  1. The Octy is going on Thursday. To be replaced by a VW Touran Sport, so I'm still staying in the family, just the Wolfsburg branch. (Albeit the slightly shadier Auto5000 lot...) As if to express her annoyance at being binned off, the passenger side door lock (External barrel) decided to pack in working the day we did the deal to trade the Octy in. Put the key in and it just turns loosely. So, if anyone sees a silver S reg GLX estate go over the central locking & window electrics etc. carefully. A lot of it doesn't work! BTW, thanks everyone for the useful info I've gleaned from this site over the past couple of years. I'll be dropping by from time to time, I would think.
  2. You've been to www.dhmo.org, haven't you?
  3. I must admit I interpreted it as "I love the smell of diesel in the morning" rather than anything about driving like a numpty. Sadly, my TDi doesn't smoke much since I did the Cage mod ages ago...
  4. Ah, the old 'give it a thump/push/shake' technical solution. Wonderful!
  5. I believe temp workers are due to get additional rights to bring them more in line with permies very soon! Looking forward is the way ahead with this one, I think...
  6. Good luck. I've had numerous people look at mine no no avail. The best I could do was make sure the door seals are all OKish so no more rain gets in to cause havoc! The old girl will hopefully be moving on soon. Hopefully we'll get something with more reliable electrics.
  7. We've got a manager at work that recently binned off a couple of contractors for fairly minor stuff despite the fact they were pretty good at what they do. We're all quite surprised they were let go as with the summer hols coming up, we're gonna be short staffed big time! Thing is, contractors are seen as easy come, easy go I'm afraid. These guys were old hands at contracting so water off a duck's back to them. I've had personality clashes with this particular manager, but fortunately I'm a permie so he can't get rid of me so easily... Anyway, chalk it up to experience. I hope something comes along soon!
  8. UV filter on at all times to act as protection for the lens. Polarizing filter for shooting through glass etc. where cutting reflections is wanted.
  9. Hmf, he could have climbed down a bit once he realised you weren't advertising crap but trying to be helpful. Grumpy sod!
  10. Dell Optiplex 740 Small form factor is the smallish one i was going to go for before I decided the next size up would fit where I wanted it to go. Not massively small but runs the V word well enough. Runs Linux without even breaking a sweat!
  11. Looking at your introduction post, I'd say go for the 2005 just because of your comment about SWMBO liking the leather seats. Also, the mileage is a bit more like it. Low mileage cars make me a bit nervous....
  12. Last winter some moron in our neigbourhood had some V6 Rover thing which he left idling to warm up of a morning. I was sorely tempted to stuff a potato up his exhaust as it was rather annoying when I was trying to drop off to sleep after a night shift. Yes, his exhaust, not the cars! I always defrost screen etc. using other means, then start the engine and get going straight away taking it a bit easy until the temp gauge is indicating around normal.
  13. Apologies for exhuming an old post, but I thought it was relevant to a question I have... Reading through it, most of the comments seem relevant to driving a manual transmission. What would the procedure be at a junction in a DSG car? I might end up getting one in the next few weeks and it occured to me I've never actually found out how to drive an 'automatic' properly. Hire cars etc. I've driven I've just made it up as I go along but if I'm actually going to own one, I thought I'd better do a bit of research!
  14. You must have been furious to accidentally spend that! Seems like training salesmen these days doesn't include keeping their idiot opinions to themselves and give the customer a little credit if they appear to know what they want...
  15. I was, indeed, going to say Linux if pressed for clarification... I know the title of the thread was specific, but sometimes it is helpful to think outside of the box as it were. Download a Live CD image & burn it to a CD. Boot it up & see what you think! Or, try the WUBI installer thing if you've got a bit of free disk space. There was a recent thread discussing the merits of various Linux distributions. Ubuntu is popular & there must be some reason for that, but personally I'd go for Mepis or openSUSE. SuSe is the first Linux I tried & Mepis is the one I have been using for the last few years. Hope that helps rather than adds confusion...
  16. "And I've coated the valve caps in dog ess aich one tee..."
  17. There are alternatives to either XP or Vista...
  18. Next time you see them staring & pointing when you park up, wander over casual like & ask them if they saw anything from last time you parked there as you suspect some juvenile delinquents let your tyre down... All friendly like.
  19. I'm sure I saw a grocer's apostrophe in this lot somewhere...:P
  20. I saw a Merc braking hard & flashing it's brake lights the other day. Presumably it is legal somehow otherwise the type wouldn't have been approved for use/sale in the UK, surely!
  21. Go into the admin pages of the router & set it to a fixed channel. Swap around a bit until you find a channel with no interference. If you have a think about all the kit blasting rf signals round the neighbourhood I sometimes wonder that anything works at all!
  22. Mine's a bit intermittent. I might have to have a go at cleaning it as per the other thread...
  23. Yep, much sympathies from me too! Our little man had a febrile fit yesterday. Think it's because of a slight ENT infection. Got given some antibiotics from the hospital & we're keeping him dosed with Calpol. Touch wood he seems fine this arvo. Luckily, I work shifts & yesterday & today are days off. I might have to make my excuses on Thurs if he isn't well enough to go to nursery. Fortunately little 'uns do seem to bounce back!
  24. When Mrs. O98 had a C Section, the insurance co. seemed to be quite happy to leave it to her to decide if she was fit/confident to drive... I guess it's your call as long as you bear in mind that if you have an accident that turns out to be contributed to due to medical issues the ins co. will be rubbing their hands with glee!
  25. I used to get intermittent issues like this until I finally got round to sticking down some of the rubber seals around the driver's side front door that were a bit loose. Lots better now, although I need to maybe do a better job than the double sided tape I tried initially. So, water ingress issue in all probability in my case.
