  1. Have you searched the forum? I've done a few posts about this before, not saying it's the answer to all your problems but I reckon it will explains all you need to know
  2. I've done this job before and this is how I did it : Jack up both sides of the car so that the front wheels are off the floor. ( this is needed because if one side is on the floor you make the anti roll bar twist, so it'll make the bolts hard to turn, and will go with a bang when you get them out!) and also of course remove the wheel on the side your replacing... This could be both sides! Remove the the arch liner with torqx t25 (maybe it's 20) this may not be needed, but will make life way easier! i used a ratchet ring spanner, for the top bolt ( this bit might be the other way round!) and a normal ring spanner for the other (it needs to be a ring spanner where the ring is at an angle to the main handle, which is pretty normal) this allows enough access. to get enough room you'll have to turn the steering wheel all the way to move the driveshaft a bit. hope this helps !
  3. the removal process is the same if im not mistaken. you take off the cover over the door grab handle (it just clips on, but its pretty tight.) then use a small screwdriver to push in and up on the front of the switch, then the back then it should be out
  4. You mention its a 2001 model, (I could be wrong but I think ive got this right). you have a MK1 fabia not a MK2. You'd probably have more luck in the MK1 forum.
  5. I have a 1.4tdi 80 without a DPF, but mine is a 57 plate, the newer ones will have a DPF. if your getting a car with a DPF anyway then id go for a 1.6tdi, the 1.4 is okay on the motorway but I find it a bit noisy and slightly gutless when you get to the speed limit. also getting on short slip roads can be a slight challenge, nothing dangerous but could do with a bit more umph! saying all this, mine is 10 years old and 85K miles, so its probably not going to be as good as car that's 4 years old anyway.
  6. I posted this a while back: I found that after fiddling it worked perfectly for a while.... then died again. Then I took the connector off the motor, and the 'L' shaped connector (the loom plugs in L shape connector then the connector into the motor) once apart spray all with contact cleaner and you will see some long thin 'U shape connectors (at the top of each of the 'U' is a little nib pointing inwards to make the connection) get some needle nose pliers and squeeze them closer together, so that you can just see a gap ( set mine to 40 thou, but just get them close but not touching) has been fine now for about 2000 miles now:) the L shaped connector actually comes apart, with some fiddly clips you'll need to take it to bits to make sure its all in good condition
  7. The 1.4tdi doesn't use a DMF, unless the service department did t know that of course! i agree £459 is actually a decent price, but that's not been any apology and since this happening and looking at the reviews for the garage, probably won't be using them. Just going to wait till its a bit more undriveable then get the localgarage to do it, like I say it's a valeo unit they'd fit which as far as I can tell seem to be a reputable brand. ben
  8. just had a reply: ' I am writing to confirm that we are participants in Skoda ‘Fixed Price Service and Repairs’ The price fitted for a clutch on a Fabia is as advertised at the reduced price of £459 includes the three clutch components and labour. If you would like me to book your car in please let me know ' No apology, just that they will charge the correct price.... was thinking of getting an Octavia from there in 12 months, not anymore!
  9. Just emailed them, will see what happens!
  10. Seems that way! just concerns me that if someone without a bit of knowledge about cars went in and got quoted that then they'd be out of pocket big time!
  11. Well it's Bristol street Chesterfield which looks like a participating dealer to me. He said he would use valeo clutch which from what I can can is of oem standard (for the indipendant) any thoughts ?, is there a get out clause that the car has to be under 3 years old for that price that I've missed ? ben
  12. I think clueless, he was at the service desk to get the price for the parts, then went out back to see how long it would take, came out and said 4 or 5 to do it and came up with £810 and yes they will not be doing it... saying that the gearbox oil is £6/ltr and is £10+ online so I'll probably use them for that. Anyone know the quantity needed for a gearbox oil change? For some reason I think it's 1.9ltr but can't remember thanks, ben
  13. Hi all, my father has talked me out of doing my own clutch on my 1.4tdi Fabia. main dealer in Chesterfield quoted £810 for a clutch (£250+VAT for the parts) went to a local indipendant recomended by a friend, £340 inc VAT all in. when I go on the skoda uk website it says a clutch on a Fabia is £459..... was the guy in the dealership just having me on? Worth a message to skoda customer service ? thanks, ben
  14. It wasn't so much the lack of oil concerning me, more that its not been done for 83k miles. I'd presume some normal EP90 synthetic manual gearbox oil would suffice? thanks, Ben
  15. had the cam belt done about 2 years ago with water pump etc so was hoping to not have to go down that route. Any idea what level the gearbox oil should be? id assume you fill it until it spills out of the filling hole. thanks, Ben
  16. Thank you very much !!!!! I cant see why id need to drain the coolant though, but a real help! just need to find a weekend that I'm not busy now
  17. BNV, any idea where to get instructions from? cheers, Ben
  18. where did you buy the car from? sounds a lot like flood damage to me (I hope someone can tell me im wrong!) theres a control module for the windows (IIRC its in the passenger footwell near the middle of the car.) could be an issue with that. im 90% sure they control the windows and doors electrics, might be called the comfort module, not too sure
  19. Hi everyone, The clutch pedal on my 57 reg 1.4tdi fabia has got rather high now (83k miles). I'm thinking of doing the clutch my self, looks like its £150 for 3 piece kit. is there anything else I need to get? I don't have a clutch alignment tool, would a generic one from ebay be alright or is a fancy one required? also are there any stretch bolts? from what I've read online the ones for the drive shaft and gearbox mounts might be. thanks, Ben Waine
  20. not heard of this exact problem before but... when you open the door there is a rubber cover over the wiring from the car to the door, the wires inside often break because of all the bending of the door opening etc. take the boot off and have a look. only thing id say is that its a bit tricky to get off so have a bit of a google for what ive said and youll fins some pictures. out of interest, how long have you had the car? not flood damage is it?
  21. I found that after fiddling it worked perfectly for a while.... then died again. 22. I actually ended up dropping the pump out from underneath the wheel arch! that way I could actually see how much was in there, have you checked for leaks on the steering rack ? they do seem to tend to go on the Mk2, also ive heard the pumps can go as well but I think that was more of an issue on the Mk1's. in relation to your question, you need to take off the battery cables and the plastic cage around the battery (from memory this just clips off once the battery cables are off.) after that towards the front of the car there is a bolt with a small plate that grips the bottom of the battery, should be able to take it out then. (could be wrong, was about a year ago I last messed about with my battery.)
  23. Hi all, I'm thinking of getting this towbar: https://www.towbars-uk.co.uk/product/7020/skoda-fabia-2-hatch Its about an extra £100 to have a detachable one, so I'm thinking of the fixed version. But I have parking sensors (factory fitted) and don't want them going off every time I go into reverse. Does anyone have any experience of having a fabia with a towbar and parking sensors? does it work alright? Thanks Ben
  24. Ok so after much swearing I've got them working. i took the door card out and had a good look at the loom to see if anything looked a missed, thought I'd try unplugging and replugging to see what happened, first one I did was the 90degree connector on the motor and the other side that connects to the loom, put it back on and it worked! So I've got some contact cleaner and sprayed it in and tyres to rub with a cotton bud, then dried with a hair dryer, put everything back and good as new now
