  1. SuperRaj - Better chance of finding this information if you can supply the engine code and production date, which is normally encoded in the vehicle documentation and a sticker on the timing chain cover. From this you can work out when the base engine was actually made - production year and week - Not the date it was fitted. It may have been in storage for a long time before fitting. Best if you can post up a photo from the engine, then the more clever experts who visit here may be able to better advise.
  2. Hi John, The DIY replacement was covered here, but I can't remember how far back in this thread. I think the post referred to this post in the VW forum (https://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?8823481-DIY-TSI-Timing-Chain-) which is documented quite clearly. Which part of the country are you in? It maybe that you can find some forum help from members locally and Good Luck if you go down this route. Although, one thing to bare in mind (and if you can take the time to read through the entirety of this thread) is that the the timing chain is one part of the issue with these engines and that the rings are another big one. it would be prudent to be aware of both before a new purchase. Kind Regards, Dave
  3. You say, "no garage would entertain..." Ok. So if they're confident of their product get that agreed as part of the deal. Does anyone who has read this thread from start to finish and or any of the stuff elsewhere really believe the oil scrapper ring etc is a case of" if" and not "when"? So why has it been revised and more than once? Ditto the tensioner 4 revisions? An academic exercise, or their hand being forced. Inlet manifold? Throttle body? Yes. NO vehicle is perfect, but one needs to understand the likely issue and way up the risks. Make sure you pay a deposit with a credit card so you're covered under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1975 in case the dealer tries to duck out of his obligations under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 if the product is faulty (and bearing in mind if you specifically ask about the oil consumption he's supposed to give you an honest expert answer. Don't be fobbed off with a vague,"well mate, they all......" ). Have the oil level bench marked/agreed. Then they can check it again to do the test, or if they're not up for that and it is an issue, make sure you reject the vehicle formally within 30 days for a full refund. An honest trader should stand by their product, not offload a problem on the buyer. If it's a private sale (where you don't have any consumer rights), I personally would walk away or get a si,zeble discount.
  4. It's the manufacturing date that's important (usually on the timing chain case), not the registration date. Search back through this thread for the details. Remember this engine design is just NOT robust though. If the quick death tensioner doesn't get you (and you have a reasonable chance of escaping this). You still have the slow death of the piston oil scrapper ring design and quite possibly other or additional issues associated with the efficacy of the engine lubrication system and service interval regime that can lead to compromised oil supply to the camshafts and valve gear. How many of these engines, across the whole vag group production even, will get to high mileages without significant remedial work? I can't believe this design is anything but high risk and as shown via this thread, the manufacturer will have no interest in offering assistance. It would be prudent to at least make sure you get independent confirmation of the tensioner status and an oil consumption test before proceeding. Or get £2-3k off the price towards a new lump.
  5. Greetings! Do you have any reference material/ web links on using OBDEleven for this task? I asked their support, but they just suggested a troll through other forums, - no specific help. I haven't really had time to research it further yet. There seems to be a host of things possible with OBD, but where and how to look is the question? Doh! Sorry, just had time to review the You tube link which uses OBDEleven.- Don't worry. Kind Regards,
  6. Pinto lump serviced on the clock with no issues - old mechanic's advice - Keep changing the oil and it'll keep going. Had the hex shaft problem on the "Cologne" I think it was called 2.8 v6 lump while cruising on motorway - was that a German engine design as well? Not really relevant. No. Didn't go back to basics as thought the clever diagnostic scan etc that I paid for would have identified the fault. Guess I'll just have to roll my sleeves up and get to work. Any steers on a good not too expensive camera/scope? Thanks for the tip re reverse rotation of the engine.
  7. Thanks So, that's pretty much a given then? and solution would be a 'decoke' ? any easy way to confirm before strip down? Is it possible to view via one of these new fangled bore scopes via the TB? Then of course there's the issue of the Timing chain lottery and/or the rings so the engine is basically in need of a rebuild Doh! Crap really from this design. I got more than a quarter of a million miles from my 2.0 litre Ford (Pinto) before any major work was require on the engine.
  8. Hi, New to the Skoda Marque and sadly already disappointed with the VAG design and production but anyhow, things are what they are and it’s time to try and make the best ….if at all possible (and economically viable) 1.8 TSi 2011 circa 70K miles – so cdaa e888 lump with probably all of the faults coming my way. In particular right now a problem with the engine throttle response to gentle acceleration. Tick over appear steady and stable without throttle input. Gentle call for more revs sometimes, but not always results in a flutter and partial stall (which appears to be recovered by the ECU). A boot seems OK ironically. An indie German Specialist declared that there were no logged fault codes relating to the engine from a scan but identified a problem with the PCV. No whistling or suction from the bleed hole. Removal of the Oil filler cap did demonstrated a moderate amount of suction, very lumpy tick over and partial stalling. I checked out the PCV repair and, as it’s an easy job, I replaced it with the latest revision (genuine VAG part not Chinese) along with the rear breather hose to the inlet. This actually appears to have made the problem worse. Oil filler cap off has the same effect. I carefully dismantled the old unit fully expecting to find a torn diaphragm or the like, but all was good. Other valve seemed fine also. Not too concerned as now it has the “updated” breather for what it’s worth. I whipped the inlet boost hose off and with the aid of a light and mirror inspected the throttle body valve plate. Seems perfectly clean from the inlet side, so didn’t bother with taking the TB off at this stage. So, next steps in the hunt for the cause(s)? Not sure now if the throttle response problem is linked or whether I have two issues to deal with? What are your learned thoughts / experiences with these symptoms and this engine? What next for diagnosis/likely faulty component(s)? Thanks in advance for your help guys.
  9. Greetings! Thanks in advance for any info on this. How exactly should I 'decode' the info shown on the Bar Code Label on the top outside of the timing chain cover. (1.8 tsi) The code shows as Lots of German: *CDA XXXXXX* - 20.01.11 03:11 8907 26 M I presume the CDA - Engine type and No. is the engine number (hence Xs) but what about the rest? Production date? 20.01.11? and the rest I'm clueless. Kind Regards,
  10. Greetings! Just read through this interesting and somewhat horrifying post. I picked up a 1.8 2011 Superb a couple of weeks back, 64K miles. It has the CDAA Engine in it. Seems ok except for a hesitation to throttle response from tick over upwards if gently depressed where the revs drop and then then the EMU recovers it before a stalls (usually). Dealer has offered a warranty and I've just has the car assessed by an Indie who says (and has shown me) a problem with the PCV and this is due to be replaced. I've only done roughly 800 mile and oil consumption, at present, doesn't seem a problem although fuel consumption seems lousy (haven't calculated it yet). A couple of questions from a newbie: How do I find out more tech detail on the engine? e.g. Production MY month etc? Which timing chain tensioner etc? Is there any known connection between PCV failure and the more serious\catastrophic failures of Rings and Timing Chains? Any ideas on the prevalence of this sort of problem and are these models\engines just "Ticking Time Bombs"? There may be an option to reject the vehicle although probably difficult. Thanks in advance
  11. Greetings! The Opening link doesn't seem to work anymore. Throws a 404 page not found. Does any knowledgeable wiz have a new link? TIA
