  1. Thanks for your advice chaps. Have just found Mobil 10w 40 for under £30.00 for 5 litres http://www.carparts4less.co.uk/cp4l/c/Skoda_Fabia_1.2_2011/p/accessories-engine-oil/engine-oils/engine-oil/5w40-engine-oil/?521772121&0&cc5_248 Will get that for starters then look around when I'm out and about for something cheaper. If I look for the spec 5W 40 FS (VW502 00) Awayoffski it will be good to use no matter how cheap it is. To be honest with the oil checks I hold my hands up, I blame the Japanese cars I have driven for years . It made me complacent as they used so little oil. I never checked the levels after the service as the garage used comes with a good recommendation (will do in future). I'm assuming they replaced the old with new oil to the correct level. The mileage at service was 40,500 and when I checked oil yesterday it was below the minimum level and mileage was 42,704 ( I make that 2,204 miles to go from full to dangerously low). I had only been out on a local trip of around 3 miles when I checked the oil on return. So I guess it was nearer operating temperature than stone cold. Excuse my ignorance but is there much of a difference when checking oil hot or cold? Being a layman or fool delete as necessary , the oil when hot would be more runny than cold but will that affect the level?. Having overfilled the oil on a previous car I tend to add it a bit gingerly now to avoid that problem. I have made a note to check the oil now once a month and stock up on oil. Will follow your advice YS53 and keep a litre or two in the car so I never get caught short. Thanks again Update Have just read owners manual and I quote: The oil consumption may be as much as 0.5 L per 1000 km (621miles) depending on your style of driving and the conditions under which you operate the vehicle. So as I have driven around 12,000 miles since ownership that equates to around 10L of oil based on those figures. I have only bought 4l of Castrol Edge as mentioned, plus whatever amount the garaged put in on service. So that based on the owners manual is well within bounds phew. Just using the oil I saw for £30 will save a few quid and I'm sure I can get the price down further with a bit of shopping around.
  2. Hi All I have a 60 plate Fabia 1.2 tsi estate 105 with just shy of 43k on the clock. Had the car since January 2016 and I cannot fault it but the oil usage is surprising me having had Japanese cars in the past. I am topping up every 2-2.5 thousand miles. Is this normal it seems a hell of a lot to me The car has been well looked after with 1 owner and just under 31k on the clock and 5 main dealer stamps when I got it. I had it serviced in November 2016 with full oil change etc with 40,500 on clock. Yesterday I checked oil and it was very low So topped up pretty sharpish with the castrol edge I got last year, £50 a pop at my local garage and mileage is 42,704. The car isn't leaking oil just guzzling it for fun it seems,at this rate I will be buying 4 litres of oil every year excluding the full oil change on it's annual service. I can see my old Mitsubishi and Civic 1.8 vti at me. They barely used a drop. I'm keen to hear the thoughts of members who have had similar issues or is this just the way it is with this engine?
  3. Cheers Fab Estate I think so as he had a similar problem on an Alfa Romeo and his hunch is the bell-crank is the problem. I have used this guy for around 5 years now and he is very good, as honest as they come and very reasonable . Gonna get him to have a look next week hopefully. Out of interest what was mileage on yours when the gear linkage started to fray?
  4. Have just picked up a 2008 Fabia 2 estate 1.4 tdi PD2. It has 115,00 on the clock with 1 lady owner and FSH with 11 stamps in the book, and most of the receipts for all work carried out it is apparent no expense was spared and anything that needed doing was done to the car. We are having difficulty selecting the right gear particularly when changing down 3rd to 2nd, locating 1st gear and reverse can also be difficult to locate (a bit hit and miss). My local trusty mechanic has just given it a full service as well as new timing/cambelt water pump etc, He mentioned the gears being stiff and has lubed it up, ( i think that was what he said) and he thinks it is 50% better than it was, suggesting it could be the bell-crank. I wonder it anyone others owners have had a similar problem.
  5. Thanks for your thoughts chaps. Mine was never going to be as simple as yours spember mine has rolled back before I even lay a hand on the door. Like Tyredcyclist mentioned mine seems to be a worn mechanism, will have to have a look when I get the chance. Must admit I don't fancy buying a whole new cover. The search goes on.
  6. I wonder if anyone can help at all. I am looking for the Part number for the retractable luggage cover to fit a 2008 Fabia Estate 1.4 tdi. It seems to be a common problem that with age they will not stay closed. Have seen sellers on ebay offering Fabia Hatchback parcel repair kits as pictured. Only £10 but not sure if this is what I need. This seems to be a cheaper fix than getting a whole new replacement cover. If anyone has had this problem or can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated
  7. Looking to spend around £2500 too. Have seen a couple for sale around that price one has 81,000 on clock 1 owner FSH the other 111,000 2 owners I think. The car is for my wife who is a community nurse so good mpg, cheap tax, large boot and reliability are key. She also gets paid generously for mileage covered. We already have a 1.2 tsi 105 SE plus estate. That has got us hooked on the Fabia. Personally never been a fan of diesels but in this instance I think that is what will serve her best.
  8. m8t, I think you're right on that one I didn't really fancy the Greenline version for that reason.
  9. Well I think I may have dodged a bullet on this one. Rang Skoda Dealer who supplied the car new and also Skoda Uk. The Main Dealer history upto late 2016 turned out to be a service 1 year on from new in 2011 and then another 3 weeks later, something to do with a temp sensor / inspection service? At this point I rang seller who was due to call me back. He never did. The search goes on I'm now considering the 3 pot 1.4tdi P2 estate. Have seen a couple advertised on 08 plate with 90 to 110k on the clock both 1 owner with service history. Any experience / thoughts on this engine particularly the mileage they can do if well looked after would be appreciated. My thinking here is no DPF, £30 road tax. I know its only 80bhp but that's not a problem. Thanks again for all the advice
  10. Wow Some mileage! Thanks James I think I will sleep on it and speak to Skoda tomorrow. Now beginning to tot up what I will need to spend on car to get it ship shape. Thanks again all for your advice.
  11. Me thinks this could be a can of worms, see previous reply to Offski
  12. Hi Offski Thanks for the pointers, I believe DPF has been done I am hopefully going to find this out tomorrow when I ring Skoda. I'm very much on the cautious side as I haven't yet looked at the car in the flesh as its 200 odd miles from me. Positives so far Good MOT history Car looks well kept (apart from couple of cosmetic issues) Skoda history til Late 2016 Low asking price Negatives Low asking price Current seller only had car 6-7 months (Alarm bells ringing) Service book is blank? I guess it could be lost hence my call tomorrow to Skoda dealer who supplied and serviced car. Sounds like it needs Timing Belt and 2 new tyres - £450 ish I guess Maintenance in it's last 8,000 miles - going to try and get details of local garage who have done work in last 7 mths and call them before I set off on a 400 mile round trip. If I'm being honest I'm sitting on the negative fence unless phone calls tomorrow swing me back the other way.
  13. Thanks for the info hutchysrs50. You have now led me to the next question EGR Valves when you say go through them what sort of mileage / time span are we talking here.
  14. Hi All Newbie here. I found this site when before buying my first Skoda last year. Big thanks to all as the information and knowledge here helped me avoid buying a lemon. Finally decided to join today as I'm now looking to buy a 2nd Fabia for my wife and being honest I'm not very mechanically minded. Hope I can contribute in a small way.
  15. Hi All Newbie here who has just joined 15 minutes ago looking for some advice on 2010 Fabia 1.6 tdi cr engine. I appreciate my questions have probably been asked several times over but having a bit of difficulty navigating the site. 1) If well maintained/serviced - How many miles are the engines good for? 2) How much would you expect to pay (all in) to fit a new timing belt (not main dealer) The reason I ask is I'm considering buying the above car with 131,000 on the clock. Full Skoda service history up to 124k ish. Many thanks in advance.
