Fabia Mk2 1.2 Petrol (2012) Normally very reliable. However in the past few days it has twice suddenly had a problem starting. One morning the cranking was heavy and slow, and the engine failed to fire. I was in a hurry, so did not investigate but used jump leads to start from another vehicle. Immediate success. As I was going some distance I took the jump leads with me – just in case – and a good thing I did. I was away for a few days, and had no further problem with the starting until yesterday when I stopped at a Service station. After a 15 minute break I returned to the car and had a recurrence of the same cranking/starting issue. Fortunately a motorist came over and offered his car as a source for my jump leads, and I was able to complete my journey. After this second occasion I found that the clock and trip meters had re-set to zero, although the total mileage remains intact. There is obviously something amiss. Yesterday I put a multimeter on the battery terminals and had a healthy 12.55 volts. This morning (after 16hrs) the reading was down slightly to 12.45v, and the same between battery terminals and between battery to engine-block. The acid level indicator is black. Car starts OK, but I can’t trust it. . . .
The terminal connections seem tight. The acid level indicator is black.
Can anyone suggest what I should check next, please? Thanks for looking.
