  1. Morning all A final bump. Thanks to all who suggested possible solutions. Cheers Dave
  2. Morning Eddie Still in Warminster Cheers Dave
  3. Loks like the scapyard then, unless anybody wants it for 'spares or repair'. Shame really 'cos it was a well specified car. Cheers Dave
  4. Afternoon all I left the battery disconnected overnight, and reconnected it this morning. Things seem to have got worse. What I believe is the Exhaust Gas Recycling unit (in the inlet manifold on the front of the block, just above and to the left of what looks like an oil filter) has started to make a high pitched noise when the ignition is turned off. It stops if I unplug the connector on it (four wires). This seems to be confirmed in the engine readiness test in OBD mode which shows EGR system as a fail. This is getting ridiculous. I cant 'talk' to the engine, and the ABS controller seems to have gone into hibernation. Any suggetions would be appreciated. TIA Dave
  5. Morning G_tee None that I know of. The car has not been used since the original failure. Cheers Dave
  6. Afternoon all I tried a different battery with no improvements. I checked the main battery earth cable (as Phil suggested) and it looks OK with no sign of corrosion. I gave up on removing the alternator for testing. I had thought about removing the drive belt but it would appear that it sits under the cam belt, and I don't fancy running it with the alternator belt hanging next to the cam belt. Reconnected the battery to see more faults. The following LED's are lit : EML, Steering, ABS brake warning (flashes) ASR and EMS. Faults found: Engine 05705 DTC definition not found. ABS brakes Link error. Trans 18259 Powertrain data bus missing message from ABS controller. CAN gateway 00466 control module for steering column electronics (J527)* 01316 Sporadic 004 No Signal *Am I right in thinking this will reset itself after a short journey. It stalled after about five minutes on tickover. The 'missing message from ABS controller' seems to indicate that it's lost it's connection. Can anyone tell me where is it located please? Cheers Dave
  7. Afternoon Phil And do you see a battery warning light with the ignition on but the engine off? Yes. Everything behaves as you'd expect until the fault appears. I checked the alternator o/p and it does seem a bit spiky ( compared to the wife's car ) TBH I don't know if it's acceptable or not, so I think it's time to go to the local garage and get their electrician to have a look at it. Cheers Dave
  8. Morning Phil I'll have a look when I try the oscilloscope. Plan A is to see if there is a change of output when the fault appears. Cheers Dave
  9. That's interesting. One of possible causes suggested to me before the ECU was tested was diode failure in the alternator. It's charging OK, but I don't know how well the outputs are regulated. I have a mate with a hand held alternator tester. What was the problem, or did you just replace it? Meanwhile the ECU is back in. All the fuses have been removed, tested and replaced. All the earths (that I can find) have been cleaned. Reconnecting the battery caused a power steering alarm, which cleared 10 yards up the road, and an airbag failure alarm which I deleted. Started OK, all alarms out. After 11minutes on tickover - same alarms, same failure. When it's cooled down, I'l restart it and check the main engine/gearbox earth.
  10. Morning Phil I spoke to a local garage about the battery. They said that they would have done the same tests and drawn the same conclusions. Bear in mind that at the time, I thought the ECU was faulty. I dug out the paperwork and the battery is just over four years old, not six. I had the one it replaced and the alternator tested before I changed it. That cost £25 (in Devon  ) so I will probably replace it as the next step. Cheers Dave
  11. The words needle and haystack spring to mind. The ECU arrived today. Tomorrow, I'll disconnect the battery and check all the fuses before I re-fit it. There's one more test I can think of before the vehicle electician gets a call. One thing I had thought of is the oil pressure warning lamp. Is there a pressure monitor within the DSG box? Cheers Dave
  12. Morning Mags Put 'ECU repairs' into Google. Cheers Dave
