment, and was able to move off in each. Into 1st, off the drive and into.......nothing, just a stirring, bendy hole and a false neutral. A bit more stirring and into 3rd. Changing down to 2nd produced the same bendy hole. I am now officially lost. I need to know what next, being the first car I have had to work on, I am almost blind, almost but not inept. ?Could it be the splines on the tower? I can move the horizontal selector arm easily beyond the stops I thought would restrict the movement. I will do a video on Thursday with commentary.
  17. Thank you for the response and link. I spent a lot of Thursday and Friday trawling the net and here for answers, and got nowhere in particular. Although yours is the later shifter, I suppose the fault could be the same. I will try to get it out tomorrow, well if it stops raining.
