  1. Wow, I now get it! With cruise control at between 75 and 78mph, consumption is approximately 50mpg. It probably is even better, as my average mpg does include a small bit of town driving until I reach the motorway. That IS amazing. Impressive. With city driving, it ranges a lot depending on traffic. In any case, be gentle and you get good-ish figures, be a little aggressive and you get the local petrol garage guy happy. 1.4 TSI rocks.
  2. Oh Gerry, so I just have to get used to the vent reflection then... I ll be patient! Bottom line is the car is the best one can get for the money he spends. Full stop. (For a family man)
  3. 10 days ownership, my complains are these: - The cup holders are shallow and small. - (has to be verified) When the front two windows are a bit open and at city speeds, then there is a deafening wind noise, like a low hertz subwoofer, coming from the rear. Bad internal aerodynamics? - The bonnet handle is scary... if the battery is flat.... (which is one reason for you to have to open the bonnet!). - Some of the internal chrome (side air vent for example) reflects on the driver's mirror at certain time during a sunny day. All of the above do not affect my overall opinion about the Octavia, which really rocks! PS I still wonder how come a 2006 Astra automatically close the windows when you lock the car, but with the Octavia you have to long-press the lock button until the windows "manually" close.
  4. Totally agree. You appear ashamed of your car if you keep vrs but not skoda.
  5. Hi again - another question.... as I am new with the push button technology. In my old car, I would turn the key to turn on the ignition (position "2" or something) wait for some electronic checks to complete (i.e. for some yellow and red lights on the dashboard to turn off) and then turn the key further to start the engine. Moving to Octavia, there are two things I can do with the push button: 1 Brake and push the button to start the engine 2 Only push the button to turn on the ignition without starting the engine. Doing the second (engine not on) there is like a dozen lights that turn on, some of which turn off after a few seconds. Question is, before I start the engine, should I first turn the ignition on for any car's checks to complete, or I am not doing any harm when I just pop in, close the door and brake push start the engine straight away? ....... buffled.......
  6. "reporting" info after my trip onto the motorway. I averaged 5.2L/100km (54mpg) with mostly steady speed of 65mph on the motorway. On returning, I was more aggressive, average motorway speed @ 75mph and total trip average speed of 50mph, consumption 46mpg (6.2L/100km). Is that any good? Is it more, or less economic than an older 1.4 normally aspirated petrol engine? I guess I ignore the instant consumption, so I am never going to show it on the maxi dot anymore.
  7. Since refuelling, I am on 27mpg around town. Tomorrow will see on the open road! About the air-con. If in idle I have 0.6L/h (warm engine is less than the previously quoted figure) and when I turn on the air-con it rises to 1.3 L/h, then this is how I understand it: So, the air-con consumes 0.7L/h (I guess no matter the speed) If my average speed is 20km/h, then over an hour, I have driven 20km and my air-con consumed 0.7L. So, after 5h, I have driven 100km and my aircon consumed 3.5L This is 3.5L/100km of airconditioning within town!!!!! That's over 30% of the total petrol used. If I get my maths right, then the high consumption to date make sense. But, am I? 30%? Obviously, when at speed of 100km/h, then over these 100km (1 hour driving) the air-con has consumed 0.7L, which is less than 10% of the total petrol consumed. ------ @ Gerrycan: Bycycle?...... erm there is a "technical" problem. Even cycling for 3minutes during the Cypriot summer (37deg plus over three months) gets your clothes soaked from sweating.... Add to this the life risking factor (I buy you a pint if you don't see a driver holding a mobile at any point anywhere in Nicosia) - people crash all the time..... motorcycling is dangerous, cycling is absent. Yes I have dual zone climate control. And no, the Octavias don't do ACT engines unfortunately. Beach time tomorrow!! Good night from hot cyprus
  8. Delayed reply, but here I am. Thank you for all your posts. It's a DSG and always kept in the Normal mode. For the idle consumption without a/c on, it is 0.7-0.8l/h (with only the front LED's on). Is that a worry? (this figure is a few minutes after starting, maybe when the engine gets warmer, it drops?) I live in Cyprus, the home-work-home distance is a 10min drive, average speed less than 10miles/h. Air-condition is erm... almost always on, yeap. As for the mpg US and UK, I actually use the l/100km and I simply used Google to translate it to mpg so that you understand me. The actual figure is about 11L/100km, average speed 15km/h (so 9miles/h) and from stop, the initial (from 0 to about 20km/h) instant consumption reaches 40L/100km. Tyre pressure is as suggested by the manufacturer (the sticker on the car, 2.2/2.3bars, so 32-33PSI). Previous cars were 1.5 auto (sold) and 1.4 manual (kept as a second car), both normally aspirated. The main question here is if the 40L/100km (this is 7 UK mpg according to google) when accelerating from stop. Tomorrow is a motorway drive day to the beach, let's see the mpg there. PS Yes I meant cup (and not bottle) holder. I am Greek, some of you may know that we drink frappe coffee, something similar to Starbuck's frappuchino. So my cup is actually a usual glass and it barely fits in the cup holder (it does get in but not reaches the bottom of the cup holder so I am worried I may accidentally trip it). Octavia has the smallest cup holders of the cars I test drove!
  9. Hi. I have been a happy driver for 6 days now! Everything is brilliant on this car so far, except these too bits: 1) The bottle holder between the two front seats are narrow, quite narrower than the competition. 2) The reason that I am writing this post: Fuel "economy". I have the 1.4TSI 150BHP. Okay, yes, fuel economy is high at the beginning. But, how about 21-22mpg in city driving over this first week of ownership? Personally, I believe that figure is way too low mpg.. And there is this other thing: No matter how gentle I am accelerating from stop, the instant fuel consumption showing on the Maxi-Dot reaches 40 l/100km, which is 7mpg! Compare that to a 2005 1.4 (normally aspirated) petrol, which rarely drops below 14mpg during acceleration from stop. I really mean "no matter how gentle" I am with the throttle..... Is this normal? Is the average mpg ever going to rise to 28+ mpg in city conditions?
  10. Here is mine, the day we first met each other at the dealer's: http://prnt.sc/b9vfat And here she is waiting for me at my garage: http://prntscr.com/b9vx8b Not a vRS, but still I am 100% satisfied and happy with my car choice (wasn't an easy one) 1.4 TSI 150BHP hatchback. The top specs of Skoda Cyprus, quartz grey colous with beige interior. A bit different standard specs I guess, because I live in Cyprus, added a few extras too and here is the highlights that put a big smile on me: Light assist - works great - automated high beam works like a dream! LED lights front and rear - a must these days for a not a city-car. Electrical seats with external mirrors with memory function. This extra was decided litterally the last moment (due to cost) but I have absolutely no regret! Sharing with my other half our Octavia is not a struggle - the seats and the mirrors switch to my stored positions when I unlock the car with my keyfob! 17inch rims (my biggest concern, as I was not keen on these bigs alloys that would make the car stiffer). Ride is okay, really no worries. Of course it's not a soft car, but anyone who wants to upgrade from 16s to 17s should not worry about the difference in stiffness and ride. Steering wheel looks and feels definitely more premium that other cars in the class (Auris, Astra, Focus etc). Same goes for the whole dashboard. Boot........ okay no comments. It came with standard safety nets too - they look handy. Also the hooks around the boot look useful. I am 5f 8 (or something like that, whatever the 1.73m translates to) and the back area for the kids looks spacious as a playground! Loads of storage places and a big big plus is the air vents for the back seats (that are missing from the most car models of the class competition). An impressed owner so far, since Friday
  11. I have some options: strip that slides into the edge of the doors. You can cut to any required length. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6M-Black-Moulding-Trim-Car-Van-Door-Edge-Guard-Strip-Molding-Gloss-Protector-/191053238153?hash=item2c7ba90f89:g:xesAAMXQlgtS6uhG Stickers: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4x-Carbon-Black-Door-Edge-Protectors-Universal-Car-Van-Truck-UK-Post-/252028374702?hash=item3aae0fceae:g:Eb8AAOSwjVVVpsAU http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CAR-High-Glossy-4pcs-Door-Edge-Guards-Bumper-Protector-Molding-Metallic-Silver-/272247059668?hash=item3f633074d4:g:Ac4AAOSwf05XPHJr The other day I saw an auction for a clear thin sticker, but I cannot find it now. The problem with protecting the garage is that the risk of scratching the door remains everywhere else but my garage!! Though there is a concrete column I HAVE to cover with some fluffy stuff. Sorry for my english, you already may have understood is not my mother tongue.
  12. Hopefully I got the thread in the right place. I am wondering if anyone here has installed any kind of door edge protectors. I am kinda keen on buying some, I have small kids and stuff (plus on my old car I occasionally hit the doors on the wall of my parking place). There is different styles on ebay - one is the strip that you cut at required length and slide into the edge of the door, the other is the 3M stickers (around 10cm long). So, first, how ugly do they look (my Octavia is dark grey)? How well do they protect? Do they cause any (serious) damage to the paint? What type do you suggest? Thanks
  13. Yes, if I remember correctly. They came as standard from local Skoda dealer for trim I bought. They are called Denom and are the ones in the octavia brochure. You can't imagine how worried I am. The more I read through the forum, the less relaxed I get. What I really want to avoid is the harshness over speed bumps or imperfect asphalt, or uneven sewerage covers etc... From other topics, I am afraid I may have to change the shock absorbers or the dampers... Springs change is out of the question, because I don't want a lower ride, or go fast in corners. I am thinking of creating a topic about this, but first I have to wait and see how much stiffer my Octavia with the 17s will be compared to the test driven 16s, and second, check again older topics... Another strange thing with the Cypriot dealer is that I was told I cannot install rear view camera. That is something I can live with, though it would have been a nice touch
  14. Oh, all you lucky guys in the UK... I ordered my Octavia late January, was given a delivery time of 4 months, and I guess I have to be thankful if it doesn't get to be even more than 4 months. I live in Cyprus. How slow are the boats to get here?... Are we considered lower priority customers over here?
  15. Hi samuir. V6TDI, do you have rear torsion beam or Octavia RS?
  16. Hi there. Greetings for sunny Cyprus. I noticed this forum at the time that I was trying to make my mind about which car to buy. Initially was looking for a small-ish Station Wagon, for the size of the boot (i.e. Kia Ceed, Ford Focus, Hyundai i30 and Toyota Auris, all the wagons version). Then, after I was dissapointed with most of them, I had a look at the Skoda Octavia. But not the wagon, coz the hatchback was enough for my needs. It was then that I frequently found information on briskoda forums. I (obviously) bought in the end the Octavia (back in January). Was told it will arrive in Cyprus in 4 months time, so that should be around May (hopefully, coz I can imagine the sellers usually give promise they can barely keep). And so, with the time approaching, I signed up in this forum. The Octavia I bought is a dark grey (forgot the actual name) 1.4 TSI, DSG, I put quite a few extras on it (at the last day of ordering, I went for the electric seats for example). Things that my budget would not allow had I gone for the Auris, or waited for the Astra SW. So I am pretty happy with my choice. Only problem is the car that I tested drive was on 16in alloys, while the car that I bought comes with 17in.... The dealer over here said I could not downgrade to 16's....... and I am scared that the drive will be erm.. a bit annoying in town (firm, bumpy and noisy). Only time will tell. So, here I am then.
