  1. This is why all the advice is to start with a petrol Fabia and it's dead right! Integrating the dash and door looms was a lot of work. Pretty much every connector is different and/or in the wrong place and has to be chopped off and replaced with the Fabia one, and as already noted then there's the different illumination colours to deal with. The fact that the Ibiza donor car was a 3 door didn't help either... Some stuff fits straight on, like the headlight connectors - but then you find that the terminal positions are different so even that isn't plug and play. Thank God for the Erwin wiring diagrams!
  2. Thank you! My problem was that the VRS bulkhead connector is different to the Ibiza one so I had to move the 'join' further towards the back of the car, and of course I had to change the instruments anyway because I needed the 8000rpm tacho. I only worked out that I didn't have the coolant level sensor wiring after I had put the dash back, which is why the connector on the expansion tank is embarrassingly naked! Whilst I'm in confession mode I haven't got a washer fluid level warning either because that wasn't present in the Ibiza loom, but that was a conscious decision rather than an oversight!
  3. You're very welcome mate... A lot depends on what you want the car to be - I wanted 'factory' not 'track day' which meant a lot of extra grief because I wanted to keep all the stuff that usually gets binned on a track car, but whatever you have in your mind's eye the time you are spending now just gathering info is well worth it. My car is just one of many ways to do this swap and I certainly don't claim it's the best. What I can say though is that it works. However - each to his own, that's the whole point of modified vehicles! I was advised more than once to flog my VRS and buy a decent Ibiza FR. Errm... let me explain...
  4. Understand all that but even the FR route is not easy if you want everything to work. Like you I set out with the desire to push my limits, which I certainly did bearing in mind the last engine swap I did only required a gas axe, a custom propshaft and bit of bottle (yes I am that old!) Like most of the other 1.8T Fabias mine is basically an Ibiza FR that looks like a Fabia. As Trevor says, the oily bits are not difficult if you do it this way, which leaves plenty of time to suss out the electrics and electronics. I used the Ibiza loom and spliced it to the Fabia rear end loom next to the drivers seat. I also used the Ibiza HVAC unit and bodged the controls into the Fabia dash which works fine. The door looms are a bit of a game, but most of the other stuff like the stalks and instruments fit without too much messing about. One thing that is fiddly is the dash/switch illumination which I elected to do in red as it was less work than green, but it still takes a bit of time. In the end I got it all working including the locking, the windows, the elecric mirrors, the climate control etc. I realise you know what your at, but I'm pretty sure this would be a nightmare if you have different sources for the component parts however good you are at reading a wiring diagram and using VCDS. Even so there was a lot of stuff I could not have done without the help I had from the top team that is Jabbasport (apart from the engine build) particularly the immobiliser gubbins. Best of luck whatever you decide...
  5. There's no build thread as I figured it's been done enough times already, but if there's enough interest I can put a spec and brief history together?
  6. #243. Owned since nearly new. Now being rebuilt as a 1.8T after c90K hard miles. Previous spec: Jabba hybrid turbo, flowed head, custom intercooler, steel flywheel, sachs clutch, Quaife diff, Milltek exhaust. Weitec suspension, 17" Dynamics, Jabba rear ARB, 330mm brakes. 'Clean' map by Kevin Glover - 220bhp with no smoke.
  7. Gave up with this one lads. Everything is possible I am sure, but sometimes, as one is often reminded on this forum, 'A man's gotta know his limitations' We'll live with the idiosyncrasies for now and fit a Parrot...
  8. I can only agree - the response from the various CANbus emulator guys has not been sufficiently confident to make me risk shelling out more dosh, although there is an outfit called auto polar who make some kind of BAP/DDP translator, but not for this application as far as I can tell. The other problem is that even if successfully translated, the car probably doesn't have half the sensors that the head unit is expecting to see, so as the man says 'there'll be other issues'! I am toying with the idea of returning the unit to the eBay vendor who is adamant that the only problem is that 'the car needs recoding by a Skoda dealer' (oh how we chuckled) and trading it for a RNS310, but this might just be more grief. Let me be guided by those more knowledgeable than I... I'd prefer to fit a Skoda head unit rather than an aftermarket one. It must work in the 2008 Fabia (obviously). It MUST have Bluetooth phone integration, and satnav would be very nice but only if it is 7 digit postcode. DAB is clearly off the menu (glad I spent a load of time and money on that amplified aerial!) and anything else like SD cards and music streaming is merely nice to have not must have. I am in the process of upgrading my VCDS dongle to HEX-USB+CAN so any required recoding will be within my grasp (with more help from this forum no doubt). The RNS310 clearly was available on this car, but there are many different versions it seems, and bizarrely phone integration does not appear to be present on many that are offered for sale. What should I fit? Or is aftermarket the only safe option? All assistance very gratefully received...
  9. Thanks for all the feedback. It all seems to boil down to whether some kind of CANbus simulator is going to do the trick or not. Thanks to Rustynuts I now understand that the on/off problem, and it seems feasible that a black box of some kind can trick the unit into thinking it has a proper CANbus connection so that this aspect at least works as it should. However, there is also the issue of the clock and the km satnav, plus the main problem which is that the phone integration doesn't work, and it's harder to see how a CANbus 'trick' is going to fix that lot. I agree with Rustynuts that it's highly unlikely that the car and the radio can be persuaded to talk to each other, so I suspect it comes down to how comprehensively the RNS unit can be fooled by an add-on item. I am in correspondence with Kufatec, the supplier recommended by B1ackb1rd, so I'll let you know how I get on.
  10. The unit stacks up as a 315 with integral Bluetooth according to all the checks I can make (mac address etc) so I'm reasonably sure it's genuine, but as you say, stickers can be changed! The fact that it has DAB on board confirms it's a high spec unit too. There is plenty of stuff out there about 'enabling Bluetooth' on the car itself before it will work on the head unit, so I'm hoping that if they can be made to talk to each other all will be well. I'll let you know!
  11. I think I'm with you on that! This will have to fix the phone to be worth the dosh...
  12. Thanks for that B1ackb1rd. Sounds like you have some very relevant experience of the issue. I'll get onto Kufatec first thing. This car doesn't have a Maxidot display so thats' one problem I don't have to worry about. Have you fitted one of these Canbus adaptors or did the RNS315 work OK apart from the on-off issues?
  13. Hi guys, new here so apologies if this has already been covered and I can't find it. I'm trying to integrate a Skoda Amundsen RNS315 into my daughter's 58 plate Fabia. It's a late head unit with bluetooth on board, and mostly it works, but the phone integration doesn't and it displays a few other quirks courtesy (I think) of the ECU not knowing it's there. I thought I had all the kit I needed to fit it properly, but it seems I was a bit previous on that! I have installed a new amplified DAB/FM aerial, a pukka VAG phone mic that snaps into the roof console, plus a GPS aerial. Not the quickest job in the world, but all went together fine. Getting the right fakra connectors and converters was a bit of a nightmare, but other than that no problem. The radio, CD and SD card sound fantastic even on the stock speakers, DAB works great, satnav works, but... the phone button does nothing apart from mute the speakers, the clock is wrong and the satnav is in km. The latter two issues cannot be manually changed, they are synched to the car by the ECU if the RNS 315 is properly integrated which clearly mine isn't. There are a couple of other items of weird behaviour too... The unit does not switch off when the ignition key is removed, but it does turn itself off after about half an hour's driving. This suggests that the power wiring is wrong, but the loom looks completely standard and the old radio/CD behaved properly. I have the full VCDS software, but it doesn't seem to allow access to any of the relevant modules and Ross-Tech tech support were, let us say, disappointing. Does anyone know how to get this unit to work, or is the car simply not new enough to accept it? This was Ross-Tech's take on it, but I'm not convinced. The vehicle scan is shown below - any guidance or advice gratefully received. I only have a hex bus connector for my VCDS software (fine for my own 2007 Fabia VRS SE) but I'm wondering if I need to upgrade to a CANbus interface for the MkII Fabia?
