georgef's post in GAP Insurance was marked as the answerMy provider - Gapinsurance.co.uk - deferred the start date for 12 months (actually 364 days because the policy had to be started within 12 months of me taking delivery of the car). There was absolutley no problem. So, I have a 3 year policy which covers years 2 to 4 because my car insurance will provide a new replacement in the event of a write-off in year 1.
I would ask each company you seek a quote from about derring the start date, but certainly it is do-able. I would also ask about a 30 month policy with the start date deferred to the 1st anniversary of you taking delivery - might be possible to have a bespoke term and if so, no point in paying for a 6 month period of cover you do not need.

georgef's post in Aircon problem was marked as the answerRight. Part ordered on Sunday - in the end I paid £8.99 inc p&p and a 2 year warranty. I imagine the warranty is worth the paper it is written on. Anyway we'll see.
Part ordered Sunday arrived Tuesday lunchtime. Very good.
Took all of 45 mins to fit tonight but what a performance. Getting the old one out was easy enough once I located it. I didn't take the pictures down to the car and couldn't see the resistor. Having retrieved the instructions, everything made sense and locating the part was easty. Whoever said there isn't much room wasn't kidding. Putting the new one back in was a right carry on. The thing fitted into the hole ok but getting it to turn thro 45 degrees was really difficult. Anyway, I got that done and now I have functioning air con. Even if the new resistor fails fairly quickly, I now know what the issue is and would consider perhaps getting a genuine part. I would rather have wasted £9 than the £39 that a Skoda part cost if it turned out the resistor was not faulty.
I found tucking the heater hose up out of the way created a little more room. In truth, it took almost as long to get the glovebox back in as it did to change the resistor.
So, a huge thanks to all on the forum who responded and to those who took the trouble to prepare the instructions and post them. As ever, I am indebted to you.
