  1. It was done by the evening, all working now! Aluminium rivnuts installed. Thanks for all the help.
  2. The rivets are on the way out. The National 'engineer' that changed the glass previously ditched all of the grommets, which explains why there's more road noise from the passenger side. I guess that will be a duck tape job.
  3. The glass is currently held up by some door stops. This kept it in place for the past few weeks. Today I have the weather, and the help, to hopefully get the regulator swapped.
  4. As I only have this job to do, I was hoping to avoid buying the tool if possible. There are a number of people using these kinds of methods, according to YT. I would use Deon's first method
  5. I would prefer to avoid putting rivets back on, so something like the Lokuts, or Rivnuts seems like a good idea. Does anyone know what size I should be looking for?
  6. Thanks for the heads-up on checking the year. I think I will get a new reg from Ebay. I am not sure what you mean by a new lock module? When I look it up, it seems to be the motor for the wing mirror. Is that right?
  7. Sorry, I have another question. As far as I can tell, the regulator that is currently on the passenger side has a working motor, but either the cable is wound wrong, or snapped, as the glass doesn't move up, and appears not to have both supports. On Ebay I can see a second hand regulator with motor at £72, and new ones without motor from £25 to £50. Any advice on which would be best is appreciated. https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313&_nkw=skoda+fabia+mk1+window+regulator&_sacat=0
  8. I am not near Oxfordshire, I am in Yorkshire, thanks. I have a handy man neighbour who I can get to help me. He's relatively cheap, and does upkeep on his ageing VW Polo. Admittedly, he's driving around with most of the driver's side trim in a box on the back seat, but at least his clutch is working!
  9. Ha ha! Yes! Many thanks to you both! Hopefully I won't ever have to actually replace the ABS pump, as they are not easy to find! Looking forward to telling the garage the good news, he's always sceptical about getting help from people via the Internet. Window regulator next. I think I'll get someone to help with the drilling, as I'm not supposed to do any thing as recovering from an operation. Do I need high speed steel bits to get the rivets out?
  10. I switched the broken fuse with a 40A from Halfords, warning lights are still on, so I guess another trip to the friendly VCDS person is in order? The product code for the Halfords part was FUSE 298, which is apparently the same as FUSE 133. They are in the process of changing product codes. FYI
  11. Like this set? https://www.halfords.com/motoring/tools/fuses-electricals-and-fixings/fuses/halfords-assorted-oto-strip-fuses-30>60-amp-fuse133-705310.html
  12. Rain has interfered with plans today, but I managed to get out during a break and loosened the nuts on that strip fuse. It is definitely in two parts! Will any VW 40A strip fuse work as a replacement?
  13. Maybe the strip on the one with the red and green does have a crack in it. I'll have to check in the morning.
  14. @TMB Thanks for 'upgrading' to rivets, Skoda! The reason the regulator is knackered is a bodge job on window replacement from National subcontractor, when the passenger side window was bricked, along with all the other cars on the street I had parked on. Lesson learned - do not park opposite a building site when there are kids around! Here's a photo of those ones. Hopefully everything is visible, despite the flash.
  15. This is the one in position 6 on the battery. Are there any more that should be checked. @TMB HatBoyHarvey on YT makes it look easy, but maybe he's already replaced the rivets on his door.
  16. @Breezy_Pete Thanks for helping with this. Sorry, 'Oil light flashing' was an autocorrect typo. It's a red flashing exclamation mark, supposedly telling me there's a problem with the brake fluid, but all seems good on that front. All brakes seem fine. We checked the fuses when I got the VCDS reading, but I have got them out again to photograph. Fuse in cabin below, and the wiring to the ones on the battery. I'll do a post below with the rest.
  17. My trusty 2007 1.4l diesel Bohemia has presented the ABS warning light, and oil light flashing. I have had the VCDS reading done by a friendly Briskodan, and unsurprisingly it showed ABS pump fault. Have checked the fuses, and all look good, so I think I need a replacement ABS pump, or reconditioning of the current one. The garage have also diagnosed the ABS pump. I have tried emailing Coverdale at the Hotmail address, but no response. I can see second hand ones on Ebay, but I am a bit lary about putting a 20 year old part into the car, considering I will be paying the garage for 3 hours of labour for the swap. Does anyone know of a good place to get the reconditioning done, or to buy a replacement? Google isn't helping. In other news, I also need to buy a window regulator for the passenger side, but I can't see any that include the speaker. Any tips on that welcome.
  18. Sorry, I didn't think to ask for the old fuse. If there are 61A going through it I imagine it probably does get quite warm!
  19. I took it to a car electrics place who have the VCDS etc. It was the fuse for the power steering! There was no visible damage, so it would be unlikely that I would have worked that out myself. Luckily they carry them as a stock item. It wasn't a cheap visit because of labour and the diagnostics, but the part was only £6! It needed recoding after fitting to get the PAS to work, apparently. Another thing to check before spending money!
  20. I understand that if there were very low fluid then there should be considerable noise from the PAS pump, which I haven't experienced. The issue has resolved itself by leaving the car for 5 or so hours up until today. The PAS failed just before I parked at work and was also not working when I got into the car at the end of the day, it did not come back on as it had before so the drive home was a good upper body work out! The situation up until today was that the PAS worked for 15-20 minutes after starting the car and then failed. Now it seems to be in a permanent fail state. I'll have a look at the wiring and check the voltages again as suggested. I don't have another battery to cross reference with.
  21. Battery light comes on when ignition turned and then goes off when engine starts. I'll check the alternator wiring tonight.
  22. I checked the voltage on the battery: Before starting 12.4 - 12.6V After starting 14.3V After starting with rear de-mister and headlights on 14.3V The battery is 61A Varta. It has a little window that says replace battery if showing clear or yellow. It is showing clear, but the readings look OK. I have an aversion to changing the battery as I did that a few times when I had problems with the electrics in the Felcia, but the cause was always the alternator(s). I tried to use pliers to turn the lid, but they were slipping off because they were at 30-45° What I need are pliers with a large adjustable jaw and short handle. Not a common combination! I was hoping there was a device that had something like a ship's steering wheel attached to a shaft that would grip the lid. I don't have a hair drier, but I do have a paint stripper. Hm... That may be too much power!
  23. The power steering has been dropping out for the past few days on my 07 Fabia 1.4 diesel. I decided to check the PAS fluid level after reading Tech1e's excellent post on the possible issues with PAS on the Fabia. I don't have VAGCOM at home. Anyone who has tried this will know that the power assisted steering fluid reservoir is located underneath the battery! You can just about see the green lid under the battery plate on this photo. You can see the reservoir and pump on the right on this photo (photos from previous threads). The PAS lid is a fluted one in my case. It is stuck fast and I can't move it, neither could anyone else I asked to try. There is no room to get a spanner or similar down there to assist as the reservoir is inset. Does anyone know of a device that would grip the lid and increase the leverage so that I can open it? The device would have to be vertical rather than the usual jar opener which is horizontal (if you see what I mean). The PAS symptoms include - PAS warning light comes on after 15-20 mins driving and PAS is lost Headlights dim when the steering wheel is turned No PAS and warning light comes on if car left for 4-5 hours, but then PAS works after 1 - 2 mins driving
  24. I'm thinking Essex is probably fairly safe... for falcons!
  25. That is exactly what it says on the print out from VCDS. Trust my car to have an exotic problem!
