Thanks, only just seen this didn't pop up on my digest. I think you might be right, I had a problem with power steering which was actually low power, enough to start but not enough to steer. My mechanic said it wasn't charging so a new alternator seem to have fixed it for a while but it's back again. Only seems to happen if I've not driven it for a few days. Something must be draining the battery. Seems weird I only get an obscure sound and no lights.

Occasionally when I unlock the car I hear a soft sort of bonging noise from inside. It happens a few times then stops and I don't hear it again. No warnings on the dash, car seems fine in every other way. I've searched the forums and none of my search phrases have uncovered anything. It's 2010 Petrol VRS. Any ideas?

1.8TSI and 2.0TSI engine failures
bullett replied to DGW's topic in Skoda Octavia Mk II (2004 - 2013)
It's worth chasing/escalating up the chain especially if you are brand loyal. My car was just older than 5 years and I got Skoda to pay half even though I'd serviced outside the network and had no other Skodas. -
1.8TSI and 2.0TSI engine failures

So, after some back and forth I've reached an agreement with Skoda for them to pay half. They wanted confirmation of the servicing I'd had done and the type and brand of oil, both of which I had and met their requirements. Not ideal but I don't have the time or money (or balls) to take this to court and end up with nothing and the cost is similar to what I was expecting to pay an indie to do a repair and I'll be getting a new engine with a warranty. I think that counts as a positive outcome. -

£6.5k from Skoda for a new engine. Ballpark £2.5k from an indie for a rebuild. -

So, update. Been back to the dealer, and they are offering nothing telling me it is a stretched timing chain that caused the problem and that they sometime fail if the chain stretches outside the parameters that the tensioner can support. That would be reasonable if the part had a replacement interval. As it doesn't and should last the life of the engine that looks like a fault to me. Skoda customer service have offered nothing either with the attitude that I'm not a loyal customer. Well, not now I'm not. I was potentially considering a new car soon, my wife has just had a approval for a company car and needs to choose what she wants and I've been a strong advocate of Skoda as a terrific car. I've just written to the head honcho to see if he can work this out without a script or having to take legal action. I've given him a week. Next step is to final a specialist to confirm the fault is what we all think it is. -
1.8TSI and 2.0TSI engine failures

Thanks, slogging through the thread surfaced the fact it's a non service item. My car is a 2010 petrol VRS with the CCZA engine code. 65000 miles. I purchased new. No clues anything was wrong, it was driving fine. Parked up one day and when I came back it didn't start. My mechanic told me the tensioner chain was slack and that lead me here. Just getting my facts together now before deciding on a plan of action. No goodwill offered so far so probably looking at SOGA. -

Well, Skoda have taken a look at my car and said "it's broken" needs a new engine £6500 please. No goodwill from Skoda as it's been serviced outside the dealer network. They claim not to have taken the engine to pieces just followed the troubleshooting guide to the point of using an endoscope to look inside and tell me what I already know. When pushed the chap admitted it was probably caused by the timing chain jumping but they couldn't say unless they took the engine apart. Is the cam chain tensioner a service item? if so when? What is the expected life of one (typically) Cheers -

Ok thanks. Approach the dealer or HQ or both? -

Hi, wish I had found this thread sooner. My 2010 vrs which has been flawless up to now took me to the station last week then wouldn't start. My mechanic took a look today and found a loose cam chain. That lead me here. It sounds like it's the same issue to me. So, what is my next move? get onto my dealer quoting SOGA? what are the facts I need to quote, this thread is 33 pages so I'll trawl through later for anything I've missed but I'm at work so not had the time so far. I purchased new, 65k miles as of now.
