  1. So here's an interesting calculation ..... On my octopus Go tariff I can charge at 7.5p/kWh. The battery capacity on the iV is 13kWh so 0-100% charge costs me 97.5p Let's say I can get a 25 mile journey on pure E from a fully charged battery; this figure is not unreasonable if driven carefully on a single journey (coast + care) even in winter. Average price of unleaded is about 150p/litre (it varies) so 97.5p would buy me 97.5/150 litres of liquid fuel, or (97.5/150)/4.5 = 0.144 gallons of liquid fuel MPG is a figure that is calculated to give a measure of fuel economy so it makes some kind of sense to say that I am getting 25 miles from 0.144 gallons = 174 EMPG (Equivalent Miles Per Gallon) This thread has attracted a lot of interesting analysis so I thought I'd throw this one into the mix! Lots of variations spring to mind, e.g. what is the break even cost per kWh to get an EMPG of say 50? What is the EMPG if charging is done only at public stations, and so on .....
  2. sounds like your data is likely to be more reliable! I've only done one "trip" of 90 miles so I can't be sure.
  3. I managed to get over 70mpg on Hybrid over a longer journey (90 miles). The trick is (as posted elsewhere on this thread) to have: hybrid selected + untick the auto box + sports mode (not entirely sure if this is required - I need to experiment) + set your required charge level high (e.g. 80%) + lots of coasting + drive conservatively (i.e. try to avoid using the brake = look ahead, which is a responsible driving style anyway) ..... and it works!!! At times I was close to 80mpg. This was actually the first time I have had the opportunity to try this out since having the car. Re my original question, again, on pure E coasting helps, as does pre air con .. but for lots of short winter journeys, any EV is going to struggle to get a good return; thankfully I can top up the battery every night on my 7p/kWh Octopus intelligent go tariff so I am very happy with how it is all working out now and it will only get better as we move out of winter.
  4. This is the sting yes. I can only charge my octavia iV at 3.5 kW but with the small better I can get full charge from a socket at 7p/unit overnight. AFAIK 7kW is the maximum rating for a standard domestic install charger so I am limited to not more than 42kWh of charge at the cheap rate. If I were to opt for an EV I would have to pay the very high rates at public charging stations. This will not encourage the public to go green.. The cost of the EV is prohibitive for most people and you can't turn round and say "ah but it runs much more cheaply than petrol".
  5. Thanks.. I have been following your advice and things have improved 👍
  6. Thank you everybody ... your help is much appreciated. It's a learning curve!
  7. Octopus intelligent go offers 7p/unit 2330 - 0530 ... BUT it takes a while to get it all set up (took me 5 weeks and I was already with Octopus!!)
  8. I've not had that experience (ICE kicking in) but then I'm quite gentle trying to maximise my miles per charge. Do you know anything about SOC (state of charge)? I've seen so much online and I'm a bit confused but there seems to be advice out there not to charge above 80%? BUT is that for EV (not hybrid) , is it something to do with charging rate (I know it drops off for a big EV battery as the SOC rises), or what? Naturally there's nothing on this from Skoda. I can charge to 100% every night using my cheap tariff but am I damaging the battery. You would have thought that this information would be easily obtainable from the manufacturer but no ...
  9. It had occurred to me that I should try one long drive but I thought it a bit frivolous! Looks like I'll have to try that... Thanks for the suggestions
  10. Octavia iV SEL estate. Ordered November 2021, received December 2023. Apart from the horrendous problems that I have had with setting up with Octopus Intelligent Go and now my wallbox charger seems to have bitten the dust (so I’m onto the granny charger), my issue in this post is that I have been shocked/disappointed with the range on electric. I am retired and tend to potter around during the day, rarely more than 20 miles so my thinking was that I could easily cover this with a daily overnight charge on the cheap tariff = everybody wins, planet included. The reality seems to be rather different. Things haven’t looked right with charge level dropping far faster than I expected, so today I kept a close log on my mileage: Outside temperature 8C/9C Braking regeneration not changed from default Driving mode: normal Pure electric (not hybrid) No seat heaters on AC set to 20C Tyres ok No roof clutter (just the rails as delivered) Driving style: pretty mild/conservative Roads: town/suburban .. mostly 30mph limit .. no hold ups anywhere. Journeys today with time gaps: 1.7 miles (2 hours) 2.4 miles (30mins) 1.5 miles (2 hours) 1.1 miles (2 hours) 1.1 miles .. total 7.8 miles The first journey was in rain (wipers on), the last journey was in darkness (headlights on), otherwise no auxiliary power drain in the car that I can think of. So here’s the big question: 7.8 miles and battery went from 99% to 45%. Is this to be expected? This would mean a range of about 14 miles. Is that the realistic figure for this vehicle in winter?.. or could something be wrong e.g. the battery or some setting that I am missing? Any help/advice/reality check most welcome.
