In July I bought a used car, a Nissan Qashqai, from a main dealer who wanted £450 for GAP insurance. I happily told him that I would not be paying that, and vowed to sort out some insurance online. Of course, real life got in the way, and after just 10 days of owning the car an idiot driver went straight across a crossroads and into the side of me, writing the car off. Due to my personal circumstances, I had purchased the car on an HP deal and long story short, I ended up £3k out of pocket.
Today I took delivery of a 2018 Skoda Superb Estate SE L Executive, and tonight, before I go anywhere, I am buying GAP Insurance.
Given that I do a high mileage (25K-30k a year), I simply feel that the £178 premium is more than worth my peace of mind.
