  1. My one was under warranty from a Skoda dealership. They initially said it was the turbo and changed it. After going through a litre in 150 miles they then agreed to replace the pistons to the redesigned ones which required new conrods. Lucky for me they also wanted to change all the timing chains. They left the water pump. Dealership figures were approximately £1200 for the turbo and £5000 for the other engine parts and labour.
  2. 1.8tsi what’s the oil consumption like? I had pistons conrods replaced and all chains and tensioners.
  3. Will definitely need new pistons and rings if your going to keep it. The extra oil deposits on the valves will cause them to burn eventually and you will lose compression. Then you will need to replace the valves and pistons. on a positive note I haven’t needed to top up oil between services since having the redesigned pistons.
  4. How bad is really bad? How much are you topping up? Before the fix mine was using one litre of oil in 200-300 miles.
  5. Scraper ring problem was fixed in 2011 so a 2012 tsi should be ok
  6. My 2011 1.8 tsi needed new con rods and redesigned pistons when they identified high oil consumption.
  7. It’s going to need a bottom end rebuild so it will be best to change the chains and tensioners if nothing else. Probably best to have the turbo checked for damage too
  8. The redesigned scrapper rings were introduced 2011-2012 so depends on your build date. The Cam chains breaking are a separate issues but all bundled into this engine failure thread.
  9. Scraper oil rings will be the culprit the new design pistons also require new con rods as the gudgeon pin is a different size. There are aftermarket pistons that will use the old con rods but still an expensive job.
  10. Lucky for me mine was fixed by the Skoda dealership under warranty. New turbo and bottom end rebuild they estimated it was the best part of 6k to do all the work. No idea on the cost of a recon engine but would think less than 5k
  11. Piston design changed in 2012 I think, not sure on the tensioners
  12. Mine was definitely a bad one, new turbo, con rods, pistons and timing chains an tensioners sorted it. Do you know the build date of the replacement engine?
  13. Welcome to the group I’m in Romsey too, got a 2011 1.8 TSI Octavia elegance. some of the info is very technical but you’ll soon get you head around it.
  14. Approved used from main Skoda dealer August 2018. Got it sorted within the 3 month warranty.
