Thanks for the detailed tips, Jorgeminator... not sure I'd have had confidence it was coming off otherwise, feels like it's just going to bend the plastic and slip out. Absolutely awful design.

Quite surprised I can't find anything by googling or searching on here... maybe I'm just being thick! How do you use the "manual" key inside the fob to unlock (and ideally start!) a MK4 Octavia? My Mk3 had a little slot you could access by pulling the door handle, but can't find any such thing on this one. The fact that there is a key inside the fob makes me think it must be possible though?!
