  1. Hi, I have the same year and engine but in tsi plus guise so with satnav not cruise control. I have had 3 years of trouble free motoring, just a new battery this Winter. Sorry to say on this forum but I wanted an Audi A5. Then I realised I could get the Octy for literally half the money for the same engine, that was that. I found a very low mileage car, on 40k now and love driving it. I am a slow careful driver most of the time but when I put my foot down there is plenty there! Just be aware of the chain issues and enjoy.
  2. Tom, I believe it is engine measuring block 93 that is relevant for timing chain stretch on these TSI engines. See the post below and the video which is for similar VW / AUDI engines.. I recently bought an OBDEleven scanner which has shown my value as -0.66 degrees which I am very happy with ! I know I should get the tensioner done but it looks like very little stretch for now. https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/432610-timing-chain-vcds-measurement/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtTOGPo4IsE
  3. Those prices sound good to me. I've not heard of much less that 800+ quid including the chain where I am (West London / Middx). Has anyone had this done in my area and can recommend the garage ? Otherwise can you guys further North having it done let us know if the job was a good un and if you did need the chain too. Mine on 37K so hoping the chain is ok.
  4. I admit I do drive like a granny at times but on a long trip I get mid 40s to 50 mpg and recently on a weekend in the Chilterns it did actually reach 60 mpg with a bit of cruising down hill. Maybe my maxidot is faulty! My partner has a 1.4 TSI which I also drive but I can't get as much displayed mpg from that as the 1.8 TSI Yes, I do put my foot down sometimes and love the engine. Turbo cars for me in future I think.
  5. Hi, You really need to read the sticky at the top : 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TSI engine failures. It may make you think again about the 1.8TSI, unless it has had the chain tensioner updated.
  6. Since I may rely on the footage in the event of an accident / insurance claim, it makes sense to me to check that it is working periodically. You obviously have faith in the reliability of dash cams. Maybe I read too many reviews of dodgy dash cams before I made my purchase!
  7. Dan, Thanks for your reply. Yes I was interested at how a claim may be affected by lack of footage if a discount had been applied for a dash cam. My cam is not hard wired so I wouldn't want a discount as I can't guarantee it will be plugged in and recording. Even if connected there is no guarantee that the correct footage will be recorded / saved. I suspect not many people check the footage from their cams on a regular basis. A bit like automatic computer backups: most of us assume they are all working in the background but few check regularly and attempt a trial recovery from backup, Even IT professionals are guilty of this.
  8. Another question for Dan: What happens in the event of a claim when there has been a dash cam failure, either camera or user, resulting in no footage of the accident?
  9. I went for a budget cam for my first venture into the dash cam market: a Spytec A118C, about £45 It has a capacitor, not a battery which may make it last longer as I believe it is often the batteries that cause the demise of these dash cams. Footage is good quality and you can clearly see number plates. No issues in the 3 months I have had it. It is very small and discreet compared to many. I didn't want it to be too obvious and attract thieves. You can also add a GPS module. Given the number of idiots driving around these days I am much happier knowing that I may have some evidence in case of an accident. As a bonus it took some great footage of scenic driving on a recent Lake District holiday, not something I thought I would use it for. There are reviews of a number of dash cams on you tube that may be useful.
  10. Hi, I'm looking at getting OBDeleven to check the state of my timing chain (mark 2 F/L). Does anyone know if the equivalent of the VCDS measuring blocks are avalaible in OBDeleven. It is specifically block 93 that seems to be relevant in helping to diagnose a stretching chain and need for replacement (the dreaded tensioner issue) Any information would be welcome.
  11. If October 2012 good chance that you have latest tensioner based on below from another thread. Not heard of this one failing but someone may correct me. 06H 109 467N >> 26.04.2010 06H 109 467T 27.04.2010 >> 29.08.2011 06H 109 467AB 30.08.2011 >> 04.03.2012 06K 109 467K 05.03.2012 >>
  12. Since my 1.8 TSI now has over 30K miles on the clock I am thinking more about the timing chain tensioner issue and what action to take. I am wondering how many people there are out there in a similar situation who have not yet had a problem and taken no preventative action ? Rather than spend the quoted 800 quid to get the tensioner etc. changed, I would like to find out the state of my current chain. Anyone out there successfully monitoring their chain / tensioner either by manual inspection or VCDS? Does anyone knows if cheaper VCDS alternatives such as Carista or ODBeleven can access and report the engine measured groups (93 is the relevant one I believe)?
  13. Thanks. Thinking of the VCDS check and / or the manual inspection of the tensioner before I splash the cash.
  14. Hi, I've been lurking here getting lots of useful info for a year or so since getting my 1.8 TSI. I came from 15 years ownership of a Toyota Celica which was a great car and never let me down but time for a change. I have to say I love the Octavia and the power from the turbo. The Celica was good to drive but you did have to rev it hard, which isn't the case with the Octavia. More than a bit concerned about the chain tensioner issue but taken no action yet as low mileage when bought (24k). Now 32K and a bit more worried....
