  1. VW wish they could just 'make it so'... Trekkies unite! :sun:
  2. I'm aware I'm thinking out loud here but... If the repacement injectors are from a more recent version of the 1.6 engine, will the current injection pump and hoses take the new pressure load? Could that be an issue? If the pump is the same on the newer versions of the engine as it is on my 2010 car, then logically there shouldn't be a problem. Anyone know if the pumps are the same?
  3. So, can I assume that the replacement injectors will be those used in a more recent version of the engine, and the remap will basically update the management software to run the new hardware? I'd like to think the new injectors were tried and tested...
  4. Well, as long as the mechanics do a good job - bring it on! :sun:
  5. Am I right in saying that some of the 1.6 engines will get new injectors as part of the fix? If so, a new set of injectors for my 80 000 mile Octavia might not be bad news! Opinions?
  6. Finally got my 'rough idle' problem sorted - thanks to advice and posts on this forum! My new 2010 1.6 CR diesel Octavia had been 'hunting' at idle, and had cut out on both my wife and myself at junctions due to the poor idling. Something had to be done! Checking out these forums, it seemed that if a new timing belt was incorrectly installed the valve timing could be out by up to 1 tooth of the belt, and that could be causing the rough idle: other options included exhaust sensors misreading and injectors. The car has done about 80 000 miles, about 6000 on a new timing belt put on by the previous owner. Booked the car into my local Skoda dealership (Ingrams of Ayr), explained the symptoms and put forward the suggestions from the forum. I also asked them to change the oil - reading the forums these engines seem to need good quality oil, and I didn't know which oil was in it - but it had definitely been over-filled, another no-no from forum posts. Ingrams quoted £78/hour for using their diagnostic hardware, which I think is a bit on the steep side but I guess is the going rate. Anyway, it turned out the valve timing was out, by 1/2 tooth, but everything else checked out fine. Ingrams offered to re-time the belt and check out the pulleys etc, or if I insisted they'd fit a new timing kit. They were confident the belt was in good nick and a genuine Bosch part, so they just re-timed the valves and did the oil change. They also were confident no damage would have been done - apparently the engine management system can control valve timing so no real power would have been going through the mis-timed valves, potentially blowing away my valve seats. I hadn't been losing power, and the MPG seeme to be sitting around 55 according to the dash, so I guess that's true. Spectacular difference in the car! Brilliant result! Ticks over like a mini-RollsRoyce, and pulls smoothly and predictably away from junctions. Peachy. To me, the best value doesn't always go with the cheapest cost - Ingrams may have cost more than the tyre and exhaust specialst the previous owner used, but £ for £ the value they offer is streets ahead! My moral dilema now is - should I contact the previous owner and advise against using that garage? Or should I just live and let live?
  7. Just a random thought - you're not leaving anything plugged into the cigarette lighter socket overnight? The socket stays active all the time ... Hope you get it sorted!
  8. Personally, I find the gear change display a bit of a pain... It always seems to want me to change up earlier that the seat of my pants tells me to - so the display will tell me to change into 4th on the flat at just under 30 mph: the revs drop to 1125 rpm and it sounds like it's labouring. No. So - I just ignore it... Simples! BTW I have a 1.6 CR diesel, 2010 model Octavia in SE trim.
  9. Thanks for the recommends... Just waiting for a cruise control stalk to arrive - then I'll pay one of them a visit! :sun:
  10. Some interesting responses on this topic - and clearly, some very high standards of driving and consideration for other road users being shown on the forum. I'm with everyone on how frustrating it can be to be stuck behind a lane hog - and I've got two things to add. Certain marques of car seem to induce a sense of entitlement in the mind of the driver - brashly overbearing other road users behind their big German badge of privilege. To me, let 'em get on with it - I have no need of such artificial support for my self-esteem. There is a new form of aggressive driving out there, arising from the use of cruise control. Some drivers seem to see nothing wrong in overtaking with a differential speed of 1 MPH - which means they take ages to overtake. If you're about four seconds behind an HGV you are sometimes faced with a choice of indicating and moving out even if you feel it's intruding into the other driver's braking zone - dangerous in itself; or accepting that you are being effectively blocked in and will have to drop speed. Either way, inconsiderate use of cruise control is interrupting the normal ebb and flow of driving. I'm with Hudson01 - its just best to drive as if every other car is attempting to kill you. :|
  11. Talk about ships that pass in the night! Whilst I was getting together my reply to mannyo Kerans answered my question! Now, if I can only get my car to go as fast I'll be a happy chappy! Thanks guys - :sun:
  12. Glad I asked! Didn't mean to offend anyone with the link - just wanted to know what was what. I don't want to pay as much as that for the proper cable - but I guess there is no real choice. I know nothing about modern CAN-bus cars and so forth - but I intend to keep the Octavia for as long as I can. My last car, an Astra 'G', was brilliant, and took me to 180 000 miles. I have the same ambition fo the Skoda! I'm technically minded and (reasonably) competent with computers, so I guess the quicker I buy the cable the sooner I'll start saving money and the more value I'll get out of it. Before I bite the bullet, is there any way I can find someone locally who has a cable I can try or share? I live in Ayrshire.. Thanks, Neil
  13. Hi - I want to install and enable a cruse control stalk on my 2010 Octavia 1.6 Diesel. I know I'll need a VCDS cable to enable the new controller, but I baulk at paying £200 + for a Ross cable. Has anyone used the cable from VAG Diagnostics? < Link Removed > - costs £80. Claims to allow access to the Ross VCDS software - but it's easy to claim, not so easy to prove! Has anyone experience of this cable or company? Any good? Thanks - Neil
  14. Just a quick tuppence worth here... We once left an electic cool box connected through a permanently live ciggy socket - by the following morning there was no charge left in the car battery. A cool box will draw about 5 amps - over 12 hours that's 60 Amp Hours - more than enough drain to stop the car starting. We won't do that again! Thanks for the heads-up on the ciggy socket - I had assumed it switched itself off after an hour or so.
  15. I got mine from Rainworth Skoda's shop on eBay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321192081674?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT and cost £21. Seemed to be genuine, fitted fine, came in a Skoda box, but made in China. If you give them your reg they will check it fits your car. Still waiing for my cruise control stalk though!
