I wonder whether somebody could give me some advice,
I have a 2008 Octavia 1.9tdi, and have just changed the timing belt / water pump etc. The engine was running fine before I did the work. I used a timing lock kit, but as a precaution, made some marks with tippex on the belt and sprockets. Everything seemed fine, and nothing seemed tight when I turned the engine over by hand a few times (socket on crankshaft bolt).
I didn't take the fuel filter off, but merely undid some of the smaller pipes, and folded it out of the way onto the top of the bulkhead and it was on it's side.
When I started the engine, it ran fine with no load, and I ran it up to temperature at various engine revs and it was running sweetly. However, as I drove it up the road, it immediately started missing, and then surging under load. It was lumpy. I ran it for a couple of miles not exceeding 30mph. I was fairly confident that the timing setting was correct. Could the problem be that I have disturbed dirt in the fuel filter, and that would cause similar problems?
Would there be similar problems if I had got the timing out somehow?
I would be grateful for the advice.
Many thanks,
