  1. Forgot to update this, soldered the wires back together last weekend and shrink wrapped them all up neatly. Cleared the error code and all has been well since. That code reader was brilliant, a very handy thing to have!
  2. Thanks, you've both been most helpful! I can't do much at the moment as I'm going to be away for the weekend but I will have a go next week.
  3. Ok, found the little devil and instantly saw the problem too... One of the wires that goes to the sensor had broken, looks like they have been soldered together at some point so no idea what's happened there. While I was trying to get some of the electrical tape off to get a proper look, the second one came apart too. I can solder them together easy enough but the main problem is that they've broken about two inches from where the wire disappears into the loom, not much space to work. Another problem (possibly), is that I'm not sure which wire is which now, or does it not make a difference? Thanks!
  4. Well that was easy, fault code is: 17571 which I believe is the fuel temperature sensor. I've had a quick look online but I'm not 100% sure where that is located. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Many thanks
  5. Thanks Benjaminalski, that's good to know. To be honest it only gets done at 6k because that's what I do in a year, if I did 9k then it would get serviced at that. I've always done the servicing myself on previous cars but this one had full service history when I bought it and I just carried it on.
  6. Scanner ordered (first link above) so I'll will let you know what I find. Car is now parked up until I know what's wrong and I'm using my girlfriends Kia
  7. I have my oil changed and car serviced every year at around 6k miles. No idea what oil they use though, I didn't realise it was so important. It's a respectable garage so I would hope they would know what to put in it!?
  8. Thanks again I'm at work at the moment but luckily close to home on this occasion. I should be able to use my girlfriends car for the rest of the week so I might try and buy one and see if I can track down the fault. At least if I know something I will be more confident about going to a garage without getting fleeced. Do issues like this often resolve themselves, i.e. caused by the bump, or is it most likely more serious?
  9. Thanks both, car seems to be running fine. I was driving through some road works and went over a raised section, only 15-20 mph but quite a jolt. Few seconds later I noticed the light. No idea if this had anything to do with it or just when I noticed. So the basic ones will just give an error code? Are they still worth having to pinpoint the issue? Sorry what's a DTC? Do you think I would be better of just taking it to a garage?
  10. Well I don't seem to be having much luck at the moment, just as soon as I have fixed my slow starting (although I'm still not sure it is 100% fixed) I now have an engine warning light on the dashboard I've had a look online and apparently it is the engine emissions warning light, although it looks like a little yellow engine to me. I think my first step will be to buy a fault code reader but I have literally no idea what to get. Would any of the following be suitable for a 2006 BLT Fabia VRS? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VAG-VW-Audi-Skoda-Seat-com-CAN-BUS-Fault-Code-Reader-Scanner-diagnostic-tool/222872111526?hash=item33e43689a6:g:Jw0AAMXQ8ABRl5mu https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-Car-Fault-Reader-Code-Scanner-Diagnostic-Tool-OBD2-II-VS890-Reset/253469049132?epid=28016030177&hash=item3b03eec12c:g:MUkAAOSwfglZzNG2 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-VW-SEAT-SKODA-CAR-FAULT-CODE-READER-ENGINE-SCANNER-DIAGNOSTIC-RESET-TOOL/252418969621?hash=item3ac557d015:g:kMwAAOSwGYVXCLJJ What kind of things can cause this light to come on? Many thanks in advance for any help, after five years trouble free motoring it seems my little Fabia is going through a rough patch!
  11. Hi Stuart, I have actually just fixed mine today, it was the earth cable from the starter motor. I took the battery off and took it back to Euro Car Parts where I bought it, and they tested it and said it was fine. Left the car with my old man while I went off on holiday and took his car. He took it to car electrical specialist who suggested the earth. Dad's an engineer so he had cable and ends so we have just made up a cable from the engine to the main earth on the body, behind the battery. The actual cable is buried beneath the battery tray so this is a temporary solution until we can do it properly, most likely in the summer. You can test it with jump leads I think, connect one from the negative to the engine and see if it is any better. Good luck
  12. Hi, Does any one have a PDF copy or link to the Octavia 2014 (March) brochure. I can find the 2013 one but it does not feature the 4x4 models and the 2015 one but it all changes to newer SE-L spec etc. Thanks
  13. Sorry for the thread revival. I managed to get some videos of the car starting, can anyone have a look and let me know your thoughts? I'm starting to think it might be the battery. Hope this works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYTyUCKh5fw&feature=youtu.be https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXCgFwF86fg&feature=youtu.be Thanks
  14. Thanks, anyway to know for sure if it's the glow plugs? Would a garage be able to see a fault code if one or all of them were failing? The car seems to drive fine and it starts quick when warm, it just struggles when cold. Are they really difficult to remove? I've heard horror stories...
  15. Thanks grotesk, that's really helpful! I've read that the newer engines don't have the low down slug of torque that the PD engines have, so although faster, don't always feel as quick. It's a shame that they don't make a Fabia VRS anymore, even if they fitted the standard 2.0 tdi 150 I'm sure it would fly, down the road and out of the showrooms!
  16. My car seems to be having difficulty starting at times. It began a few months back with what I would describe as a slight pause between cranking and firing. Recently though it will actually crank over several times before starting and has on occasion sort of spluttered into life. I had a new battery fitted last year and it seems to crank over ok so I don't think this is the cause. The car is serviced every year and is used for small journeys in the week and long journeys several times a month. It is worse when cold and when it has been left for a while. I've read that it could be the glow plugs or injectors but I'm not sure which, so I'm just looking for a little help in diagnosing before I take it to a garage. Any help greatly appreciated!
  17. Almost certainly second hand, most likely 2-4 years old. DDC sounds like a good bit of tech though, definately something to look out for. I seem be be changing my mind on a daily basis at the moment from 'get the sensible, comfy one' to 'the VRS looks so much better and imagine how much more fun it will be'. I'm sure once I get to test drive them it'll be a bit clearer in my head!
  18. I've only measured my actual consumption on two occasions, the first was a near 1000 mile round trip to Holland - mostly motorway, definitly not driving with economy in mind - where the car avaraged 54mpg. The second was over the course of a month when I was working about 15miles from home, mostly B roads and small villages. Driving normally I achieved around 57 / 58 mpg. Car is a 2006 Fabia VRS, completely standard as far as I can tell.
  19. That's two votes for the VRS over the standard car. I have to say I'm leaning towards the 150 though, I'm just not sure that I can put up with the firmness of the VRS if it is anything like my current Fabia. I don't really drive fast, I have a motorbike for that, I mostly just like the power for effortless overtakes and the abillity to make decent progress without ringing the car's neck. I kind of feel like all of that extra tech on the VRS would be wasted on me. I suppose I will have to test drive them and see what's what. Can anyone comment on how the two cars might feel compared to a standard Fabia VRS? Slower, faster, more linear acceleration? What about MPG?
  20. Thanks Sasha, so the VRS with the multilink suspension actually rides better than the standard car? I would have thought that it was a much more firm harsh ride because of the lower, firmer springs. How does the VRS cope over potholes and speed bumps etc?
  21. Hi folks, I'm new to the forum so I hope this is in the right place. I have owned my 2006 Fabia VRS for four years now, this year I will be looking to replace it with something a little bigger and a little newer. I definitely want to stick with a Skoda - my car has been absolutely faultless - and have pretty much settled on a mk3 Octavia. My natural choice would be to go for another VRS as I love the effortless power of mine, but I am starting to find it a bit 'jiggly' and uncomfortable especially on our deteriorating roads. I have done a lot of research so I feel like I'm pretty clued up, especially concerning weight and power-to-weight differences between the VRS and standard 2.0 tdi 150 cars. What I am looking for though is a little insider knowledge on how the two cars might stuck up against a stock mk1 VRS. For example, would a standard manual 150 feel slow compared to my car, would the VRS feel much faster? How would the comfort and road noise of each compare to my car? What about the MPG? Any info on how the three cars would stack up against each other would be greatly appreciated before I think about test drives ect in the spring. Thanks
