  1. Yes, there are "Nordic winter tyres" and regular winter tyres. I usually do like you, go for the test winner which right now seems to be Continental Viking Contact 7. But yesterday I ordered Goodyear UltraGrip Ice 2, which was the test winner last year. The Conti tyre is brand new and a bit more expensive, and seems a bit more noisy.
  2. Thanks a lot! I'm in central Gothenburg so I'm actually not considering studs at all. I'm looking to buy probably the Goodyear UltraGrip Ice 2 or the Pirelli Winter Ice Zero FR, since these tyres seem to perform the best in tests I've read, together with the Continental Viking Contact 7 but that's a little bit more expensive, and the performance seems similar to those I mentioned.
  3. Very informative, thanks! He also confirms my suspicion that the perfect all-weather tyre doesn't exist. I don't want to be in a crash with my kids thinking "maybe a proper winter tyre could have saved us from crashing". I think I will keep changing twice a year 😁
  4. Interesting. The idea of not having to change wheels twice a year is very appealing. However some compromises must be made with those tyres I imagine. I don't worry about summer grip, what I do want is best possible grip in snowy bad conditions.
  5. Studded tyres are legal everywhere in Sweden (within some time of the year) except for some streets in the center of the biggest towns. But like I said, in Gothenburg where I live they love salt on the road, so a lot of times you will have snow on smaller roads which they don´t put salt on and asphalt on the bigger roads. And metal to asphalt is not beneficial for anyone. But regarding all weather tyres, my understanding is that the rubber is way softer in the winter tyres, so it stays softer at cold temperatures than summer tyres, and that´s the big difference between the tyres (along with deeper pattern on the winter tyres). And that softer rubber would wear out quickly in the summer.
  6. I know it's not comparable but don't rally cars typically use narrow tyres, to dig into the snow/mud/whatever?
  7. Yes they are, however in the southern parts of Sweden most of the winter is not that much snow, and I live in a city (Gothenburg) where they like salt a lot so most of the times the roads are "slushy". Spikes are more common in the norhern parts of Sweden, and maybe more on the countryside. Also, the environmental part of it, they tear up the road, and they are noisier.
  8. This is the information I couldn't find while Googling. If it says 6.5 (what unit?) on the rim, how do I know how wide tires I can have on it? However now that I know they're 205 and not 255 😁 I think I'll stick to 205.
  9. Thanks, but I'm in Sweden where we occasionally get a lot of snow in winter, so I'd rather have proper winter tyres 😊
  10. Thanks. You're right, they're 205 which is probably fine. Summer tyres are 225 and winter 205.
  11. I'm so sorry guys - they're 205 😁 had to go to the garage to check. I noted it down quickly some time ago, guess I wrote to 5's instead of a 0 and a 5. As you can tell, I'm not that familiar with tyre sizes 😁 The reason I asked initially was because I couldn't find ANY tyres that size. No wonder 😁 Can't find any way to edit my post... does anyone know?
  12. True. Actually the fuel tank is the same size as on other Octavias (I think), they've just reduced the size of the trunk to fit the CNG tank. Still a decent size trunk.
  13. Are you saying I can fit 205 tyres on the rims?
  14. I know it's probably super narrow for petrolheads 😁 but I'm a dad of 2 and drive carefully, I have no need for wide tyres. Narrower tyres perform better in snow and that is more important to me + lower fuel consumption + less noise. But what you're saying is that 255 is narrow enough?
  15. Honestly I don't know if it starts on petrol or not. Rumor says it does, but if it does it consumes VERY little petrol each start. Thanks for the advice! What makes us a bit tricky is that I cannot choose what it should run on, if there's CNG then it runs on CNG, if not it runs on petrol. There is no way to manually select petrol.
  16. Sorry this is probably a newbie question but I've googled and can't find an answer... I'm planning on buying new winter tyres. Current ones are 255/55 R16 and that seems unnecessary wide. Narrower tires are better in snow, lowers fuel consumption and gives a quieter ride (correct me if I'm wrong). So I'm looking to buy narrower ones, if that's possible to fit on the rims?
  17. Hi everyone! Have an Octavia G-TEC -15. Very happy with it. I'm only running it on CNG. On a few occasions I've run out of CNG and had to run on petrol a few km before filling up, but very few. I bought it 1,5 years ago with a full petrol tank, and I still have about 3/4 of the petrol left. Driven about 20 000 km. Someone over at reddit recommended me to run it on petrol every once in a while, since the petrol degrades over time, and that 1,5 year old petrol definitely is not good for the car. So I filled it up and am currently running it on petrol. Can anyone confirm that you would run it on petrol once in a while? If so, how often?
  18. I'm the same, and I'd also rather ask people that can explain stuff to me in a way that I understand, instead of reading a poorly translated manual
  19. ...and he/she was actually right, the explanation of the auto rear wiper function was in the manual
  20. Well I'll be damned - removing the map files from the SD card worked!! Apparently, if you have the map files on the SD card, the system assumes you want to update the maps and mounts the SD card for the navi system, making the SD card unusable for the rest of the system. It would be helpful if Skoda mentioned this somewhere.... To conclude: you CANNOT update the maps and the radio station logos at the same time with the same SD card.
  21. When I insert the SD card, the system says something in the line of "software update"... Hmm maybe I should remove the other files on the SD card, the files to update the maps... Thanks for the tip!
  22. Yes. Point 4 is where my problem is, I cannot select any medium, neither my SD card nor any other medium. Nothing happens when I press it.
  23. Ehhmm... yes, I actually found it in the manual after I posted, sorry.... but thanks for your kind reply! I have the opposite problem with it - I think it wipes too seldom... here in Sweden it often rains just a little bit so the wipers are in rain sensor position and wiping intermittently.... What about the radio station logos issue, do you have any idea why the car won´t recognize my SD card, even though I managed to update the maps from it?
  24. Hi all, new to this forum, first post I recently bought a Skoda Octavia -15 and I am very happy about it. But there are some settings which are very confusing to me. The most confusing one is about the rear wiper. There is a setting called "auto rear wiper". But what does it do? I´ve noticed it wipes SOMETIMES when the front wipers are on, but very seldom. Does anyone know how it´s supposed to work? I´m also struggling to import radio station logos to the system. I have logos stored on an SD card, but when I go to the settings for the radio I cannot select the SD card. It is however detected, since I managed to import new maps from it. There are some other confusing things as well but I´ll leave those for later thanks!
