  1. Ok thanks a lot. That sounds like a really useful suggestion. But is header tank = "expansion tank"? Bc that's actually brand new.
  2. Hello all. Need some council... also perhaps interesting case. Would much appreciate another voice to the one in my head! referring to this post. Basically they fixed the waterpump, £500 but then the car is still losing water but only at high speeds. Drove the length of Wales in it on A-roads, no problem then when it went on the M53 for an hour, the light came on and the water tank was empty. Obviously the fear is that is the head gasket. If it's that I think I just want to give up on it. Or put K-seal in and see what that does. The dealers don't know what is wrong with it at all. They've pressure tested it, driven it round at high revs, it's not losing water now. They said the only thing they'd try is the thermostat. Quoted £100 to get it fitted, flush it a few times (some rust in the engine I think from previous owner running it w a leak). If car had been run at high temperatures that could have caused the thermostat to break and would be putting the engine under pressure at high temperatures, then it could lose water through the core/cap. Oil etc show no sign of core damage. It does seem like the expansion tank seems v pressurized even at normal usage. After that, if that doesn't work, they said get rid of it. I just bought it. So that's actual doom! I think I'll do thermostat and flush it, if it still leaks put K-seal in, and then if that doesn't work, sell it on. Any advances on that?!
  3. Update - There is still a coolant leak. Had the pump and belt replaced, along with some other stuff that was rattling around --> £500 But when the car goes on the motorway it looses water quite rapidly. Like, a litre in a few hours. Car is actually running great though. And oil/exhaust are fine. Anyway, I'm guessing (because feeling doomed) it's a blown gasket or crack or something? Although there's no other symptoms of that. Going to take it to the dealer to check their water pump isn't faulty. If they don't find anything wrong with the pump, do you think I could try K-seal or Silver Seal? Got another long drive on Friday.
  4. Yeah good point. They said the pads are at 85%. Is that awful, or got some more miles? Keen to spread the cost really. And tbh, I do want to learn to see them and change them myself. I'll take a look next week. If anyone has advice on rear suspension drop links and brushes, looks like they will need doing soon too. Uneven tyre wear at the back. Will look others' up on here later on.
  5. Thanks. Yep was the waterpump, so cambelt also. And the drive belt had started making a weird noise by the time I got it there. A few other things need doing according to the report, which I had done by the dealer in the end, as they're close and trying to get my wife to trust me again after buying a bit of a shonky motor! -- fair dos they've done a thorough job and given a good price on the labour, after hearing my sob story. Can't afford them to do everything though... Looking online now for rear drop links, front break pads and disks, front brushes (or is it best to just do the entire arms?). Could you advise, what are the trusted makes/sources for these Skoda parts? Just get the genuine ones? Or are there trusted alternatives. And how many of these could I expect to do myself - a beginner, but I can wrap my head around most things eventually, and my old man said he'd show me some stuff... First job: The disks and pads seem simple enough to replace myself, right?
  6. Hello. First post. Long time lurker and appreciator of these forums. Bought a used 2009 Octavia estate 1.9tdi Yesterday (!) to change up from my old faithful 2003 Octavia 1.9sdi. Really like the car, except it has immediately sprung (or already had) a coolant leak. Former owner isn't replying to messages, unsurprisingly. Symptoms: light on at end of long drive, and coolant tank empty again after refilling sitting in street all night. Refill again, but coolant is empty after a day driving around. So it's pretty severe. Two times I've checked after its been sat still there's a little pool of coolant under the car. Under bonnet theres signs of coolant also. On metalwork etc. All on right-hand side under bonnet. Is it definitely the water pump? (£££!) Any way for me to diagnose it myself if so? Do these symptoms in themselves suggest anything one way or the other? Thinking it's not head gasket bc it is leaking when static. Not sure whether to take to dealer or use my local garage who are usually pretty good to be fair. Any advice appreciated!
