  1. 1,000 miles on a tank full in a rapid with 55 L tank not as impossible as some claim above. But a lot of variables need to go your way over that distance. Good tailwinds, favourable traffic, all clear motorway and possibly a fair bit of drafting. I speak from experience, as after several attempts I managed 747 miles on 38.8 litres at an average speed of 48mph in a 1.0L Skoda Citigo (see Citigo forum) and this worked out at 87.64 MPG using brim to brim figures.
  2. I would have done almost anything to keep it, what a great alround "city" car. However, I already have 3 other cars! The Citigo was shared with my son to help out with his pcp payments. I would highly recommend the Citigo/Up/Mii to anyone needing a small economical car. 66mpg was my final average over the last 14,000 miles.
  3. Marginal gains and the final attempt. Having achieved 697 miles on a tank, and with limited time remaining before the citigo is returned, I had to give the "700" barrier one more attempt. The tires were inflated by an extra few psi, the route chosen to include maximum motorway driving, the tank filled with a few extra "clicks", maximum use of "pulse and glide" and lifting off the accelerator where possible and choosing a six day period with light or no fuel sapping headwinds! The results, fuel light on at 648 miles, 0 miles range indicated at 690, engine stopped at 747 miles! PID calculated 84.5 mpg, and the car was refuelled with 38.8 litres giving a calculated full-full figure of 87.6 mpg. one particular journey over the six days displayed 92.9 mpg over a distance of 172 miles! At the start of these challenges I really thought 600 miles was a push, and 700 near impossible ! To achieve 747 miles and 87.6 mpg from 38.8 litres shows this is an amazing car. Returning to the dealer in November with 16,000 miles, sad to see it go!
  4. Further to my post of June 2017, where I achieved a PID figure of 82.9 mpg over 321 miles.... I can now post an improvement ! during my final attempt at the 700+ challenge, I recorded an amazing 92.9 mpg over a distance of 172 miles. 92.9 mpg.....!
  5. Yes, some slow moving M25 traffic, two A1M night time diversions, road work lights and a touch of town driving! If you could find somewhere in the UK that was all motorway and no traffic...... It would be a breeze!
  6. Today I had the chance to complete the challenge. fuel light on at 589 miles. 0 miles range left at 630 miles. and a nerve biting wait, until the engine cut out at 697 on the PID, 698 on the odometer ! 2 to 3 miles short of target. Worthy of note was an average mpg on the motorway in the mid to high 80's, and only the high 70's today on "A" roads. Making 700 a definite possibility. From above, I needed to average 83.7 mpg over the tank and I achieved 83.5 ! The Monte Carlo gets handed back in November, not sure if there will be time for 1 more go .
  7. Having enjoyed reading and participating in the 500+ and 600+ threads, I posed the question over a year ago. Is 700+ miles possible in a citigo using the full 38 litre capacity full to empty. I felt after my 660 mile attempt in June 2017, that all we had to do was find another 40 miles! Dividing the required miles (700) by 38 litres full capacity (8.36 Uk gallons) meant needing to achieve 83.7 miles per gallon. Several attempts in the last year have seen a theoretical tank range of 650 to 700 miles, so with 50 miles more available in reserve I felt 700 was possible. These attempts unfortunately were thrown away due to traffic and requirements to use the car in the city. However, here are the results of my last attempt. Initial trip saw 497 miles driven, 140 miles available (combined =637) plus an estimated 60 miles reserve could mean 697 + ?
  8. From experience, low fuel light / red zone starts at 50 miles range left. That should give 45-50 motorway miles to zero. beyond zero, I have just driven a further 55 miles to an empty tank. So you could expect at least 90-100 miles range from fuel light on........ To an empty tank !
  9. Best tank full, PID showed 80.7 mpg, full-full calculated figure 79.0 mpg This was over a record breaking 660 miles, using exactly 38 litres of fuel. see the 600+ mile thread for full details.
  10. Time to hang up my "Hypermiling hat", but not before answering some questions on the 500+, 600+, best mpg, and how long to empty threads. The 2017 attempt used the A1, A1(M), M18, M25, M11, A11 and A47. Mid tank figures shown above (distance driven 321, driving range 325, giving possible range = 646 miles. the end results are as follows :- fuel light on at 560 miles, PID range was 50 miles remaining. 0 miles range at 605 miles fuel tank empty at exactly 660 miles. So I achieved 45 miles driving from fuel light on to 0 miles range indicated, and a further 55 miles after 0 indicated..... To an empty tank. ( fortunately, the engine died after I had given up hope of running out of fuel, and whilst turning into a Tesco petrol station.... Allowing me to coast to the pumps!) final PID numbers showed 80.7 Mpg, full to full calculated was 79.08 mpg. ( very similar)! Finally, on fuel tank size, when I filled up previously at 0 miles range.... I managed to put in 35 litres. This time filling a dry tank.... I managed to put in exactly 38 litres. I hope that answers most threads and questions. I guess maybe 1 question........ 700 +. ?
  11. Best mpg seen seen on the PID is current tank, 82.9 mpg over a distance of 321 miles. currently using "Road Trip" app to record full - full figures. As you can see my mpg over 6,304 miles is 64.79 mpg.
  12. so the 2017 (601 + miles) attempt has begun, a solid start but external factors and road conditions could still spoil this try.
  13. Further to my recent answer on the 500+ thread, I managed 601 miles on 35.0 litres back in September. Edinburgh to London plus M25, during a particularly hot spell so some air-con was used. The highest theoretical range seen so far on my PID was 429 miles driven, with a range to go of 205 = 634 miles. Avg. consumption showed 81.5 mpg at that
