  1. Thanks Mark, good to know. 'Notchy' is a good description of how the clutch feels, although happily there's been no repetition of the incident I mentioned. Bleeding and adjustment has got to be worth a try. Paul
  2. Gear selection failed without warning on my 2011 Scout. Came to a standstill (on a dangerous corner on a single track country lane on a rainy night), turned the engine off, still wouldn’t engage in any gear. Feared the worst and rolled it back down the hill to safety. Left the engine off a few seconds and tried again. Went into gear and I got home, but parking up it wouldn’t go into reverse. Turned off the engine, left it a few seconds, tried again and it went in. Took it for a 15 minute test drive without further problems. I appreciate that there are a number of possible causes. Before I book it into the garage, any suggestions for how I might try to eliminate possibilities would be appreciated.
  3. Many thanks dilksie. Elsewhere it's called a "bumper spray cover". Happily I found the thing this morning where it fell out on the potholed track. Sorted.
  4. I've lost a small plastic cover from the front bumper of my '08 Scout. The part in question can be seen in the attached diagram...the line at 45deg from part #10 runs through it. It's shaped like a parallelogram and there's one on each side of the bumper. I'd be grateful if anyone can tell me what it's called, and better still, what the part no. might be. Thanks.
  5. Exhaust problem fixed for £78. Phew! >>>you just have to know how to drive it as and when required<<< Any advice on this?
  6. There's been some discussion re: Scout DPFs in another thread and the word there is that they're reliable. I hope that's the case as I have one, and am scarred from DPF nightmares with a Mazda 3.
  7. The Ottinger QS-Spurs arrived today, just 6 days after placing the order. Complete with instructions in English and several other languages, and with a pair of elbow-length waterproof gloves thrown in for good measure. They look good and if application proves to be simple enough they could be a good deal at the current 20% discount from aubu.de.
  8. >>>This is the first documented failure of a DPF fitted to a Scout I have read of on here in all my years on Briskoda.<<< As far as I know, the DPF itself is fine...there's certainly been no indication of any problems. >>>What happened, how did the centre section 'drop out'? Are you saying the exhaust is rotten? How has this resulted in the failure of the DPF?<<< I haven't seen it with my own eyes, but it appears that the centre pipe rotted and came away from the back section, dropping to the ground. National Tyres said that the front section was also affected...he said it has "sheered away"...and recommended replacing it rather than trying to fix it, which apparently involves a new DPF. Is that actually the case do you know? Clearly National Tyres just aren't geared up for tackling anything other than simple in & out jobs, and this task is beyond them. It's now with my garage and I'm awaiting their verdict, feeling tentatively optimistic that they'll find a more cost effective solution. >>>I assume your Mazda was a 6?<<< It's a 3. I still have it and managed to get it going today...I think the battery isn't holding a charge and is therefore failing to fire up the ignition, so I've ordered a new one. Hopefully it will keep me going until the Scout is back. >>>The Scout's DPF is remarkably reliable<<< That's reassuring. >>>at 7 years old / 50,000 miles we've never seen the DPF light.<<< And long may it last!
  9. Similar story with my Mazda. National rang back to advise that they're unable to do the job as it's too complex and labour intensive, and suggested sending it to a Skoda dealer. Wild panic set in as the till register in my brain went through the roof. Then spoke to my local engineer (who's never worked on a Scout, but still...) and I'm now on my way to get the car round to him for a second opinion. Also talked to the dealer I bought it from on 7 August and another option is to get it recovered to them, but although I have full breakdown cover, they're unlikely to be happy about that. Wish me a change of fortune...
  10. Damn and blast. Having had horrendous DPF probs on a Mazda I was smugly assuming my Scout 2.0 PD140 would not eat my wallet for this reason, at least. Wrong. Centre pipe dropped out, causing a problem with the front section. National Tyres have just advised it has a DPF. £960 down the swanee <groan>.
  11. I've finally made a decision, and it's a rather unexpected one. Whilst Spikes-Spiders have had some good reviews, they've also had some bad ones, e.g. a 2010 autobild.de review says: "Poor driving characteristics. Rating: Poor." Enough of a nudge to look elsewhere. I also realised that whilst easy application is highly important, so is getting up steep hills without breaking a chain under the increased pressure. The Ottinger brand generally scores highly under test conditions, including in a more recent autobild.de review in which it placed third of nine, behind Pewag Snox Pros. As the QS-Spur model is purportedly designed "for driving on intense gradient roads in the mountains", I figure they tick the right boxes. And at pennies under £100 from aubu.de there's a healthy saving of £200 to be had on the Spikes-Spiders. Purchasing from the German site was fairly straightforward with the aid of an online translator, and their after sales performance has been good so far. I'll comment further when I've received the chains.

  13. You're right, fast and easy application is essential and the Spikes-Spiders seem to be well designed in this respect. I hope I'm not going to need them, but I almost certainly will as I live up a steep track at an altitude of nearly 900' and my drive to work takes me up to 1400'. Winter tyres are a no brainer. Snow chains are for added peace of mind, and might just get me over the mountain, up the track and home in a snow storm.
  14. I've been looking at the various options for a set of snow chains, with easy fitting being a major criteria. I was thinking about either a Weissenfels Quattro M90 F30 or a Thule K23. Both at the expensive end but neither really screaming "this is the one". I'd looked at Spikes-Spiders Compact C3's but didn't like the idea of installing ugly hub mounting plates. At all. Reject. Then I came across the newer Easy Sport which eliminates the mounting plates in favour of two wheel bolt mounted studs, which looks a far more elegant solution. Also, they're adjustable so they don't become redundant with a change of car. The downside is they're £300. But having said that, it's an introductory price and they're more expensive direct from the Swiss manufacturer and other European dealers. With Roof Box offering to exchange used Easy Sports for any other brand of ladder track chain that they sell, including Thule K-Summits, I'm tempted. Does anyone happen to have any experience of the Easy Sports or other Spikes-Spiders?
  15. I'm thinking about these too as a possible alternative to switching between summer & winter sets. snig71 - are yours 17"? I'm toying with buying 16" so that snow chains are an option, but I haven't convinced myself yet.
  16. I bought a 2008 Scout TDI PD 140 a couple of weeks ago after a long run of bad luck with a Mazda 3 (all stemming from a DPF problem) and some Peugeots, and most recently an old Rover 75. I also have a Shogun which is presently having a gearbox change. My luck with cars has become legendary in the office, my garage suggesting that "If I didn't have bad luck I'd have no luck at all". I even broke down in the garage's Freelander. It's all been very expensive and very stressful. Thinking back, the sequence started when I was hit up the back side by a drunk driver one Saturday lunchtime, which wrote off my dependable 306. I do over 20k miles a year and, living in the back of beyond outside Brecon, having a reliable car is essential. I can't remember what started me thinking about Skodas - probably googled 'reliable cars' or something. A couple of mechanics endorsed their reputation for reliability, so the hunt was on for an Octavia TDI PD with a full history. It was a toss up between a 4x4 estate or a Scout. In the end I went for the latter's extra clearance, in view of the back roads and steep uphill track to my home. I found three in my price range (i.e. cheap) and set out on a 550 mile road trip to view them. The first was the most expensive and had some mechanical issues, but it gave me my first drive of a Skoda. The second, near Rugby, was a last minute find just before I set out. It was two leagues above the first, really tidy - almost like new - and evidently very well looked after by its one lady owner who happened to live just a few miles away in mid-Wales. I knew immediately that I'd take it, but checked the other one anyway and sure enough, there was no comparison. I've spent the past couple of weeks since I bought Hawkwind (it's silver, old hippies will understand) adding basic accessories like car mats and seat covers, and thinking about winter wheels. It's early days and I refuse to count chickens, but I'm hopeful that I may have done the right thing at last. The wealth of information, knowledge and experience available in this forum is outstanding and I hope to be around a good while.

  18. Rightly or wrongly the jury has returned a majority verdict in favour of the 17". Thanks for all suggestions.
  19. Found a mind boggling tyre bible which leaves me leaning towards the 17" route at the moment, but the jury is still out.
  20. Having taken delivery of some new 16x6 alloys for 205/55 R16 winter tyres on my 2008 Scout TDI, I was thinking of replacing the flaking OEMs with another new set, instead of giving them a refurb. My first thought on rim size was something to fit the current 225/50 R17s, 7x17 perhaps. Eventually I started questioning the merits of sticking with 17" for summer tyres, and wondered about putting 205/50 R16 summer tyres on the new alloys next spring, or to possibly get a second set of 16" alloys. Is there any real advantage to 17" tyres over 16" on a Scout in the summer? I guess 16"s might look a bit 'under wheeled' - but I'm not particularly bothered about looks. Technically, does it make better sense to stick with 17" summer tyres (in which case, what size rims should I go for?) or to switch to 16" tyres on 16x6 rims? All thoughts will be appreciated, thanks.
  21. Thanks S4Dane & Toxicvrs. I take it that the aluminium build causes no concern then.
  22. Preamble...I'm not in the least bit mechanically minded. I can also be extremely stupid. A few years back I changed a wheel using a scissor jack on gravel and it slipped. The disk cut into my hand leaving me literally scarred for life. You live and learn. Being intent on switching between summer and winter tyres on my Scout, I'm looking to buy a trolley jack to minimise the anxiety, but the various threads which highlight the problems with jacking points are a worry. So if there's something out there with an extra large rubber saddle to spread the load, all well and good. I'm only going to be using it for wheel changes, but even so it should pay for itself in a couple of years. I'm prepared to spend around £120. This SGS is a possibility. Thoughts/recommendations welcome, thanks.
