  1. So after its epic road trip around europe (CLICK HERE) , it's MOT time (Well, the end of July). So Thanks to the guys at Brake Depot, I have a set of grooved and Dimpled discs and Mintex pads ready to go on. Also still have to fit the Whiteline Adjustable rear sway bar! Current brakes are way past it, the discs have been on since new! Also, have a guy coming tomorrow to take the small ding out of the passenger rear door, when thats done the bodywork will be pretty much factory fresh. The car has no big scratches or anything on it at all!
  2. It was only about 4 hours drive from Munich to Stelvio, probably the shortest journey on the whole trip! I never bothered looking at my average much, when I glanced at it I was seeing mid 30's as normal. However, On the autobahn/Ring/Mountains not so much! Well as their prices fall there are some bargains to be had! Get yourself another haha. As for Switzerland and the queue, it was probably the prettiest queue I've been in! The Mrs is now itching for a Ski trip so will have to try win her around... We were away for 15 days in total. One night at the Nurburgring, 2 Nights in Munich, 2 Nights in Como, 2 Nights in rome and 6 nights in Sicily.
  3. As soon as we hit Germany, it was derestricted autobahn. My last go at driving at high speed legally, and managed to hit an indicated 145mph on the speedo in the end. Last stop before home time was Reims, where I could tot up the epic fly massacre on my bumper. This place is a must look for anyone driving through, its on the way back so why not! So after nearly dead on 4150 miles, the Skoda made it back. And although the brakes are now dead (they were on their last legs before I left) and its MOT is due, its still as good as the day it left. It swallowed all of our gear with ease, and had masses of space to go. It took a battering on long drives on the motorway, up mountain passes, dodging mad italians and down ancient cobbled streets. It even survived the Green Helll with me driving! I know these cars divide opinion in the car community, but its now a car I really love. It’s fantastic fun, and yet somehow sensible too. The perfect all rounder on a budget.
  4. Okay, so where to begin? Maybe two years ago. Because it was during that summer, me and 3 friends jumped in an Audi A4 and drove around Europe. We Visited the South of France, Monaco, Milan, Lake Como, The Stelvio Pass, Munich and more. It was a fantastic holiday, and upon seeing some Pictures I convinced my Mrs it was probably the best way to do ours as well. What started as a trip to a family members holiday home in Sicily, turned into my own personal planning nightmare for a few weeks. But trust me, it was more than worth it. The route I devised was as follows: Start: Oxford (Home) Stop 1: Nurburgring, Germany. Stop 2: Munich, Germany. Stop 3: Lake Como, Italy (Via the Stelvio Pass). Stop 4: Rome, Italy. Stop 5: Sicily, Italy. I stopped at "Lake Bolsena" just north of Rome on the way home, and Baden-Baden in Germany. First off I want to say, despite my excessive photography normally nearly all of these were taken on my phone. I really couldn't be bothered to lug my DSLR around and didn't really use it. Did use my GoPro so a video is on its way! So apologies for the terrible terrible phone photos. Okay, so it was an early start Saturday morning to get to the port. In fact, some might say too early. I ended up arriving over an hour before I was meant to, but the lovely lady at P&O simply said “Would you like the next Ferry, it leaves in 10 minutes?” Fantastic. Meant getting to the ‘Ring a bit earlier and more time to look around. Annoyingly, before we even hit Belgium one of my beam adapters flew off. Had to improvise with some electrical tape. This turned out to be the only real car mishap of the trip though, so I cant complain too much. My first trip was April of last year, in a friends very loud and very fast Corvette C6. We missed a couple of classic places to go so made sure to do that this time… After a nights sleep, I got up early on the Sunday and headed to the track to drool over cars and turn a few laps. Its the first time I’ve had the car at its “Limits” and both on track, and the local roads I have to say i was very surprised. The “Boring” and “understeery” characteristics everyone says about on these cars wasn't boring at all, it was very manageable and great fun in the tight corners to chuck around. It didn’t take much to get the back end round and help the nose tuck in, and once you got used to using its weight, its smiles all round really. Definitely need more track time booked for it now! Next stop, MUNICH. Now, I have a friend out there I met up with. And due to the local Beer, pictures are fairly thin on the ground for here. So I’ll skip to the Stelvio Pass…. Once again, the car was flawless. The steep inclines, sharp bends and adverse weather didn't hold it back (just some traffic!) This route provided a beautiful drive into Como, and the next day we went on a bit of an explore. Ditched the car for a bit, too… Next up, ROME. And yes, the drivers are even more madder than you could possibly imagine. But I soon realised if you drive like them, the whole system sort of “Works”. Lanes become optional, as do speed limits and personal space. Horn use is not optional. Did a few touristy bits which gave the car a nice break… I still love Alfa 159’s! Annoying construction was everywhere this year, not just in Rome! Apparently some designer was paying for this to be restored. Next trip was a long one, Sicily. Due to the unique way Italian ferry services work, and their websites, I was unsure how or IF I’d even get across when I got to Villa San Giovani! But we were fairly confident after reading some out of date comments on trip advisor, and we didn’t have a choice anyway so we just went for it. Fortunately, after the mammoth drive through italy (10 hours by this point) it was as simple as buying a ticket, and then a classic “Italian” Boarding (Read as, fast and dangerous) we were on! By this point the trip had already reset itself after hitting the 2,000 mile marker. It was another 3hour drive before we got to the house in Sicily, up a tiny and very steep cobblestone road which has probably taken about 10,000 miles of life off my clutch and a definitely taken a lot of the rigidity out of my Cupra R splitter. Had an amazing 5 days here in the beautiful sunshine, trying to cram in as much as we could! Including remote classic sicilian restaurants, boat trips, eating some more, beaches, more eating, and a lot of Red Wine. One trip I enjoyed was going to “Erice” a small ancient Arab town on the top of a mountain. Once again, the Skoda played Mountain Goat very well… And after taking the photo above, I turned around and took….. It’s pretty high up. TOURIST SHOT! So lets skip forward to the trip back? This is a Car Forum after all. 3 days, each with over 12hours worth of driving. All the way to north of Rome to a beautiful lake, then onto Baden Baden via Switzerland! Looking a bit dirty at the First Italian stop… Booked this place on a whim, had no idea what it would be like. I think I won? Next up, the Nazi state for cars: Switzerland. I paid your €40 bloody fee and I find myself sat in one of the worst traffic jams of my life, thanks for that! Turns out I was queueing for the San Gothard tunnel. Nightmare. However, it was in a valley next to an airfield doing an amazing air show. This was accompanied by passing Steam Trains. So we were all out of our cars, since we had something to watch.

  7. Spend my working day making stuff out of Carbon Fibre, there I am on my lunch break wrapping stuff in fake carbon.... Not entirely sure what I think of it, but I had some spare trim I picked up from the scrapyard at the weekend to play with so thought for the sake of £5 ebay specialzzzz wrap I'd give it a shot.

  12. Had a pretty good weekend on the banana. First off, went to the local scrappy looking for mk4 gems. There was a well specced Elegence estate there, so got a few bits for both me and my mums TDI estate. Front arm rest was something I've been missing, so feel pretty lucky finding an Octavia one in pretty good nick (was caked in dog hair mind you). Nice easy fit as well, made sure to get all the brackets and bolts from the scrapper. Also picked up the interior trimmings as I want to experiment with different wraps/colours. Another nice addition I'm working on is soft close grab handles, stole some grey ones off of one of the many MK4 Golfs in there, and instead of butchering them for the soft close catch I'm going to try spraying them. So far they look pretty good using "rubberised black" enamel spray from halfords. As for new parts, lovely Cupra R splitter turned up form TPS. Love it now it's fitted!
  13. Okay so tonight we managed to get fitted: TT Bushes, Forge 007p recirc valve, new temp sensor. Also welded up a loose exhaust bracket. Cleared all the fault codes, took it out and it feels great. On closer inspection the rear beam bushes don't look too old and I may have been a bit hasty to order them. Still, keeping them as spares along with the thermostat. All genuine, of course!

  16. Hi there. Just wondering what little bits off of other MK4 platform cars are nice little upgrades for the Octavia? So far I'm obviously upgrading to TT Bushes etc. strut braces maybe soon. Im also looking at swapping to a black carpet (who thought white was a good idea for the VRS?!) One thing I do fancy doing is soft touch grab handles, obviously would have to modify mine or get R32 ones due to black headlining. Another part that looks like a decent swap is the drivers interior door handle with the switches, the plastic on the octavia is horrible. Would this be a straight swap? Any other tips? Thanks in advance.
  17. Okay so all parts ordered from TPS, should be done tomorrow evening. My friend couldn't find his bushes so in the end I went for: Standard rear beam bushes Audi TT lower arm bushes. Genuine temp control sensor Genuine thermostat. New genuine Leon Cupra R splitter Any handy tips on nice little MK4 platform parts I can upgrade mine with? Already looking into soft close grab handles an a black carpet!
  18. Always use Genuine myself! Buy cheap, buy twice and all that. Indeed, you cant go near most cars without a laptop handy. Annoying in some respects but useful in others! haha. Yeah I'm pretty sure it was mentioned straight away. Pretty sure the sensor I need is part number "059 919 501A" listed in the useful part numbers section here, something about a green connector on there too.
  19. Hello people! Thanks for all your replies. Car has been running okay, although I did notice last night on my drive home it didn't get fully up to temp. This morning it had a little splutter and for about 3 seconds idled a bit high and came back down, then was okay (if a bit jumpy from cold). So, borrowed my mans VAG-COM/ VCDS again and sure enough... "17704 - Error in Mapped Cooling system (Check Temp Sensor and Thermostat) P1296 - 35-00". So I've cleared that and I'll be getting him to fit a new Thermostat and Temp sensor (I imagine its just the sensor but for the price of a thermostat I may as well get both replaced). The day I bought it my mechanic told me to get that replaced as its a common issue, and now you've reminded me I will. I don't think there is anything wrong with it, but I like to replace common faults before they leave me stranded! haha
  20. As above a friend has some Poly's in his garage he took off his Bora when he parted it out. They haven't done much mileage so may as well throw them in. What would you recommend for the rear beam bushes? As they are starting to show a bit of play in them as well.
  21. Well after a weird engine issue last night, a good clear on vag com and a blast out SEEMS to have fixed it. Looks like I have some second hand polybushes for the lower arm rear bush issue, and will figure out what rear beam bushes I'm putting on in the next week.
  22. No it's because I had to get to work and told him he could get his grubby hands on it later tonight. He's not only the best mechanic I know, but the best fabricator and welder. This sort of stuff I can do myself but when it comes to resetting fault codes I don't have the equipment.
  23. Had no time to check that but will tonight thank you! Yeah I usually treat a car to expensive fuel and redex when I first buy them. I won't now! Haha
  24. The guy before me barely drove it so it could easily be that. Will see how it goes and update the thread! Will get it scanned again on my lunch to check. I need my own vag com.
